Hey All,
I have rust in the door handle well and pillar.

I am wondering how others treat rust in these areas.

Looks as if the rivets could be drilled out and the well removed?

If so I would then soak the rusty part in molasses and water solution 1:10, until it gets back to bare metal,

Hi Charlie,
I posted a question about the rivets on AULRO and the rivets around the door pocket hold door skin to frame.  The pockets are part of the door skin (I had no idea).  I think sand/media blasting pocket clean and treating with Penetrol or Ospho followed by painting.  I will post followup photos after treatment and repainting.

Be careful with sand blasting on the aluminium skin, it could destroy it.

I am the number one fan of Penetrol, good move to use that.

Can you show us a photo of the inside of the door where the handle goes?

As I understand the cure for this rust is to cut the rust out and patch with replacement part.

Ah yes! Now I understand the problem.

A small hand-held blaster would work, or a flap wheel on a small drill might be useful. Penetrol is at its best, if some rust is left for it to penetrate,

Just remove the door latch and lock and scrape away the rust as best you can on both sides - when all flacky rust has been removed apply rust converter.  When that has all dried I suggest as others have, applying penetrol then repaint with a little penetrol in the paint.  - when all dry spray some fishoil. 

Hopefully in the latch cavity it has not rusted through - if careful you could mig in some new metal but obviously heat control will be needed to prevent damage to the aluminum.  I have welded up the lower door frame on my 101 without issue but I did keep it cool with a sponge full of water - worked fine.

If you mix the fish oil with spraying thinners as a 1:1 ratio, the resultant mix is very very fluid, and will penetrate between layers of steel, or can be sloshed around inside a door or hard to get at area, before draining off the excess. Unlike straight fish oil, which remains tacky and soft, the spraying thinners evaporates quickly leaving a harder surface on the fish oil. Excess can be wiped off using a cloth with a little thinners on it (and latex gloves on, of course).

Fish oil can also be used on cleaned battery terminals to appreciably slow down development of corrosion, as it excludes the oxygen. Assemble terminals first, of course, then dribble/paint a little fish oil over the exposed terminal surfaces.

Thank you for the info.  I've never used fish oil as a spray on a vehicle.  Where do you purchase fish oil?

I used to get it at the local hardware store when in Oz. Industrial fish oil (not the medical supplement) is available in Oz from https://www.mmpindustrial.com.au/products-side/category/62-fish-oil

I have not sprayed that mixture - just brushed it on. It's mixed with spraying thinners because it thins the fish oil so well, and evaporates off so quickly.

Found it!  Perfect for those hard to reach spots.

Since we have had a few dry and warmer days above 50F/10C at home, I have started removing rust with a wire brush, painting on Ospho followed by penetrol/paint.

I want to thank everyone who replied to my questions.

I hope everyone enjoys their Easter holiday.
