Title: No 5 trailer and ARN Number
Post by: ozeraser on June 26, 2018, 11:37:22 AM
Gday all,

I scored a trailer at the local SA auction.

The Auction and frontline showed it as 101303 (no log). However i cant seem to find these details anywhere on it. The only number i did find was a 91 to the right of the rear tow hitch.

I looked at the water release holes on the trailer no numbers there. and I crawled arround under it to no avail.

Any ideas? Its not vital , i was just intrested.

The numbers were all over the place, if it's not stamped on one of the tub tabs where the bungs are at the front, I have found them on the top of the rail frame (angle iron) on the RHS of the trailer, but to view it you will need to lift the tub to see it, cheers Dennis

Good pick up Mate,

The Christmas Tree with 5434 is 16 AD  or 1 ALR  (Air Defence Regiment).

Cheers

Oh i looked under and saw the diagonal angle iron.. that looks like a lot of undooing of bolts to get to it :P

I went to the SA rego today but they want an inspection (flyer attached). I also started 3d printing up a female NATO plug, but haven't sourced any plugs yet, just seeing how well it would work.

So whilst I have a captive audience, pintle hitches and old series 2... Does the pintle ring fit in the attached style hitches?

101-303 is the Registration Number (or number plate) of the trailer. It won't be stamped, engraved or plated anywhere on the trailer. What you might find are various 2, 3, or 4 digit numbers on the chassis or tub. However, as the trailer appears in the photograph to have undergone an extensive end-of-life rebuild by Tenix, as well as the possibility of many other smaller refreshes over the years, the numbers you find will almost certainly NOT be the original numbers that were on the trailer originally plated as 101-303 back in 1963.

The Army had an odd (to civilian eyes) approach to vehicle ID being solely the Number Plate (or ARN). Serial numbers, chassis numbers and VINs have been swapped around over the decades after repairs, rebuilds or re-configurations but the constant identity followed the number plate, not the chassis or serial number. This is the opposite to the approach used by the civil authorities, and can often cause confusion.

If you are allowed to nominate the trailer's chassis number for SA Rego, I would recommend keeping 101303 in there, and maybe add your initials.

Oh and BTW, I am in fits of ecstacy over the number 101-303 being a 16 Air Defence ARN , even if it is just a trailer number. Put it on a 101 Rapier truck and I'm in!  ::)

I'd be stamping ARN101303 into the drawbar.

That would be ideal, but the document from ServiceSA says:

"The chassis number can be nominated by you and must:
. be 6-8 digits long, and.."

So if he want 6 numbers, he can only have 2 letters before he busts. Maybe "SA101303"?

If you have your trailer service record book - you will see in part 1 the chassis number, add this to the ARN and you have the perfect chassis number which identifies the trailer.  ie.    2122-154677 - I have used this on all of my no 5 trailer in Victoria - not a problem!   Cheers

I'm in SA and have stamped ARN123456 on the drawbar.
Haven't had it registered yet.

AND I am in Victoria where this is entirely appropriate!

Let me know how you go, and what manufacturer it ends up being registered under :) im most probably a month or so off registering, need to get pintle hitch etc.

Thanks to all the replies.

I finally finished making a 3d printed NATO trailer connection, works well. Ill release design files in the next week or so., not that most people have a 3D printer yet.
