waterproofing canvas
« on: July 17, 2013, 11:03:50 AM »
I would appreciate some advice on waterproofing  canopy on my recently purhased Perentie. The canvas appears to be in good strong condition, however after a heavy downpour of rain the canvas absorbed the water instead of letting it run off. Iam aware that there are products on the mark that correct this, can any body point me in the right direction. Many thanks John

Many caravan supplies stores have waterproofing products like Bradproof, usually applied with a mop or roller.

see: http://caravansplus.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=33

Although I would try a small patch on the turned under hem on the inside just to check it doesn't discolour the pattern.

Also, do you have the roof rack? Check that the holes through the canvas are sealed, if you don't have the rack, check that there aren't holes for one, you may want to seal them with either a patch over the top or a screw, washer and flat neoprene seal.

On the sides, I usually fit a dowell or length of coverstrip inside the bottom hem to reduce flapping and pull the canvas tight against the capping.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Diana, I will try the local camping shop. Yes it does have the roof rack, however the water seeps through the canvas rather than the bolt holes. I am sure it will be ok once I apply the waterproofing, appreciate your help. John

My canvas tilt is starting to get on the same as you water would seep through the canvas when soaked.  I bought some canvas waterproofing compound from Anaconda - I sprayed it on but can be go on with brush or roller.  Goes on white and dries in a streaky manner some areas quicker than others but when dried is not noticeable and works very well.
