« on: June 01, 2013, 11:35:16 AM »
First day of winter...
I dug out some Hard top pics from 98.
Hard tops are warmer.. true or false?

Hardtops aint necessarily warmer. Just slightly less draughty.
That soft top looks like it's on a lightweight. AJ's?

Well there is always my vintage army great coat I suppose...

One more advantage - easier to install/anchor the over-the-shoulder safety belt.

Hey Carzee, that's my 178 193 there with its old hard top on.

Thanks for the photos, takes me back a bit!

Back in 98, it was my daily drive, (about 300km per week) and I put the hard top on for improved security when in the car park at work, and around town.

I got it from someone on a station outside of Kalgoorlie when I was based there, and it came up fairly well with some olive drab over the original sandglow. It did have a dodgy sunroof in it though, which did not fit in very well. Beggars cant be choosers, it was free. :D

I also put in the Smiths heater, to try and stop the windscreen fogging up, which it did really well in a small arc at the base of the windscreen just above the vents, but left the remaining 90% misted up.

It was still cold and a bit draughty though, and I always thought that the canvas soft top was more waterproof than the hard top. The condensation on a cold morning was not fun either.

Hot in summer as well, although I did like taking the door tops off for somewhere to put my right arm while driving.

These days, 178 193 is back to GS spec, and I've pulled out all of the non standard instruments etc, as well putting the soft top back on.

The hard top is stored in pieces in the shed, and the only non standard bits left on the 2A are the civi rear x member that I replaced the rusty original with, and the hydraulic winch that came from a wrecker, that is still useful every now and then around the place.

Nice to see the old girl in a past life,

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi Mike, thats a great story.
I must have met you at the Cooma 50th in 98. It was a busy weekend to say the least.
So glad you hadn't seen these for a few years. And very glad you have that 'the old girl' still.

Do you parade her? Sounds like she is in good condition. We do have a roll call on the go.

And you got a Series 3 sandglow HT for nix in Kalgoorlie and painted it drab. :) It certainly looked pretty good.

As for the heaters, hmmm... you would think the english would need a good heater...

Yes Ross, I remember you and Castrol in 98 at Cooma. It was a terrific event, and that's how I ended up with REMLR number 20.

Good to see you back with a new vehicle.

It's a shame that I couldn't make it to the 60th but i'll definitely have a shot at the 70th.

178 193 is in parade condition, and we have both offered our services every year for the Anzac Day march in Melbourne for the past 13 years. I did take it up to Corowa one year, but work often gets in the way with a fairly changeable shift work roster.

I've had the 2A since I bought it at auction in Perth in 1993, so it's a genuine 2 owner vehicle!

As for those Smiths heaters, I can see why the poms called them 'fug stirrers' ......

Cheers,

Mike.
