Ok so lets talk about Normal REGO vs Club Rego
« on: May 04, 2013, 05:48:36 AM »
Hello

Finally after the restore of my 1978 S3 GS army landy it was rego time again this month. Looking great and we love using it weekends on the fire trials in the National Parks around here. Between pink/green slip and rego came in at just under 1000 dollars!
Its insane and kinda spoils the whole keeping a hobby/fun car now.

As I am rural in Central Coast would like to know what you fellas do re rego and if its worth using club rego? Thats if you can find one without all the tons of burocracy and red tape added. Is it worth looking into using club rego?

Any advice/thoughts and if any Landy clubs around the Central Coast/Hunter/Newcastle area will be much appreciated.

Cheers

Club rego is a popular choice for hobby vehicles as you say. You can get it from a elegible car club closest to you perhaps. Your vehicle must be older than 25yrs would mean all the S3  ex-army units.
The vehicle must be inspected. States have varying regulations.
REMLR is not in a position to carry historic rego AFAIK.  It's probably difficult as it is a Aust-wide group of enthusiasts.

You would have to look into it but in NSW AFAIK club rego will not allow you to do what you are doing and just use your landie whenever and wherever you feel like it. It's a bit restrictive, and yes, you will have to join a club. Does not have to be a landie club but one that offers club rego.

An alternative that does offer rego.

Hi Francois

In NSW your car has to be 30 years since the year of manufacture.  You have to be in a NSW RMS authorised car club.  There is an RMS historic use policy, but you actually have to comply with the use policy of the car club which may be more oppressive than the RMS policy.

In general:
  • Vehicle can only be used for club meetings and events.
Plus
  • Can be used for other community events approved by the club's registrar.
  • Can be used at events of other approved car clubs when that club officially invites your club.
  • It can be used to drive for regular service or registration inspection.
  • It can be used for regular short maintence drives according to club rules.
  • You can not use the vehicle for commercial purposes or get paid for its hire e.g. movie or advertising production or wedding cars.
  • It can't be used to go shopping or take a load of rubbish to the tip or to go to work etc.
Issues
  • Many clubs won't except modified vehicles even if approved by the RMS.
  • The AMVCS now has a 7 year rule for the age of tyres
  • Some clubs won't allow the display of weapons (active, deactivated or imitation) on vehicles.

If used outside RMS policy and club rules, the vehicle is considered unregistered and uninsured, even if the conditional rego isn't due for renewal.

Thanks so much for all the info and advice supplied.  ::) Much appreciated.

By the looks of it so normal rego seems better else you end up with a nice ornament in the yard you cant use and enjoy anyway! And Landys are working cars where I come from and not just nice ornaments to look at! Whats the point then. I will still look into the RMS rego.

Francoise

That's not completely true.

If you want to drive the car to work full Rego is the only option, however most of us only use our cars on weekends so the important factor is the choice of club.  Some clubs have very active programs and will facilitate attendance at community events or other club events, so you could frequently use your vehicle, in some clubs almost every weekend, while in other clubs the program and external options are limited so the car may well become a garden orniment except for a couple of events a year.

I will have a Landy on club rego by the end of the week.
All the forms are done except for the roadworthy which should be done next week.
I am not a member of any Australian 4WD, Mil. Vehicle or Landrover club but I am a member of a classic car club which has no interest in four wheel drives, military vehicles or driving off the bitumen. Their idea of roughing it is spending the night in a four star motel.
The rules here in Vic. are different.
I have to be a member of an authorised club.
I don't have to be on a club run.
I must fill out a log book before I travel.
I may travel on 45 or 90 days of the year.

There are a few other conditions. This means, I can drive it to Corowa even if the club has no interest in that event.

Thanks Diana  :-\

So if I join the right club in the area that have events weekends in the area it would still be OK? I dont drive the Landy to work but we really enjoy doing the fire trails and roads in the National Parks in the area and try and stay off the tar as much as possible. Much more fun!

I recently got retrenched at work and as you know this is now the time to really turn the cents around and try save money big time where possible. Hence looking at the club rego after this current rego goes next year. Doing stuff with a Landy club in the area will be just awesome  ;D

I will still appreciate if anybody can advise any club name and details in the Central Coast, Newcastle and Hunter area as it will be great to do club outings in these areas!
