24v generator
« on: November 17, 2013, 09:12:46 PM »
Is there a simple way to remove the 24v generator from a Perentie ?  Mine is not working and I intended removing it but looks like you either need to remove the starter motor and slide backwards or the alternator and do some of yoga sequence to get it out !!

We did it on a 110 at the SME museum about 3 years ago.  If you look at the CAV alternator, you can see it is held on with 2 X 30mm metal bands, these can come off the alternator while its stil insitu and make the job a little less impossible.

It is probably also easier if you remove the 12V alternator so you can get at the 28V one, disconnecting the 12V battery first.

If it has the 24V batteries fitted, first remove the negative lead in the drivers side battery box, then negative lead in the passengers side box and then the postive lead in the passengers side box.

Then undo the multipin cable from the Alternator, by unscrewing the collar.

Release the V belt off the alternator.

Now it starts getting hard, the bands on the alternator are clamped onto it by 4 IIRC 8mm bolts, 2 on each band, loosten off the bolts and preferably remove them.

It may be easier to support the alternator with a ratchet strap or 2, between the bands  The bands are held onto the engine by 2 long IIRC 12mm bolts, undo the nuts, withdraw the bolt so that you can rotate the other band and slide it off, and then slide the other band off the other end.

Then you can manipulate the alternator out.

Its a pig of a job that took about 4 hours.

Hot on the driveway today, hard days work.
Getting ready for a Corowa trip meant flushing the 12yo radiator and putting on fresh hoses...

...and while the front was so 'airy' I did the 24v alt-ectomy. I had already cut the belt long ago. Taking it out proved a bit easier than the method thru the top. Coming out front wards meant the clasp ring bolts were loosened, the engine mount long bolts removed, and then both rings removed by sliding off the front end. That meant going towards the firewall in a steep upward angle and to accomplish the angle the engine breather pot had to be unbolted (easy). The 12v alternator and belt were not touched.

If it hadn't been mentioned already, that 24v unit weighs about the same as a truck battery.

I did this a couple weeks back too out through the top. Removed the alternator, removed the tension pully to get the generator belts off, undid the mounting bolts while having it held up with a strap so as to not crush my hand :D Then rotated it out through the top. Probably took about an hour all up after putting the alternator back.
