Title: Replicating TACs
Post by: Magellan on June 24, 2014, 08:05:15 PM
Hello all

I've been playing around with replicating TACs for RASIGS, 28 Commonwealth Brigade and Training Command for a while now. For the Simpson trip last year I had a Sydney company make up the 28th and 208 SIGs TACs (in honour of my brother-in-law who served with this unit and which I've since 'retired' following that trip). For the TC TACs I thought I'd have a go myself and after some months of colour matching and an abortive attempt at painting with acrylic (it failed to key to the colour bond and peeled) I've finally achieved a respectable result.

I gave up trying to get an exact match (that's the printer in me), what with colour differences from screen to screen and printer and I chose a range that makes John Deere green and yellow, it's close enough to pass scrutiny. I had a local sign writer make up the stencils, ridiculously cheap at $5 ea!

Below is my result for the Training Command TACs, the emblem is slightly smaller than should be but not so much. I'm happy with the fine detail, the only thing that couldn't be done was the hand grips on the swords...a small price. They are gloss so I'll get the local body shop to apply flat clear two pack.

My next project is RASIGS School of Signals, my b-in-law's last posting.  I've done the royal blue/white and am ready to apply the stencil for the red 941

cheers, Daryl

Hi Rod

yeah thanks. I gotta say I'm pretty chuffed, the small imperfections will disappear behind insect strikes and stone chips eventually as they'll live on the truck most of the time

cheers, Daryl

Great work - puts my effort to shame. One thing crosses my mind - who made the originals used by units?

Also, you mentioned having a stencil made but looking at the plates I don't see anything that looks as if a stencil was used?

Gedday Howard

the stencils are adhesive plastic film, not the traditional metal plate and paint roller method. The image was worked up on a Mac and the file sent to (?laser) cutter, the sheet of film is fed in, push Start and voila!  ;)
