Title: Alternator excitement

I have a curious issue with my alternator I am yet to solve. Hoping you guys can give me some clues of things to look at.

Every time I start my 1988 FFR, the battery light remains on. Voltage is 12.6, a good indicator that the alternator is not charging. If disconnect the 3 pin plug On the rear of the alternator and re attach, the alternator kicks in and voltage jumps to 14.4

I thought it might be dodgy connectors on the plug, so I put new spades on.
Issue still remains.

Any ideas?

Anyone got any ideas? I just canít work it out.

I found if I short the IG pin to the L pin momentarily (feeding 12v into the lamp relay circuit), the alternator excites and then runs fine until I need to shut the engine down and restart it.

Sounds like you have have a dodgy connection or a broken wire at the plastic plug.

A helpful video came out just today, on a Defender alternator, which looks similar to the Hitachi one in Perenties, goes well through the "excitement" etc ---- very informative in general.
