Title: 101 - Number on the rear of the 3.5 block
Post by: fc101 on February 13, 2016, 12:12:14 PM: I have had my 101 for over 8 years and doing some work yesterday I noticed the attached number on the flat section at the top rear left of the block where the bell housing bolts up.

I understand that some other car makes that use the RV8, have their engine number in this position but this is not the case for my engine. The engine number is on the pad on the side of the engine and is the correct number with the BL stamp and CR ratio etc.

So any idea what this number is

Could be a road traffic authority supplied engine number.

If it had been in SA why would they put on another number there when the "real" engine number is quite readable and does appear on the NSW and ACT registration documents.

Do you know if there is a way to check if it is a SA number and I take it that none of your 101 engines have a number at the back.

Post by: fc101 on February 13, 2016, 04:51:02 PM: On a pad at the back of the block behind the left hand cylinder bank. All Rove V8s have the pads. The 3.9, 4.0 and 4.6 blocks that I have all have the pad in the block casting.

On RV8s used in brands such as Morgan and TVR sometimes have their engine numbers on this pad rather than in the usual position.

Mine starts with a 9 and ends with a 0A. The other numbers are obscured but this appears to be the engine number.
Is it part of the block or a bolt on bit?

The pad is part of the block casting for all rover V8s.

Post by: m-coffey on February 19, 2016, 05:34:54 PM: I had a quick look at my imported 101 and it doesn't any numbers stamped on it, I havnt found the engine number yet either but do have a tag wired to the lifting point, I have been led to believe this units motor was ex surplus UK military stock prior to being exported a couple of years ago.

Not knowing if this relates in any way to your engine, but it has been the practice before by various state Police and/or Registration Authorities to stamp an engine block (of any make) with a new "reference" number following the theft and recovery of an engine and/or vehicle. The reasoning behind this is that the original number will be "red-flagged" in the system and will cause repeated headaches for the legitimate owner come roadworthy or change of ownership. The reference number is there to point to a system entry that shows that the engine has been properly recovered or salvaged, and is now legit. The number issue usually contains the initials of the state and the issuing authority, eg "S" and "P" would be typical of SA Police. I think this practice was historic and I've not heard of it being done in recent years; maybe computers have removed the need?

When I registered the 101 back in 2009 I used its correct engine number and nothing was flagged in the system. It was using its correct engine number when registered in NSW in 1997/98 just before it was taken off the road -and it was registered in Qld before NSW though it did have Qld number plates on it when I bought it 2008 (it had been laid up between 1998/99 and 2008).
