Title: Minikegs Château - 'Agro'

Well. I guess for the time-being you will have to use your imagination, however right there is the future site of my soon-to-be-acquired 88" Command Reconnaissance code-named 'Agro'.

Its slowly making the trip from Breeza (near Gunnedah) to near enough here, its taken two weeks already and moved 0m. Im being patient while the transport truck keeps breaking down in the hopes that it becomes cheaper..  :-X

Some pics;

And thats about all I know of it till it arrives.

Are they genuine in-service Army spider webs or after-service?  ::)

They look like the spider webs in the CES, so I would say Genuine Army issue ;)

I'd guess the insects/crawlies dodged the screens/defenses at the front end (like on the grille) and found a small gap in security at the back end.

Thats what happens when you contract out security to private industry!  >:(

Don't worry about the live stock inside the old girl. My FC had 35 yrs of chook crap among other rubbish in it. Just get a high pressure washer that will fixem.
Take out any instruments etc that may be water sensitive.
Good find, enjoy the rebuild.

this fortnights update:

Hi Scott....we have been flooded in for 4 days..had     over 8" rain....just went to town today.
I spoke to our friend in there  who is organising the truck...he said a few dramas there but motor men at Hornsby are still working on rebuilding a motor...said they are going as fast as they can...

thank you for being patient Scott...the floods have receeded now and the countryside looks lovely...
I spoke with the truck repairers this morning..they believe it will be ready by Wednesday. However we are going to Sydney on Friday for the weekend and will most likely take someone with us to drive it home  on Friday and make sure it all goes ok.....so at this stage all being ok we should get to the other property one day next week and will bring the landrover back then...will keep you informed

May I introduce.. at long last

It has arrived on the back of a cattle truck.. because that seems the most logical way to transport it from the boondocks..

And then a tilt tray transport seemed the easiest way to get it off in suburbia
(http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa81/minikeg/02-1.jpg)

A quick tow up the side of the house..

A further nudge into position..

We'll have to put the definition of manky in our dictionary first.

I was going to mention that it's hard to tell the SII and the SIII shortys came out of the same factory, soooo different.  :o  ;D

Well, now the journey begins, breathing life back into 110-415!. It looks from here LOL a strong basis for a restoration, I will come n look at it asap, I viewed the images after we spoke last night.
I can clearly remember seeing 'Castrol' in the parade in downtown Cooma in 98, with all you kids in the back, you were following Mary aka 'Mallee Fowl' in her S2A 109 KGB-***, I looked long n hard at the 88"GS as it went past thinking to self, 'I would kill for one of those' LOL n look what happened to me.
After tracking Ross down through an advert in 'just cars' I showed him this image of a Land Rover
(http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/Lot3592akaChloe.jpg)
Ross looked at the image and said "Your going to restore that??!!", yeah was my response, and 11 months later this is how it looked
(http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/LovelylittleChloe.jpg)
anyway enough of memory lane..
I noticed a round laying in the parcel tray ?.243 or something similar, a PL 259 plug and other rubbish, the Nom/plate isn't too badly damaged for a property run about.
Why are you not putting the vehicle in your garage??, in there you can work on it no matter what the weather, I have found that vehicles standing on wet ground deteriorate quickly, so be carefull, anyway it looks a lot better than the basket case I got to work on
(http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/pix1.jpg)
anyway enough of my ramblings, cheers mate Dennis
ps the dash/bulkhead must be a good spot, here is the same thing on my S2 C/R as first seen!!

Too many toys in the garage, and too long a project to take up all that space!

All these, and another dirt bike, and my road bike make it a bit of a mission to walk to the workshop out the back let alone fit a landy in there

Add to that 12 4wd tyres/42RU server rack/couch/fridge/shelving all round.. its pretty full in there

As you can see I have made a quick visit to Minikegs place, I had a good look over the vehicle, it is a better vehicle than my S2 C/R was at the start. I did ask Scott if he had tried to start it, Nope was his response, so I had a quick look under the lid at a few things and determined No spark at the points, a quick hot wire and fuel down the throat of the carby and away it went.
Looking at the clip Scott has put up, I would say it has a blown manifold gasket.
Looking inside the vehicle I came across this small item, is this one of the mystery items that held the jerry can in place???, I can remember seeing one a long time ago on the net, ?? some one from W.A. bought a S2 C/R and it was found in it, but I have been unable to unearth that thread, anyway a image of the item
(http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/IMG_1320_zpsdd702f3b.jpg)
Scott assures me that under all the dirt it has the remnants of DBG, but me being colour blind cannot see it
(http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/IMG_1321_zps0708de01.jpg)
anyway cheers Dennis :)
PS maybe ZD might know if he looks in here,,. ;)

This isn't the bracket that fits on the RHS of the transom behind the driver is it?

I'm sure there was also a thread on EMLRA also.

No Diana, that bracket is in place on Scott's Land Rover, what caught my eye with this piece was the angled arm and the chain, it struck something in my brain LOL. The bracket on the back of the transom held the 1/4" (BSF/UNF??) dia 'T' bolt with a big brass
wing nut, I have a very badly corroded T bolt & nut, but nothing else, cheers Dennis

Love that Dennis got the donk doing its thing.  ;D

Diana, manky means completely cruddy and filthy - I mean proper plumber-filthy, soaked in sewerage and mud then dried out by hard work etc. Similar to the under side of some Landys.

Crud, noun; A vile substance built up on the undercarriage of Land Rovers, a compressed mixture of cow pats, grease and the tears of environmentalists

Cruddy, adjective; Akin to crud, likened to manky, sometimes interchangeable with the definition of the Australian government

Not to be confused with krudd, previously head of the Australian Government considered by some redheads to be a vile substance to be put up on the back benches of parliament. see: manky.

Agro Update

Rust: So far, little rust has been observed; Radiator support, Bonnet/door/tailgate frames - fantastic. Firewall - two extremely localised holes, easily fixable. Chassis, some in the front right dumbiron, rest good so far.

Quirks:
Spare wheel bracket - OEM bracket has survived 10 years of army service, then a further 44 years of civilian farmery and not been lost. (see pic above post)
Front brushguard - Fitted during service but not original kit
Scone Cutters - Fitted during service, but no NATO socket cutout (see pic)
2A 2.25 engine - Fitted at unknown time (during or after service)
Exhaust manifold - Exhaust exits through the guard
Gearbox - Fitted at unknown time (during or after service) missing dipstick
Speedo - replaced by civilian model with no tripmeter
Doortops - Entirely aluminium, unsure what brand they are (see pic)
Doors - Inside skin lined/filled with insulation of some kind
Stepped bracket - On drivers side on rear of tub (see pic)
Passenger seatbox toolbox - Access swingout panel on front to access under seat (see pic)

Pics of Agros condition as received;

The side exit exhaust is the standard for early 2.25 litre SII.  My SIIa Emmett (112-723) had one when I received him but swapped it with Dave (Incisor) from AULRO for his SII command recon.

While thats true, it has not got the original early S2 engine, its a 2A engine.

None of the Army 88" had the 2 litre engine, they were only fitted to 1958 88" and the first 88" command recon were 1959 model 88" which were fitted with the 2 1/4 engines.  So while they were not identical in every aspect both the SII and SIIa 2 1/4 litre engines are functionally interchangeable.  The SIIa engine may well have been an inservice exchange.

Your 'Scone Cutters' are both RHS, you must have misunderstood me when we were talking engines, all the S2 C/R's had the early 2 1/4lt engine, yours has been fitted with a S2A 4cyl engine and G/box, thats why it (G/box) doesn't have the dipstick.
I knew of the existence of the reference image showing that little bracket fitted up with the wheel clamp, but whay I would dearly like to know is what the heck was it for LOL, anyway good to see you n Dad yesterday, cheers Dennis :)

If you are into spiders, stop reading now.
Sadly, Scott used a whole large can of Insecticide and evicted all the little spiders -they appeared from all sorts of places. It was sort of a eight legged stagger and stampede for the exits.

Agro is in fantastic nick for its age. Like it had been accidentally parked on a street in Brigadoon. What a lucky result -it was a roll of the dice and it turned out to be well worth the wait.

Too right it's a heavy load.  If they were regular aussie house bricks it would be 331Kg per layer + 36Kg for the 10 bricks over the wheel arches.  Thats a tonne for every three layers.  :o

Lucky it is tough!

I remember loading up my series 3 with coke can slabs up to the roof for a rotary function where they were selling them.  Settled down the stiff springs beautifully and made the ride nice and soft!

Commodore utes are built on the sedan underpinnings - using independant suspension for a 'comfy' ride.. and have a usable load rating of 4-600kg. Falcons continued using their leaf sprung 80's chassis and kept updating it giving them their 1t load limit on suitable models.

Hiluxs have a load rating of 1t from factory, and this one has uprated suspension by Lovells. Paver weight 1200kg, moved 2 suburbs over on backstreets - the only thing that didnt like it was the tyres.. they were over their load limit, but they are fine.

On another note, picked up more pavers and some roadbase yesterday... I should get out there and start :\

A mate put new parabolics in his SWB Series 1.... and then loaded the back up with cement bags to get the back-end down towards a horizontal aspect...

I only posted the ute as I thought it was a funny pic. The blue metal would be well over the Tonne closer to two and there is 300Kg in the 7 cement bags on the top.

Wasn't suggesting that would happen to the hilux

Not sure I remember who Mary is.

Meanwhile, Dianne has her special day tomorrow, so best birthday wishes there as well.

finished paving last weekend

Have an 11x11 on the way, going to lay the 'good' canvas over some poly-something-or-other 100% UV-blockout white ex-circus tent material and make a budget 'copy' canvas which I can leave on the aluminium poles as a cheap makeshift garage. The stuff is pretty thick/strong/durable so it should be good - for awhile anyway.

:) buying getting pre-stained pavers was a good idea... looks like a job done well.

Tent!

Well done, it looks good condition. Very good. Perhaps it will have a date of manuf.

The boot man is a good friend and helped a lot - but nowadays... who can you trust with hi tech complicated watchamacallits such as hammers?

whoops, probably time for some updates; June & July was super busy on another project, it went well.

Aug/06 Some original paint perhaps? There does only appear to be two coats, a deep green under a olive drab.

Aug/06 Front has all its toughness removed

Aug/06 Worst rust in entire vehicle; only in end cap (sides fine)

Aug/07 Mud/dirt/dust removal waterfall to try and get at tub bolts

Aug/24 Tub up on bricks awaiting stronger help

Aug/31 Hotrod

I only seem to get half an hour daylight to work on it, and thats the days I go straight home on time. Maybe twice a week. As summer hits and more hours become available, more progress can happen. Took radiator out yesterday, was half full of red rust water. Not really pic worthy.

Thats all for now.

I was there to help lift off the rear tub. 50+ years after Land-Rover staff put it on. Amazingly... no rust under there. Good stuff.
