Just when you don't need it!!!!!
« on: March 22, 2013, 06:00:19 PM »
Just when you don't need something EXTRA to do, Murphy's Law dictates otherwise. Yesterday I was underneath a couple of Land Rovers armed with a torch, just looking, when I noticed that all of the paint was bubbled/flaking off the rear inside wheel of 'Wee-Wullie', shock horror, Anzac Day is just up the road.
'Op Rubic's Cube' swung into action,  7 vehicle movements later I had the offending 88"GS in place, and in under 60 minutes reduced to this

I will take the 2 wheel rear wheel cylinders to Maitland in the morning, hopefully have them back by Thursday, fingers XXX'd as it's a long weekend :( anyway cheers Dennis :)

Yeah, no projects ATM, I suppose I can't complain as I did replace those wheel cylinders back in 2000, that was the Lawson BFB vehicle I bought of Hilton, cheers Dennis

It's a SIIa, they still had the pintle locks at that time.

IIRC they were removed from the SIII in the 1980's.

Some of us have retroffitted the locks back onto our SIII.

Dennis, do you change the brake fluid every two years? it would probably save the hassle of doing jobs like this,

This morning I went off to the 'Nostalgia' festival in Kurri, only 1 Land Rover there (rat rod) 302 Ford engine etc etc, I really liked the Chev cab over truck very nice indeed

We came home early as it was too damn hot, so not to waste time, I repaired a fuel pump

then stripped down a set of front light bodies from a mangled front wing section, all the small 4BA screws etc came undone with minimal fuss :o, I run them all over with 4BA tap n die, so when and IF I ever need to use them ;)

well that was my Sunday along with edging and mowing etc etc.
Back to the brakes, No Chazza, I don't change brake fluids, those wheel cylinders have been insitu since early 2000, so I guess almost 13 years without a leak is pretty good, once lined in Stainless methinks they will see me out LOL cheers Dennis
PS I don't have any room here for anything new (project wise) if I did I would be looking at getting an Inter,,.

Hi Dennis

Now Mick has suggested it, I don't think we should let him down.

When do you want me to de the swap over?

After that you wont have to do fuel pump repairs to fill your time!

Well for once, everything went as planned, the rear wheel cylinders went Monday and were back ready to go yesterday @ 1430 hrs, I decided not to get out in the traffic on the New England Hwy around Maitland at that time of the day, I picked them up this morning at 0715 hrs.
Back home by 0800 hrs, two small dogs (people) had a visit to my place employment, residents had been asking me for weeks when are they coming, so I decided this morning before I get dirty. The job didn't take long to put it all back together, as usual I run a 3/8"UNF plug tap into the 2 x 3/8"UNF threads (pipe union & bleed nipple) just to make sure they are neat.
I don't know why the threads come back really tight??, but after the tap they are spot on.
Offer up the wheel cylinder to the backing plate, introduce the pipe union, and screw it home. It's easier to do it that way than trying to bend the tubing to suit and pick up the thread (so easy to cross thread >:( ;)) once that has been done fit the 2 x 5/16"UNF nuts & spring washers, nip the cylinder up tight, fit the brake shoes (you should have already cleaned them etc) fit the drum, bleed the system.
Well it all went that easy, vehicle is now back on it's wheels

anyway cheers Dennis :)
I must remember to do the front cylinders after Anzac day,,.
