They are not really Army/Defence vehicles anymore.  The KW trucks are leased and driven by civilian contract drivers.

At least the S-Lines were originally driven by soldiers.

whats replacing these units now?
The new contracts have all recently been signed with Rheinmetall (MAN) to replace the Unimogs, Macks and S Line Inters with MAN 4x4, and 8x8 vehicles plus a new set of trailers supplied by Haulmark. (There is some doubt whether they are taking the 6x6 version as well.

This contract has only recently been signed (Late 2013)and as a result the projected flow on of vehicles is forecast from 2016-2020.
To fill in the gap the Army has leased Kenworths and Freighter trailers as complete rigs and these are the interim fill in vehicle.
The Kenworths are painted white and bear Australian Defence Organisation regos. rather than Army or ADF.
Where these trucks are allocated to Army Transport Units they are operated and driven by Military personnel.
Following shots are members and truck from 85 Tpt Platoon 26 Tpt Sqn RACT  Amberley.

Tank Transporting duties from Albury to Darwin, run on a regular basis have been using MAN 8x8s and trailers for a couple of years now.

Regards
Glen
