Clansman mast head VHF antenna base (pineapple) info wanted.
« on: August 02, 2013, 10:30:42 PM »
I have a UK Clansman antenna base element.  It is a VHF antenna, but more than that I know nothing.

Has anyone used them?

1.    There are two terminals, one the BNC coax the second is a female bayonet connector without a contact.  What is it?
2.    Is the antenna base an autotune or a ground plane only?

Hi Diana,

It is used with

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RACAL-CLANSMAN-EVHF-RADIO-ANTENNA-3-SECTIONS-inc-bag-353-351-352-/261254079400?pt=UK_Mobile_Phones_Communication_Radio_Antennas&hash=item3cd3f4e3a8

and probably mounted on

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CLANSMAN-MILITARY-5-4mt-MAST-KIT-EKGSA-GSA-/151091837421?pt=UK_Collectables_Militaria_LE&hash=item232dc679ed

I believe it is a broadband matching unit 30 -76 MHz, however I have heard that it is fairly lossy and not very good for 6 metre band( not confirmed).

The antenna is I think a dipole like the 1760  US antenna.

I do not think it uses a ground plane

Is it a BNC or C connector?

Regards

Hi Peter

I don't have the UK Racal mast, what I have is an incomplete AN/RC-292 (missing the antenna assembly), we've made an adapter to fit the pineapple into the tubing of the mast.   The antenna elements are very similar to the AN/AS-1729 elements.

The antenna connection is a BNC

We're erecting one of the masts as one end of a long wire dipole off the Macquarie Lightouse at Vaucluse for International Lighthouse Lightship weekend in conunction with VK2BV.  I was considering sitting the pinapple on the top to see how it functioned, yes I have the antenna elements.
