i decided some time ago that i would build an off road trailer to tow behind my perentie. inspired by the ruggedness of the military trailers available i jumped on autodesk inventor and after some procrastination, i finally came up with a design i liked and set out ordering materials and parts.
here is the design i came up with

i then found some wheels on eBay to match my percentile wheels.. i found 4 of the old 5.5"x16" steel wheels, sand blasted them and coated them in olive drab, i bought 2 sets of xxl's from minto as well, one set for the perentie and a set for the trailer and spares.

most of the frame fabricated, I'm a boilermaker and work for an engineering company so Im doing this project there.

I've got for days off this weekend for anzac day so on saturday I've installed the jockey wheel (ark xo heavy duty off road jockey wheel) fitted the alko rebound springs and axle and wheels, today I've added the shock absorbers, drilled some holes and mounted lights and planned for the next steps,
a pic of the trailer behind the perentie, i think ill shorten the draw bar a little

tail lights fitted

ill work on it a little more this weekend, order some more material for the tailgate and hopefully have it at the galvanisers by next weekend.

It will be easier to reverse if you leave the drawbar as it is. The shorter the drawbar the harder it is to reverse without jackknifing.

thanks BEARMAN i have heard that a few times.. i will most likely leave it then, its not overly long.. 4 meters overall

that's a nice looking unit, would look good behind my 101, exposed frame with sheeting inside that is.

Yep, exactly the look im going for.
Did a little more today, fabricated a plate and mounted the ring hitch, welded on the safety chain holders, picked up some last pieces of material and ordered bolts.
Also took it for a quick tow around the court. Tows well and is easy to reverse. Doesn't hop around

nice workshop !
nice old chamberlain & cummins powered dodge
-
Be nice if you could post up a photo of it all finished and galvanised Ashley. Are you going to put some shockies on it - will make it ride much better.

Yes eric my boss loves his machines. the dodge still gets some use every now and then.
And bearman i did put shockers on, all parts were sourced from couplemate in QLD he also recommended putting them on. Still a bit of work to do but ill be posting more progress photos as i go.

Did you drill holes for the galvanising
-
Did you drill holes for the galvanising
Certainly did, lots.. fully internally and externally vented. Most holes are underneath but I'll be drilling a few more in different places that will be covered by sheet and other things. Dont want any visible holes on the outside

A bit more progress this weekend. Got the tailgate done

Also had a test run of all accessories I'll be fitting to the front and took some measurements

I like that tailgate hinge, assuming it's so you can lift it off easily?
Cheers

Correct steve. Got the idea off a guy at work. can also hook ramps to the angle iron in future if necessary.
-
Very clever idea - I like it a lot !
Great work 👍

The structure looks strong. I'd say over-engineered.
How are you going to clad it? Thin sheet pop riveted on? I reckon gal sheet would work a treat.
-
Nice build. Looks sturdy.

Definitely over engineered. A typical boilermakers project haha. I'll be sheeting it wih 5mm aluminium and large rivets. Possibly countersunk and seams welded.

Again, overengineering.
The Crump & Cornish tub is only made of about 1.6 aluminium sheet. The Track is made of thinner Gal sheet. The BAE systems is made of thin sheet to, 1.2 maybe.

what's the weight coming out at?
I like the look and ruggedness but weight might be getting up there??
-
on the remlr under drawings is the original plans for the machinary trailers and specifications
-
Just a quick update, i got the trailer back from the galvanisers last week, cost a small fortune,
For those asking about weight, I weighed the trailer with a scale we hook onto our crane, total weight with axles and wheels was around 450kg, galvanising added 40kg and I'm using 3mm aluminium checker plate so im probably looking at tare weight of just over 500kg.
So far ive cut and riveted the sheets on, welded all the seams and ive rotated it and painted the underside.
Next step will be to fit the axle springs and wheels and run the wiring for lights and brakes, then i will turn it again and paint the tub and sides, I'm hoping to have it ready for reg by my next rostered day off and I'll book it in up in seamore where its not busy.

Top job, keep the progress updates coming.
Cheers Rob
-
looking great Ashley, looks very solid and well built.
Lucky you're not in NSW where they charge you rego by weight (even the No5s are one rung up on charges and checks)
-
Great stuff. Weight pretty good really.
I'll put my order in now for trailer build number 2!

Haha if you dont mind waiting 6 months for completion.
Yes i was worried about weight to be honest, but comparing to a no5 at about 360kg with 500kg payload and a haulmark at about 450kg with 750kg payload from what ive read, 500kg tare doesnt sound so bad. Its over engineered no doubt but its strong and will outlast me which is exactly what i wanted.
-
if that's the case, 12 months for number 3, Im happy with that!

Springs, axle, shockers and wheels are back on. Flipped it up the right way ready for a wipe down and etch primer in the tub tomorrow

Camo patches will get done once the tub is painted in drab and covered.
-
That looks rather nice.
I take it you are going to put electric brakes on it.

I am, al-ko off-road electric, the magnet is a little different and holds up to vibrations better
-
Finished the paint today. I'll paint the camo patches some other time because my boss is pushing me to get it out of the workshop.
Next week I'll wire the lights and get temp rego and tow it home and finish the wiring there.

looking great Ash !
-
Looks just the ticket mate !!
-
Bloody nice job Ash!
-
Finished hooking up the lights today and took it over the weigh bridge. 540kg. A bit more than i was hoping for but i towed it home on temp reg and it tows well. I can feel it behind the perentie but its not very noticeable. I still have a few more things to finish like brakes, fitting tailgate and latches, gas bottle holder and a few other bits but its almost there.

This is really a great result. Maybe you covered this already, but getting stabilizer legs at the rear?

Not at this stage carzee but in future i think i will. Ive left the corner SHS tube open at the bottom and top on all 4 corners to allow for additions. Eventually id like to have a rooftop tent on it and canvas walls and build it as a dedicated camper
