Rotating Pintle Hook vs Fixed Pintle Hook.
« on: September 28, 2013, 05:38:15 PM »
Now I know all the current Army gear being sold currently has the pintle hooks unlocked and rotating.
I also understand why this is done - to prevent both vehicle and trailer rolling if things get a bit messy.
If rotating pintles are such a safety item, could someone please explain to me why it is almost impossible to buy a rotating hook, and everything I can find is fixed and bolted to the chassis or Hayman Reece receiver?????????
I currently have a workshop trailer with a rotating ring (never got the army mod to stop it rotating), but I'm towing it with a fixed, non rotating pintle hook.
Anyone have any ideas on why this is so??

They used to be fixed pintles. The hitch on the back of a No5 and 1 ton cargo trailer are fixed.
Even as late as '96 the lunettes were supplied rotating. The lunettes on my 1 ton cargo and one of my Tracks rotate. The other Track has had a plate installed to restrict its rotating.
Awaiting the discussion with bated breath.

My understanding is that only one of the two (pintle OR lunette) should rotate.

My Ser 3 had a lockable pintle which could either be fixed or rotating.

The pintles on current lot of 110s can't be locked in the fixed position.

Is this because having both rotating is, in effect, as bad a practice as having both fixed ?

I too look forward to reading the rest of the input.

Having the pintle locked is good as you don't break your ankle when you climb in the back using it as a step and have it rotate under you ;D

That is one positive vote for a fixed pintle!!!
Both my Series 2A and 3 army landies had the hook which could be locked/unlocked, but it is different with all the newer stuff.

Juddy was selling new Dixon-Bate NATO rotating pintles with the locking tab recently.

They also look wrong because they tend to sit upside down without the lock.

Hi there

Although it sounds like a dumb question, to prevent the leg injuries from the kids climbing in the back (when swivelling) how do you fix them

Hi Wayne,

The current lot are made so they cannot be locked by anything on the pintle.

If you take it off you may be able to see if you can drill for a vertical pin through the mounting bracket into the rotating shaft.

If this is an available option I would pin it in the 90deg "horizontal" position so that you (a) have a better step and (b) can't accidently hitch up a trailer with a fixed lunette.

I reckon there could be a few other "rural fixes" available too if we took the time to think about it.

And if you can get hold of one,  you can replace yours with one of the older lockable type (there would be a few in town ?   ;D).

regards - Laurie

I have to agree if you step out of the back and put your foot on the pintle, it could cause a little accident, if you slip

I will be swopping mine over to the Locking type, I also have the  standard just spins around, I know why its like that, still the others better.

I would like to swap mine out for a combination pintle and ball so I can tow a regular trailer, I may have to keep an eye out for the local council truck, and souvenier one.
Anyone done this ( legitameteley) and have any pics

Yeah I got one of those too. The only problem is you can't tow a fixed ring trailer.

What is the rated towing capacity for the perenties?? The technical description says 900kg but that seems a bit light to me.

Does anyone have the instructions for "un modding" the lunette on the trailers to make it rotate so i can use a no 5 trailer on a fixed Pintle combo hitch ?

Hi,

Quiet an easy job once you get into it, take the ring off by undoing the 8 nuts on the flange, then you will see either a cassellated nut or a nylon lock nut, undo that, then you will see the locking washer, the waher has two slots, one to lock the shaft and one to let it swivel about 3/4 of a turn, anyway have a go you'll work it out

I think there are photos in the trailer section.
