Tyre questions
« on: December 20, 2013, 08:50:00 PM »
Hi all,
If I fit slightly wider tyres to the 110 will it have any effect/ strain on the drivetrain etc.
Also what is the side wall aspect ratio of steel treks or xzl's?
The tyres I have that I want to fit are 265/75R16. 75 being the sidewall aspect ratio.

It's not precise, but the nominal aspect ratio for the old style tyre sizes is 100%, ie 7.5 inches wide and 7.5 inches tall.

As I said, not precise, because a 7.50-16 is closer to 32" in dia and would be close match to the dia of a 265/75-16.

Shouldn't cause any strain on the drivetrain, and even less difference on the speedo, but realise that 265's won't fit on the 6" wide Perentie rim, you will need new wheels, and they may scrub at certain steering lock positions and/or suspension articulation with the standard suspension. You will also need to add flares.

You say you already have the 265's, so it won't be helpful to suggest that 235/85-16s might have been a better choice, as they will be a direct swap for the 7.50-16s!

Thanks very much for the advice gunner,
You have raised some very good points there. I was talking to the man at bob Jane and he said they would be able to 'squeeze' the tyres onto the narrower rims and that they shouldn't rub on anything they shouldn't. But I spose we won't know till they're on there, hopefully every thing will be good.

Where did this imaginary 6" rim come from? They are 5.5" wide! Same as lwb Series, civvy 110 and Defender steelies (excluding 130 rims@6.5")

A wider tyre will put more strain on your arms to steer it.

Edit: Split rims may or may not be 5.5", that one I don't know...

Ah geez now i'm going to have to measure the ex army 110 rim I have again. I was sure it matched the rest of my 110 rims.

Glad to stand corrected though.

Tyres were fitted this morning :) no dramas so far, I don't think they're any harder to steer either. I reckon they make it ride a bit better too.

The IPV had regular 5.5" (at least that's what Engineering Development No2  had) the 6" came later.

Where did this imaginary 6" rim come from? They are 5.5" wide!
Not sure how you could think they are anything BUT 6"!

Oh I'm sorry, not all of us have 7+ rims & data plates on a vehicle in the front yard to prove our worth, if practically every long wheel base Land Rover or Defender had 6" rims i'd expect the army to have done the same, but 5.5" rims are by far the most common across the 109/110 range.

At least from this discourse any Perentie owner seeking an extra rim will know they have to get something obscure or replace the lot with something common.

I wonder if it was a compromise?

The 130 Defenders use a 6.5" rim while almost every other 110/Defender use the 5.5".  The Army may have decided that to save the logistical nightmare of having two rim sizes, one for the 110 and one for the 6x6, they would standardise on a common 6" rim.

You will also notice that the Haulmark PT1 1.2 trailers have a generic ROH 6" rim in the Land Rover PCD.  I don't know if the Cooks are the same or if the replacement rims on the No.5s exiting AFM have all been retrofitted with 6".  But they do seem to all have the later style rims on them.

Absolutely, that was the reason for pointing out that it is a 6" rim (in 99.999% of applications), so that someone seeking a spare doesn't get suckered in by that e-bay listing for 5.5" Perentie rims.

Even the No5 trailers have been updated with the 6" AYG8018 rims to standardise them with the LR fleet.

All series 2/2a both LWB and SWB were fitted with 5.5 inch wide rims Rover Part Number 272309 which superceeded to the series 3 rim type with PCD ridge and was an AYG part number.

cheers

SIII was AYG8308.
Looks identical to 110 AYG8108 just different offset.
