stupid question 101 - cigarette lighter?
« on: May 20, 2016, 12:14:57 PM »
Just purchased a 6x6 from minto and am organising myself to fly down and drive it back to brisbane....
I won't have any tools or anything with me so I've got the KLR guys giving it the once over for me before I jump in it and drive it 1000k's

but onto some basic logistics - I'll be packing some headphones and earmuffs (in case the headphones aren't enough).

I know it may go against some of the purists (masochists) but I imagine after the first couple of hundred k's i'll be desperate for some kind of music... I'm going to assume the perentie's don't have cd players  ;D but do they have a cigarette lighter plug or some kind of power source I can use to keep my phone juiced up? if it's not a standard cig plug socket what is it? any way to adapt it to a cig plug?

and i've heard horror stories of sitting on 80kph on the highway... and also heard others say they sit on 100 no problems (just with a bit of noise). people with real world 6x6 experience please chime in and let me know what i'm up for...

The Sixbies have different Diff Ratios so not very good for cruising on much more than 80kph.
Can do more but you pay the price with noise, fuel useage and reliability as well.

Might have to grin and bear it and keep an eye on the rear mirror for overtaking traffic.
Consistent travelling will make up for the slower average speed.

Perenties come with the age old two point power outlet but would need to have the
adaptor with you already and set up for your music box etc.
Something to set up when you get home.
Strangely enough, if you bought the 6x6 IMV there is two cig lighters down
the very back of the deck area.

There is a 2 pin inspection light socket same as older LR.

For your phone you could go to supacheap or jaycar and get a 20000mAh aux phone power pack, with a usb cord to connect the phone or ipod music gadget. Always useful to have of those.

A cheap one, much lower capacity, is here:

good idea on the usb power pack for the phone - will need to grab one over the weekend.

i guess it's 80kph all the way then - maybe on the downhills i'll hit 90 and feel like i'm flying  :P

Gooloo
The 6x6 perenties do have ciggie lighters.
80 to 85 is plenty, remember, 98 is flat chat.
Mine is an air defence version, far bit heavier than a cargo, but still great to drive.

Lot 18 looks to of had a rebuild, well done on your purchase.

If it's in reasonable condition it should do 90 comfortable. Surprisingly they don't feel like they are doing that speed when you are doing it. At least mine doesn't. Nice pickup there mate.

Right on the dash!

It's to the lower left of the speedo, and it's additional to the 2 pin power outlet.

Depending on the variant of 6x6 you have, there could be another 2 or 3 in the rear body module.

The last pics were crap, so here's some clearer ones.

The 4by owners have mentioned a 2 pin power outlet, it's a Lucas item so you can ignore it. It's only good for the Trouble Light and ....... well, nothing else!

As for sitting on 95km/h, don't forget that the 6x6 has a GVM of 5.6t and is classified as a heavy vehicle. As such, your maximum legal speed in any state is 100km/h (and many areas where it is much lower than the general traffic limit). Both the New England and Pacific Hwys are saturated with both Speed cameras and point-to-point Average speed cameras. No plates for the cameras? That's what the UVP's for, to tell the RMS who is in that Perentie 6x6 boring it up the highway. And Truck speeding fines are much higher than Car fines. You can lower the GVM to 4495kg when you get rego, but until then.....

brilliant... thanks for the pics.
i think i'll pickup a usb power pack just in case... don't wanna tempt the wiring gods on my first trip.
point taken on the speeding - i don't think i'll be breaking 100 at any point and will be extra cautious in the 60/80 zones where with enough of a run up I guess there is the potential to speed

only a few more days to go until maiden voyage!
