3 Brigade ORF camo scheme
« on: June 03, 2012, 06:00:38 PM »
A while back I started a thread on the aulro remlr section regarding this sheme:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/remlr-general/140588-3-brigade-orf-1980s-camo-advice.html

There was some discussion but I thought I'd raise it again here.
I'm looking for people's opinion or solid knowledge of what the actual colours are.  Obviously, Australian OD and a dark brown and stone/pink sort of colour.

G'day Folks :)

I have a late 2a bonnet (round sparetyre pads) which is drab-pink-black, which I am going to strip back shortly so I can replace my current bonnet, which has a cracks and slight kink  in it, looks like it flipped open while in service, caused by worn over centre clamps

cheers

I have had some correspondence:

Quote
UNCLASSIFIED

Matthew, I am WO2 Rocky Hema, ther curator for B SQN and I was involved
with the application of the Desert type Camo to our vehicles in 1981
-82.  The brown and pink paint by memory, was supplied as a Defence
procured paint and cannot remember the supplier.  We did the paint job
around 1982 after the first paint scheme Green/Olive Drab/Sand/Black was
rejected.  I'll check my photos and confirm shade of colour.  When the
colours were applied, the vehicles were fairly bright, but after a few
exercises, it blended in well to our country environment.  I'll get back
to you early next year

Cheers Rocky

This was the first response.

Yesterday I got this:
Quote
UNCLASSIFIED

Hi Matt.  At the time when we sprayed our vehicles with these colours,
all I could remember was the paint shipped to us in unmarked cardboard
boxes.  When we applied the pink and brown, it came out shiny.  After a
few bush trips, the paint blended in well, and I would assume that the
pink and brown were commercial off the shelf products.  I cannot recall
if the pink and brown were a Wattyl product, nor could I find any
receipts during that time.  I suggest that you may have to colour match
where possible.  I'll dig thru my photos and try and get a clean pick of
a vehicle that had been done

Cheers Rocky

G'day Korg

This ambo has the same colour scheme. The GS on the right in this photo also has the same scheme. The ambo is from 11th Field Ambulance.

If you contact the 11th Field Ambulance Association you may be able to source some more info.

Juddy,

Pretty sure they used the same paint to paint the canvas, it is very harsh on the canvas and dramatically reduced the life of the canvas, so what ever you do don't do this at home!

Scott

I don't know if it is relevant, however there is a British Standard Colour dark brown "Dark Earth" that was first used by British Commonwealth forces during WWII in the "temperate Colour scheme" on the upper surfaces of aircraft and was also the main colour used for the South African Defence Force during the 1970's.

Its code is BSC 381C "350 Dark Earth".

Another couple of colours that may be of interest are the BSC 381C colours "499 Service Brown" and "412 Dark Brown"

See: http://www.nspcoatings.co.uk/bs381c-colour-charts.php

I don't know what access there is the the dye colours for the AusCam canvas, however when the geometric AusCam canvas is new it is a four colour scheme with a dark brown that looks very similar to the colour you are seeking.  Unfortunately this colour fades very quickly and you end up with a three colour cam scheme.
Thanks Diana,
That's helpful information.  I have used the Dark Earth colour plenty of times when painting scale models but I hadn't put the two together.

G'day korg20000bc  :)

I think that you maybe able to find the paint is a Wattyl product, and if the Lustreless Olive Drab is still in their "Structral" enamel lists, then the other colours could also be there, as to the differences in colour on both D165 and D111 it would seem that D165 is a new spray and D111 a weathered paint job,the colours could be "Dark Earth" and "Portland Stone" or "Light Desert Pink"  ;)

cheers
