Been done lots of times and then it destroys the originality of the No 5.  Your call of course, you own it.
But, they are very capable trailers even with out a tailgate and you can use it as a boat to go fishing.

Or, you can get some buddies with paddles and do a re-enactment of the Assault over the River Elbe.

I seem to recollect some were done in service.
There are some photo's up somewhere. If not on this forum, have a look at the REMLR archives on the AULRO forum.

I wouldn't cut a tailgate into a No. 5 either - but I have a photo of how it should be done. There's some serious work done to this one.

The bits on the corners support a boat rack, but as Greg pointed out the No. 5 is a river-worthy vessel on its own  ;)

Wasn't that one of the RAAF No5's that were made of aluminum?

Could be Mick, I've no idea. That's the first I've heard of Les' later trailer being a standard variant, but it makes perfect sense that it would be.

Here's a picture I have on file of one that's been done, it looks a very neat job. Again as others have said though, it will lose it's originality.

Hi,

Yes there where N05's modified with tail gates and also with support legs, hydraulic brakes with hand break and shockers, these where generally specialty one offs eg generator trailers - I nearly bought one and know who has one for sale.

The Aluminium RAAF No5's where almost identical to the army ones but had spare tyre on front and one or two minor differences eg tail lights and pig tails varied.

Check out this one

They were slightly smaller. The story I heard was they were made because the No5's fouled when being loaded on a Caribou.

Not a No5. It's built on a 1 ton cargo chassis. It's also missing a few leaves in the springs so must have been designed for a lighter load.

I can say from personal experience that a standard No.5 fits in a Caribou.
