universal joints
« on: December 22, 2013, 07:17:50 PM »
Has anybody had to replace uni joints on the tailshaft of there 4x4 Perentie. I have been quoted almost $60 per universal joint and they don't have any in stock in WA. (that is using a Landrover part number)   I am sure that universal joints in most cases are just a common item regardless of the vehicle brand. Pretty sure that it is a 1310 series driveline on the perentie. Iam going to a bearing retailer tomorrow measure up my old uni hoping they can match it.However just thought I would enquire in case somebody had a generic part number. Have a happy xmas and brilliant new year. JohnO

You might want to stick with the OEM uni joint. Several incidents have highlighted the fact that cheaper or aftermarket UJ's or p/shafts fail badly under offroad conditions.

Dana Spicer P/N is 5/153X. Same uni joint is also used on Jeep Wrangler, if you have one of those dealers close by.

Land Rover universals have a side thrust pad, no other brand has this feature and as a result they will fail under heavy/hard working conditions. Also all LR prop shafts have forged steel flanges, aftermarket (cheaper) flanges are cast iron and again will fail much sooner. Land Rover sliding joints are forged and are coated on the spline to reduce wear, whereas the aftermarket are not.

And a propshaft breaking whilst in use has the potential to throw the vehicle over, and this most certainly has happened, and it is not pretty!

Some people take the rist and go the cheaper aftermarket ones, but Defence have discovered all of the above the hard way and now dictate OE only I am told.

Thanks Gunner & Pheonix, good info.I have just purchased 2 uni joints from statewide bearings, made inUSA Federal Mogul part number 3200-A. They are identical to the U joints I removed. These American driveline people make good stuff, Clarence Spicer made the fist U joints for the auto industry. I am very aware of the problems that can happen with cheap unbranded parts , but names like Spicer, Federal Mogul, Timken and so on are very good. Landrover don't make U joints they get them from driveline manufactures. The ones I purchased are branded Precision U joint OE assured. Thanks for your help gents

$30.40 for 2, I have every confidence they are as good as the ones that came out. Federal Mogul are not mugs they supply  equipment to NASA, have been producing bearings ,U joints etc for over 120 years. Just a hint I found the easy way to grease the front drive shaft is to remove the floor. I am going to modify the floor to make it a bit easier to replace. Charlie , you make up your own mind, my opinion may not be right .  JohnO

I had mine replaced with OEM uni's before roadworthy. Think it was about $240 all up.
Besides new wipers it was the only thing they picked up pre registration.

And note too that in that diagram the uni joint flanges are correctly out of phase. See THIS THREAD on how to re-assemble the shafts.
