Transmission/Transfer Oil

Hi

New to the forum but would like to know what you guys have placed in your transmission/Transfer  gearbox,which you have run for years as ive heard that you need to run non sulfur (OM) straight Oil Mineral oil? If any one can advise it would be appreciated!

I still use diesel oil in mine, both engine and trans I use a heavier oil in the transfer just to keep the noise down a bit

It refers in the manual to take a OM (Oil Mineral) 600 ? , Ex army but these codes are before my time ( Im guessing its like a striaght 90 engine oil?

G'day, I use Penrite EP90 mineral gear oil (from memory) in everything except the engine.

Thanks for your imput everyone, but does anyone know the true meaning of OM-270 (I know its only Straight engine oil)  (Not OM-600) as previous stated. Thats what the service manual reccommends.

OM = Oil, mineral
OMD =Oil, mineral, detergent
OEP = Oil, extreme pressure
The specified oil was originally OM270 for the T35 and the transfer case but was changed to OMD330 about 1970. An engine oil of 50 grade would be about right. Something like Penrite HPR50 could even be used in the engine if it's a bit tired as well as in the transmission and transfer case. Extreme pressure oils should never be used in any case where copper and brass is used because the additives will attack them.

I endorse Bluebell's assertations completely.
The correct oil (by the book) for the gearbox and transfer case is SAE 50 engine oil.
However, For the last 28 years I have used a number of straight gear oils without extreme pressure additives in those boxes on my MK3's. Usually around SAE 180 weight.

Why? Day after day, off-road in low range, four wheel drive, GVM 8ton and the boxes get hot!  The heavier oil stops oil leaks.

The 50 grade oil will give better performance especially in cold weather and will be fine for recreational use.

Thanks Guys for your imput and knowledge, now ill go out and get some oil  and look for brake parts to get the beast on the road !
