New/Old canopy
« on: August 23, 2012, 11:53:11 AM »
As mentioned in my re-intro, here are a couple of photos of the canopy I bought recently. It looks to have been recoloured, rather badly, to darken it. Perhaps to assist with camouflaging it (?). Anyway, it's in remarkably good condition, with all buckles and straps present, and no major holes or repairs. I was happily surprised that it fitted over the ROP bars, as my old canopy had to be modified. Loving the side windows, dramatically aids visibility.

Hi Stephen
Thanks. It's been on the road since about 2005. Shame about not being able to keep the old plates. I'm presuming you weren't aware of this little bit of legislation

Re-issuing black and silver ordinary plates

"In certain circumstances the NZTA will allow the re-issue of a vehicle's older style black and silver plates. The following conditions apply. The number on the plates must be still available. Sometimes people use a number from the old black plates and put it on a personalised plate – in such cases the old plates cannot be re-used as the number has been 'taken'.The plates must be in good condition. The plates must be the last plates that were issued to the vehicle when the registration was cancelled and the owner may be required to show evidence of this. The best evidence is the certificate of registration or other paperwork (insurance policy, repair receipts showing the registration number, etc). This rule only applies to those who are re-registering their vehicle. For example, if a vehicle is currently registered with plates but previously had black and silver plates, these cannot be re-issued. Any person who is re-registering their vehicle and wishes to have their black and silver plates re-issued can write to the NZTA at:Transport Registry CentreAttention: Team Leader Business AdministrationPrivate Bag 11777Palmerston North 4442If approved, the NZTA will send a letter which includes a reference number that must be provided to the agent processing your registration application when re-registering the vehicle. This number confirms that the plates may remain affixed to the vehicle and that new plates are not required."

The only way to put your old "FV" plate on is to buy it as a personalised plate, and fit the old plates back onto the vehicle, expensive way to do it, but it's what I would do (if I could afford it), considering how important the FV prefix is to a Skippy.

Hi Mike,
I looked into the number plate issue as well with my Skippy and found the only way out was personalised! my plates were absolutely munted especially the front one, luckily the new one were acquired before the price hike. 7 coats of black and a very gentle rub down on the raised lettering proved a perfect job, I think they stand out better than the white plates! What a find getting that canvas, I know what its like trying to drive with limited vis :( your Skippy looks good!
cheers, Carl.

Hi Carl
Sorry I just saw your post, haven't been on here for a while. Plates are looking great. The black and white ones just look awful on restorations. Really like the new canopy, especially the extra visibility. Liking your truck too. How's your trailer coming along?

Good to hear from you! I see a canvas on Tme looks ex Mil? Funny, just talking a bout trailer when I saw your post.. trailers at a guy in Ettrick who restores vehicles and does general engineering, (he's a part of our LR group and has just recently rebuilt his 1965 LR swb, nice job) Ive striped it (trailer) down, had the springs checked and sorted by Cope and Brown Dn, pintle ring has been straightened and thats about it at this stage. I want it ready for Warbirds next year. Have you got another Skippy? Catch up soon, cheers, Carl.

Did you manage to find the coupling plate that the trailers safety chain threads through? Nope, still have the one Skippy. I did have another one a few years ago, but that one was broken up for spares.

Just looked at the canopy on Trade me. It is an ex Skippy one. It's had the window flaps replaced with plastic windows.
