G'day all and request info on Austin Champs
« on: March 02, 2014, 07:57:12 PM »
 G'day All

I'm Alan Snashall in the ACT and, while I acknowledge that Landys have a prominent and respected place in Australian military history, my interest is in the 400 Austin Champs that were in the Army from 1955 to 1966  :)

I'm compiling a database of ARNs on Champs and will make that information available to help fill out the REMLR records in the ARN 104 series.  Champs had ARNs in the range 104350 to 104750.

I'd appreciate any help members might be able to give on the subject of Champs.

Cheers, Alan

Hi Alan, welcome to the forum. It would be good to chat on the phone about ARNs. Sorry I don't know much regards the Champs' history, yet.

There's still a lot of Champs around WA but they were brought into the country by Archie Marshall and came from the BAOR. I've had 5 over the years  but went back to LR's as they are more reliable

I got some photos that will be of interested, one factory fresh champ, and others are plans of them.  I hope to have a champ page with them up some time this week that can be expanded on in time.

Thanks for the emails the other day, I look forward to working together.

I have a photostat copy of EMER  D574 (part 2) Technical handbook --- Base repairs
Truck, 1/4 ton, CT, 4x4, Austin Mk1
issue 1,  28 Dec 56
I can make this available for further copying if required.

(I believe Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Regulations (EMER's) predate current type EMEI's)

Hi Cookey,

EMER is the British Army Term (R = Regulation).

The Australian term was originally EMEI(Aust), later changed to simply EMEI. (I = Instruction).

Alan: I assume you are in touch with the Austin Champ Register?

Regards

Mike C

I believe Alan is yes, although I found a couple of websites and registers when I looked yesterday.  I am doing a page with info and photos (and plans) but was going to link there for the full history rather than regurgitating somebody else's information.   Hoping to put a little on their Australian service, but I think that is more what Alan is looking into as well.

Think I published an article on Aust Champs.

Last year sometime, in 'Army Motors'.

I'll have to see if I can find a copy so that I have something to reference!

I have what I believe is a Champ rear diff assy, mounted in a wooden frame covered in wax paper stuff, these items are an Achilles heel
on champs, I will take it to Corowa for the swap meet.

Richard,

Email me, I'll give you the editors email and you can speak to him about reproducing it on the REMLR site. (Our email address book just got wiped by some 'corrections/updates' at the service provider... thanks Guys!)
