Hi Geoff

I took a heap of HDR pics today from Ironfest. Do I have to obscure the plates or can I just upload them?

It was good to see Vietnam era being represented, for too long it seemed that the re enactors demonstrated everything from the Vikings to WWII but nothing later.

The LLH Vietnam era display was a good effort.  :)

SitRepNam's SIIa held pride of place.  8)

Bigger and better next year.

Was sooooo busy that my camera/phone never came out of my pocket, I was coordinating/providing comms, providing First Aid to the AAVA team and Army ring-ins as well as driving the WWII M5 halftrack.

There were all manner of other cameras present though, try the "World of Tanks" and "Wargaming" sites as well as the Ironfest Facebook page.

AAVA had 2 Perentie FFR and a Perentie Senior Commander present along with 3 Cooks bodyworks 750kg trailers and a Haulmark PT1-1.2 trailer.

You could take Paul Britton's image from last year and replace the FV102 in the background with a FV432 you get the idea of one image.

or his
(http://remlr.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=3185.0;attach=11425;image)
and replace the No.5 in the background with the PT1-1.2

"Contact Front" were supposed to be present but the Sd.Kfz.251 (OT-810) developed clutch problems before loading in Brisbane so never arrived in Lithgow.

Oops, it should read 1 perentie FFR, 1 perentie Senior Commander and a perentie FFP (fitted for Pugs) although sometimes it was FWP and it plus the other vehicles were all FWR. a mix of RT-524, PRC-77 and F3 sets

Thank you Diana. Ironfest 16 was one of the best times in my life!
Considering i only had 1 month to form a new Vietnam reenactment group SRN with LLH,  i also was flat out with the 2 week resto on the SIIA posted on here in the shed section.
I think we did an excellent job of setting up having been given so little time to prepare for Ironfest.  Contact front have been doing it for many yrs. Same as another, Vietnam living history in VIC.
We are fast growing with another lines tent already aquired and a nam era International Acco 4x4.
We will be back next year bigger and better than 2016. All we need now is someone in armour to bring a M113, use of the theatrical 60's and someone with a UH1-H Iroquois ;)

Looks like a great day and good to see some enthusiastic re-enactors having a go. One little point re Tac signs. The Unit sign (86) is always displayed on the drivers  (off) side whereas the formation sign (skippy) is always on the passengers (near) side, regardless of whether the vehicle is viewed from the rear or front. You will obviously sometimes see cases where they are worn incorrectly but that is usually because someone involved simply didn't know  or couldn't care less. Keep up the good work!
Regards
Glen

I'm assuming you're talking about a  Mk3 Inter (I'll get flamed if I suggest ACCO is only for civilian trucks) the Mk4 didn't go to Vietnam.

The M113 is unlikely, but its family member in the form of an AAVA M548 TLC is a possibility/likelihood (the Yanks used them in SVN but I don't think Australia did).  As for the Iroquois plans are already in hand for one based out of Sydney, just depends if it's on duty for bushfire support.

Were the tent sections 14 x 14?  If yes Hugh Davis in South Oz makes steel frame kits for them.

I don't know if you're interested but I could loan you some Vietnam era gear, you'd have run down to Western Sydney to pick it up.  I'm thinking of a RC-292 (40 foot VHF antenna mast) a 10KVA gen set (VW powered) or a 24V charging set and I could loan vou a spare PRC-77 with back pack etc.  All to be returned of course.

Diana

Thankyou for the offer, i will let the group know.  The tac plate was on the wrong side for IF16 as i didnt have the stand off bracket made yet and also needed to paint up another skippy 1ATF plate. Ill swap the rears over thanks.  The fold up camp chairs were often seen around Nui Dat , purchased in Saigon or Vungas on R&R most likely.  This one may be a little too modern design though. We got to get some great pics at wings over illawarra with the uh1s you speak off. Shame being x us army vietnam vet hellis they are not restored in true colors.  I could still see the OD paint under chips.

Paint colour is a difficult issue, attempting to get the correct 1960s US Olive Drab for an aircraft in the 2010s is awkward, you had the same trouble when you painted your SIIA in Protec Camouflage Green when the correct colour would have been Wattle Olive Drab, which unfortunately is no longer produced in commercial batches.

As for the chairs, the Army did have a similar chair, usually in deep bronze green with a canvas cover corded together, similar to the one in the pic but without the spring tensioner.  These were nicknamed Chairs Millionaires.  The rest of the presentation was good and my chair comment an attempt at humour.

I would really like to see all the Amoured vehicles come down for Wings Over Illawarra Airshow.  It is the biggest assembly ofmilitary aircraft on display in oz.  The crowd loved LLH / SRN 's display of bofars AA gun, that we were asked to track and fire on aircraft in the air, also they enjoyed a table spread of rifles with blank fire rifle display.   If only the Armoured guys and a couple of theatrical armourers would come we could have an epic battle reenactment display with hueys insertion of the troops.  We had heaps of fun and was enjoyed by all.

Unfortunatly the cost of moving A vehicles restricts us to a couple  of events each year we did look at going to the airshow but the budget would only stretch so far :(
Title: Re: Ironfest lithgow 2015
Post by: SitRepNam on June 08, 2016, 07:04:49 AM
I can imagine the costs involved.  If , a battle reenactment was a highlight of the airshow, there may be a possibility of subsidiary payment for travel costs.  LLH was paid to bring the AA gun and show rifle display as it is a drawcard, and if the weather turned sour as it has previous years, the Bofars kept crowds entertained.
Being on an airfield, there is lots more room for Armoured movement.

Not when TAM  was only offering a box 35sq metres for each armoured vehicle.  You couldn't even turn around in that space. We couldn't see the point in taking 2 days moving the M3 Stuart and M5 half-track, to park them up in a box for a day and a half of an airshow.
Title: Re: Ironfest lithgow 2015
Post by: SitRepNam on January 08, 2017, 10:08:05 PM
Diana i did get a laugh outta the Mchairs comment, excuse my ignorance. ;D   They did have a historical car club present, maybe thats where they were offering the small space. My idea was to have all the military and A vehicles over with our display which had heaps of room.  For A movement they have a huge paddock next to our display in the far corner that would have been ideal for battle reenactment and vehicle movement away from public, if organised as said may be subsidiary for transport costs  etc.

Anyways IF17 is fast approaching.  This year SRN /LLH will have a great display with construction of some new items im currently working on.  We will be more accurate and also looking at having blank fire slrs this time.  Looking forward to this years show,  want to make an even greater display this time.  Anyone that would like to bring a vietnam era Landrover or truck etc is more than welcome to set up with our 1ALSG -86 tpt vehicle display.
It pains me seeing that UH1 not in its original colors.  Lol.  Hopefully it will make an appearance this year.  Would be something else having a cent there too.

Hi Sorry I haven't been around this site for a couple of months.

Already in planning with Ian Rufus and Boris about Ironfest and I may also have my Mk3 Inter present.

My mirth on the chairs got out of hand, many people seem to miss when I'm trying to be humorous.

No Cent this year, but hoping to get sponsorship from a gaming company to bring some interesting armour from Qld.
