Title: The Grey Ghost's Shed
Post by: the_grey_ghost on June 22, 2017, 11:48:15 AM
Hi All,

I thought that I would drop a line to introduce myself, and show you my military vehicles..

Firstly - my Perentie that I only just bought last week (I expect to be doing quite some reading on the forum)... 48-753 - it's an early one (11/88) with a late (ARB style) bumper.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4264/35455071662_61508dfbe0_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/W23vz1)

I plan to have a good look at it on the weekend.. It's a bit cramped in my garage!

Next up - something to tow around... I bought this about 6 months ago..

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4264/35537714442_b5f569af98_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/W9m5ow)

Lastly - my pride and joy.. I imported this from the UK about 3 years ago - in this cosmetic condition. I have spent a lot of time fixing up the mechanicals (engine, radiator, gearbox, front prop shaft, rear propshaft, springs, shocks, etc). I use it a lot for camping (Birdsville, Maralinga, Corowa)

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4032/34896787763_7da153ffb8_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/VaHadx)

I've got other Land Rovers but they are civilian.

Cheers,
The Grey Ghost

Hi All,

I took some pics on the weekend:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4264/35455071662_702f91a4b9_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/W23vz1)

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4284/35623104535_fec04d4a69_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/WgTHTv)

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4040/35455073082_9f691658e7_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/W23vZu)

I had a friend (another land rover tragic) look over the vehicle, and after inspecting it he said: "Mate you've got a brand new front diff & prop-shaft on there. That's the tightest 4x4 Perentie I think that I've ever driven. Good Buy"... He has been looking at Perenties for a while now, and driven quite a few of them... So gotta be happy with that!

Cheers,
GG

:) welcome Tom, that 101 is very nice. Hope the REMLR info is helpful for you.

Here's a question - for the Corowa Swim-In "Year of The Land Rover" event next March, which Landy will you choose? Going to be a hard choice I think.

FFR 48-753 was notable at the auctions as it has a very unusual ROPS & rear canopy bars setup.
If you have the logbook, have you seen any entry that may explain why it was done?

Hi Carzee,

I am planning on bringing both - the 101 & the Perentie..  :)

I had a look at the ROPS on the weekend, and unfortunately I don't know enough about the standard set-up. I can tell you that it looked "new" to me - like it had been replaced in service.

Unfortunately the vehicle didn't come with the logbook :(

Cheers,
Tom.

do you have a photo or a link to the Grays sale and we can have a look, perhaps it's just a front one with the stays, put on the back (facing forwards). This would be unusual although I have seen a couple done like this in service

Scott, the rear bar is a front one as you say but there are additional ceiling bars running front to rear.

Tom, some explanation has lobbed regarding the ROPS, just a coincidence too.

An ex-service member popped up last night on facebook with some interesting info when discussing a damaged air-drop LR110 and he said:

"If anyone has any of the ex 8/12 ffrs ( double barrel ROPS )... I'd be keen to see a pic.... I pulled them all to bits and put them thru AQIS for shipping back to Australia."

...and a photo of FFR 48-975 (with UN "INTERFET" markings) was posted. (see below)

Then he said:

"In this pic you can see the modified rear ROPS... I think there are only 6 or 8 like it... not sure if the mod will have been reversed."

So thats some good news for you. 48-753 was in East Timor like my son's FFR.

Hi Carzee,

Thanks very much for the info - I will try and take some more detailed photo's this weekend for those that are interested, weather permitting... :)

Richard mentioned that he has a photo of mine (48-753) in action, being air-lifted.. I haven't seen the photo yet but I'm quite excited about it.  ;D

Hi All,

So my replica TAC plates & number plates arrived the other day..
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4300/36173617752_17863829f9_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/X7xfhG)

The Perentie has been at the local mechanic and had the following work:
* Complete fluid drain & change
* All Filters changed
* Installed a traxide light upgrade kit (relays)
* Installed a low coolant / engine saver
* RWC...

So the Perentie is now ready for registration...

Last night when I got home, I attended to some minor cosmetic stuff...

I figured that the traxide upgrade would be good, but with these being a little dirty/cracked..
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4431/36342316955_53b800a12f_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XnrSFD)

Now they look like this:

Title: Painting Plastic.. 48-753
Post by: the_grey_ghost on August 03, 2017, 01:59:06 PM
Hi All,

Last night I noticed that the mirrors & grill are looking a little tired.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4337/36342317705_6983475d22_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XnrSUz)

A little elbow grease later, they now look a bit better:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4353/36342317285_38793c3f1e_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XnrSMk)

I'm certainly not after a concourse look, or factory fresh - but what are other people doing?

I achieved the above wit Armorall - but what have other people been doing?

Tyre Black polish?

Re-Paint the plastic - if so, is there a specific paint for plastic?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
GG

Or you could paint them AUSCAM colours.
Get a few cans from Protec.

They appear to be that colour in those "in service" photos.

Hi All,

Last night when I got home I experimented with the magic of Lanolin:

I am very pleased with the results. I will finish off the rest of the car over the weekend.

Cheers,

Scott reckons baby oil is better. I massaged baby oil into the Perentie with excellent results. I'll do the 101 when the weather gets a little better.

Yeah I've done both and baby oil is so much better and your car smell nice too! But seriously lanolin will leave white scum after about 6 months baby oil stays clean.

Hi All,

Managed a few jobs on the weekend... Bought & installed the pioneer tools. When the weather is good - I will probably paint the handles black & the axe head green:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4371/36305873800_5f0ca07c27_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Xje6po)IMG_0833 (https://flic.kr/p/Xje6po) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Then installed the air hose from the air filter to the drivers side wheel arch..

Then removed the spare wheel, inspeacted it & cleaned it.

I did take some photo's - but no matter how hard I try, I can't post more than 1 picture at a time per relpy..  >:(

Cheers,
GG.

You can do up to 3 pictures then just do a reply to post and add another 3 etc.
Title: Re: The Grey Ghost's Shed

Hi Juddy,

Maybe it's the way that I am inserting my pictures... Here is the method that I use (and have been using on AULRO without issue)

I use "flickr.com". I go to the album, select the photo, select share, cut the "BBcode", then paste the "BBCode" into my reply.

Here is the new air filter pipe:
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4422/36531669552_9aa4e0da15_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XEbmBA)IMG_0835 (https://flic.kr/p/XEbmBA) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Now - when I try to do the exact same thing with my next photo I get an error "Error 403: Forbidden"

When I remove the 2nd photo (or any additional photos) - it works fine.

I've tried Firefox & Google Chrome - same issue.
I've tried cutting & pasting the "embed" code in Flickr - get the same error 403.
I've tried cutting & pasting the "BBcode" in Flickr, using the insert image button - get the same error 403.
I've tried cutting & pasting the "share" code in Flickr, using the insert image - but the picture doesn't show up.

How do you post up multiple photos in the same thread? And as an extension - are you using Flickr?

PS - When I first joined REMLR, I didn't experience this issue, although I was using Photobucket and the time and have moved across to Flickr..

Cheers,
GG.

Size of pic is most likely the problem you can try the attach option at the bottom of your post as well
Title: Re: The Grey Ghost's Shed
Post by: Ravvin on August 21, 2017, 03:47:45 PM
Actually, I think the issue is the forum is seeing them as external web links, not pictures.

In the Post Reply box, instead of just pasting your link, try using the Insert Image button, the little Mona Lisa one just below the B for Bold font button, and pasting your link between the [.img][/img.] things it inserts. Your Flikr pics should work then.

None of the pics in the posts that you have updated today are showing for us as they are all hosted on Photobucket.

Greg.

I think Photobucket has done itself no favours, making it a subscription only app.  I certainly wouldn't bother with it anymore, and it has made wonder when others such as flickr will also go the same way.

Hi Boys, The 5333 on the Christmas Tree is the unit number for 4 Field Regiment  RAA. Cheers, Mick

Yesterday I picked up a Haulmark 3/4 ton trailer from AFM Minto and it has one marking, Christmas Tree with 5333.
Logbook says all of service from new in 2005 to 2016 at Townsvl with 4Fd Regt.

Stevie bid on it when I was at work, didn't do any pre-bidding inspection, just needed a tailgate trailer, random choice by him, and it turned out to be a match to GG's FFR marking.  8)

Hi Boys,

If you jump on YouTube and search Australian Army - Dear Mum . You'll get to see 4 Fld on exercise circa 1975.

"Dear Mum" is a old recruiting film  good for a laugh and I love the sound of the power dividers as the F1's spear down the road.

A Molly Meldrum would say , do "yourself a favour".

Cheers,

Mick
