FFR Ignition Coil
« on: December 21, 2013, 07:14:55 PM »
I'm chasing a misfire on my FFR when it warms up. It has also refused to start a couple of times recently.
I was about to fit a replacement coil and just wanted to check what type.

A resistor type is currently fitted and there is either a resistor or suppressor in the supply line to the coil (bolts on the bracket on the rocker box).
Just checked the wiring diagram and it doesn't list a resistor but there is a zig-zag line leading to the coil (with no number beside it) which I assume is a resistor.

So I need a resistor type ?

Hi Colin

Before you replace the coil, have you checked the rotor button.  The FFR have a noise suppressor in the button which have a reputation of failing.

Thanks Diana.

I'm not sure if the rotor button is the original.
I've been looking in a FuelMiser catalogue and there is a Peugeot/VW rotor that looks a direct replacement. I'll have to wander in to Repco with the FFR button and check it out dimensionally.
I also found a condensor that looks like it might fit.

If its original, when you look at the top of the button you'll see the brass conductor, about 2/3 away from the centre there is a suppressor then the brass continues to the tip.

Ask "The Booger" about it and travelling to Corowa in 2009.

Regarding the rotor button....Seems OK on a resistance test but I'll see if I can source a replacement. If the suppressor fails a wire soldered between the contact in the centre & the tip would get you out of trouble.

The coil that was fitted when I got the FFR is a Bosch 9 220 061 100 which seems to be a non-resistor type to suit VW, Audi, BMW etc.
A spare motor came with a coil fitted and when the original failed I used this. It turns out to be a resistor type.

At the moment I'm still not sure what coil type to use because of the device inserted into the feed to the coil. maybe I'll just hitch up a meter and see if the voltage drops after a while.

Connected a meter to the coil feed and no voltage drop over time so installed a non resistor coil.
Started straight away, if the rain stops I'll move it and leave it running to see if the misfire has been cured.

Running a resistor coil (6V ?) on a non-resistor vehicle would cook the coil. The coil was an unknown anyway so it's now resigned to the bin.
