Welsh Plug Sizes
« on: April 24, 2013, 02:16:39 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am replacing the 2 welsh (or core?) plugs just under the exhaust manifold. I cant find a genuine LR part to replace them, so I will have to go with a generic brand.

Is 1 inch the right size, and is it best to install them with a smear of Stag or other sealant?

Kind Regards, Will.

G'day Will,
are you after the screw-in plugs (there are 2) or the larger knock-in expansion plugs (there are 3)

the screw-in type should be 1" aluminium

the knock-in type should be 1 61/64" zinc plated steel.

(the screw-in plugs are available from Four Wheel Drives (sales@landrovers.com.au)

Yes, always use a non-hardening sealant for a guaranteed seal - Loctite 515 works very well. Hardening-sealant, presents the risk of too much squeezing off into the cooling system and blocking a core-tube,

Thanks Cookey and Chazza,

After further inspection they are definitely threaded, and are 1 inch in diameter. Its good to know they are aluminium. I will check with Blackburn FWD and fingers crossed they have the parts. I will also try and get some Loctite 515. Is Stag a hardening sealant?

Once again you guys have been really helpful. Cheers, Will.

I tried 515 when I assembled my engine and found that it did not lock them in place. The threads were not a good fit, they were loose and this allowed them to screw through into the water gallery. After some research I used loctite 243 which is a thread locker with sealing capabilities.

Don't know what happened on my previous attempt to post!

Yes, you are correct Rod. 515 is a flange-sealant not a thread-locker; I used it on my S1 threaded plugs because they were a very tight fit in the block. All of the thread-lockers will seal against oil, water, etc., which is why they are a good idea where we don't want threads to rust together, such as under the car,
