Defender 130 in ADF Service

There appears to be little information on the Defender 130 as used by the Australian army. How many were use by the army and does REMLR have an ARN list for them?

The photo below was taken in East Timor 1999. It is the only photo I have seen showing an entire vehicle whilst in service. It appears to have a civilian bull bar, no convoy lights, TAC plate holders or other military bits on the vehicle.





This ex ADF 130 was up for sale on the internet recently. The camouflage pattern does not match up to the 130 in photo #1 so it is not one and the same.

There was some discussion on them when the one in your photo's was up for sale.
General concensus was it was a salyman's truck. (Did I spell that right?)

In East Timor, the Red Shield Defence Services (RSDS) & Everymans reps had a civvie 4x4 with a purpose built rear body in an ikkie green colour. See the P04378.XX series of images (eg P04378.08) on the AWM website. The reps and their vehicles were not allowed to look like ADF, and dressed in Yakka type khaki drill. The vehicles were all privately registered in Qld.

Only one of the four was returned to Australia, the others were gifted 'in country'. The returned example was presented to the Australian War Memorial by RSDS. The Qld plates were retained with the permission of the Qld government.

51FNQR had a White fleet 130 around '94-'95. Sorry, no more details than that, other than to say I was quite impressed with its torque over the Perenties.

I ran a post a few years ago on this subject, I even found the Tender that DOD submitted to LRA, I think the list price was 85k per unit, they had other things on them as well.

Ok, running from memory, there are a number of 130's in use by the ADF.  Navy Clearance divers certrainly had some, or at least the unit in hobart had one withg a sad looking rusty chassis.

The sallyman 130's were all single cab units, the camouflage 130 dual cab hicaps were all (x4 if I recall) defence PR vehicles.   Great photos of them stuart. 

I thought I had put some info about htem onto the website, but they must still be in the to do category.

Unfortunately at the time of that discussion no one could come up with a photo of a camouflaged 130 whilst in ADF service. Speculation therefore prevailed as to it's origin and use. This 'new' photo got me thinking that there were 130s used by the ADF in some capacity and the camouflaged vehicle and rear tub canopy did not suggest that it was a Sallyman Land Rover. A quick search came up with this photo of the 'Everyman' vehicle you (and Mike) are referring to.

This 130 is ex ADF 'white fleet'. It was purchased at a Defence disposal auction in QLD a number of years ago and driven to WA. The owner has subsequently slapped a coat of OD over it. It was this OD that drew my attention to the vehicle. The owner mentioned that it was some kind of servicing vehicle. I was wondering whether the pioneer tool holders and rubber bonnet clamps were ADF mods?

Some ADF registrations would be nice. The young local got in the way of that in the image!

The Everymans and RSDS operated the same vehicles (4 of) but they were purchased and owned by RSDS.

As to the REML site being blank re the 130s: tut tut Richard (tongue in check ... red flag flying...)! Anyone would think you had a million things to do on the site, and now the AAVA site as well (so I hear...). Seriously, don't know how you find the time to achieve as much as you do.

Stuart, the one that you pictured looks like the clearance diver's vehicle that I saw in tassie, but as you said, repainted green.  Will try and find the pic from my old cadets photos when I was instructing on promo course (pre 9/11 attacks, security etc)

I have some photos of the 130 sallyman and camo 130 Dual Cab Hicap to put up later today. 

In addition I have been told that there were also a significant number of 130 Crew Cab done for the Seychelles Police/Security. Some were Drab and some were DPP similar to ADF which is quite interesting.

Stuart, thanks photos.
I drove the vehicle a handful of time as a GD on a patrolmans Cse, so wasn't overly familiar with it.
My recollections are;
Turbo torque was a sweet change to the breathless 4BD1
No bonnet tools or wheel
Canvas canopy
I recall having to stop numerous times to pull the tub bracing strips out as they came free and stuck out the side of the vehicle!
