Hello All,
Yep - top marks to Geoff.... I found this reference, accessed November 30, 2016 from, http://www.lr-mad.co.uk/en/armoured
The Shorland Armoured Patrol Car was designed specifically for the Royal Ulster Constabulary, during the 1960s. It entered service around 1965, and it was to be used for patrolling the border with Eire (Republic of Ireland), to prevent organised smuggling which was rife at the time. The vehicles were built by Short Brothers and Harland in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
There are a number of photographs and quite detailed explanations.
Kind Regards
Lionel

Not your fault but unfortunately there are many Land Rover web sites that lifted great junks from wikipedia & then pass into facts because things get repeated from site to site.
Stories about being built to stop smuggling & stuff about "boat tails" are prime examples. I ventured onto wikipedia & removed the worst of it so it looks a bit thin now.
If you want more valid info on Shorlands I would humbly suggest http://www.shorlandsite.com/

There was a Shorland (on loan) on display at the Tank museum in Narree warren a few years back.

I don't know much about anything but I would say if there was a 'Shorland' Land Rover in Australia, we would have seen it at one of the get to-gethers associated with Land Rovers, my understanding was that you would have great difficulty importing such an item, I stand to be corrected, cheers Dennis :)

Hello Young Eric,
As per this description ... Accessed December 1, 2016 from, http://shorlandsite.com/CarMark3.htm ... Please note - not from a Wiki site :)
The are mostly found in ... "three land rovers in Northern Island meet at a rural VCP (Vehicle Check Point). The driver of the civilian Land Rover is being questioned by a member of the UDR (Ulster Defence Regiment) whilst a colleague looks on beside an Army Series 3 Land Rover. This also provides cover for a third colleague who is less obvious. The other side of the road is dominated by the Shorland, which was often used to provide an authoritative basis for such spot checks. Note the angle iron wire cutter welded to the turret, to deflect or cut wires strung across the road aimed at decapitating the gunner if he was to put his head out of the turret".
I like the way they wrote "used to provide an authoritative basis". Like most armoured vehicles they are designed to protect the people inside and intimidate those on the outside
Kind Regards
Lionel

Actually BAE Systems Australia acquired the design rights & produced the Series 6 Shorland not I'm afraid based on a Land Rover any more. I believe some Police forces had them & there is the shell of a prototype on display somewhere.
