Thought I had better post some info on what has been happening to 803 over the past 12 or so months.
ARN 174-803
GS 108"
matching Engine/Chassis numbers wrt to REMLR info
Replaced all brake system, new clutch MC & Slave, new tires, engine started & runs well, no rust in Chassis ends or Firewall, new Wheel bearings & seals, replica ARn plates, replica TAC plates (found original TAC plate), new Engine Bay wiring harness ordered.
So far so good with nil major issues.
-
Sounds like a great project, What TAC signs does it have?
Any chance of some photos?
-
Mike, I believe it is an Artillery HQ vehicle with the Red/Blue TAc.
-
A couple of photos of the resto, tires are the most noticeable aspect. Now sorting the electricals.

Looking good there Barra,
Lots of work has gone into it, almost ready for the road.
You don’t see many of the original round side mirrors these days, don’t break it!!
-
OK - rec'd my new harness from VinWire this week (fantastic job), changed out the headlights to 3 pin sealed beam (from original bulb type) & have installed the new headlight harness. Now onto the remaining harness sets. Then re-install the refurbed instrument panels etc.
Clutch replaced, new friction & pressure plate, machined flywheel to remove rust/pitting so the clutch now operates completely. Seat base back in + new seats.
Removed the damged Scone Cutter from the rear frame, looks like the farmer backed it into a tree. Will see if it can be straightened or build a new one, it is bent pretty badly.
-
Sounds like it’s coming along nicely Barra,
I agree with you, the Vinwire looms are top notch.
Do you still have the rear crossmember connection block on the drivers side? I remember the first loom from them didn’t have any provision for this, so I had to specify it in the next one.
The rear bumpers are made of spring steel apparently, and are quite difficult to straighten. It might be easier to get a replacement fabricated if yours doesn’t come good.
Keep up the updates,
Cheers,
Mike.

Yep, lost a bit of time over the last year, but momentum gathering again. I finally got the new Harness & started to install it so just taking my time on that one. While doing that I had a new "Scone Cutter" made in Caboolture at RedBack Engineering, the other one was a bit damaged. I guess the cockie must have either run out of brakes or forgot that there was a tree behind him - lol. Reasonable cost and a fantastic end result, I did consider trying to straighten it myself but with Oxy + Hyd press thought it to be too difficult.

Well 174-803 is now ready for painting, it runs (albeit the ignition switch needs to be checked to turn it off) & I have the paint for it. She Who Must Be Obeyed was amazed when I drove it forward then reversed it back (saves her helping to push) but as with any project I removed the drag links to replace them. Now I need to replace the Steering Box seal (can you do this without removing the steering box??) so I can move it around. Brakes need adjusting but not a biggie, paint will be applied and then ready to go after finishing off some end to end harness work (NATO plug etc).
-
Good progress Barra,
It is possible to replace the steering box o ring in place.
You need a puller to get the arm off the shaft, and the shaft can then be removed after taking the cover off. Then fit a new o ring.
Whatever you do, make sure that you use a good quality o ring, I’ve seen some dodgy ones that disintegrate quickly, not a job you want to do very often!
Sounds like you will be on the road shortly.

OK so the Landy has been painted, engine runs/stops and still working my way through the vagaries of VINWIRE vs LR/AUST ARMY circuitry. Most is straightforward but got to the Indicator lights + Flasher can & could not work out where it gets its power from. VINWIRE says that X on the can from the BO Switch but there is no X on my can (see photo). Can anyone explain where the power comes from as Dwg 11123004 does not trace back to a power source. I am a Blackhander so this "smoke in the wires" stuff can, and often does, get the better of me.
-
Oops - forgot the photo of Flasher Can + wiring diagram
-
The Flasher Can - as you can see there is definitely no "X" on it. The actual markings sort of coincide with the relevant Aust ARMY wiring diagram

Hers a bit of a decode Barra,
Courtesy of the Series 2 club forum in the UK.
Hopefully it helps!
-
Thanks for that Mike,
that clears it up beautifully. I never think of the UK sites 'cos I always think ours is a bit unique. Working on Oil Pressure now - not much hair left!!

No worries Barra,
Getting there now, the oil pressure system should be fairly straightforward.
Let me know if you get stuck,
Cheers,
Mike.
-
Thks Mike.
Well I got her running in time for ANZAC Day in Kilcoy, Qld. Issue with brakes but overcame that, oil pressure at sender is good but will now sort out why it is not reading at the gauge. Also found an issue with the 4WD not disengaging so just removed the front drive shaft for the day to prevent transmission lockup. It appears to a simple adjustment but will climb under during next week.
Cheers,

Well done Barra,
Great to see it finally on the road again, terrific.
A few minor gremlins are fairly standard at this point!
-
Thanks Mike,
Txmn turned out to be a cracked selector bracket on the outside of the transfer case so relatively easy to fix. handbrake was over adjusted (my fault) so now good. The only issues are no reading at the Oil pressure gauge so tearing my hair on that one & bleeding the brakes (again). Bit of a noise from the spigot bearing, I should have replaced that while the gearbox was out but can live with that. Drove well, the Qld Police were impressed, did not mind no rego but had "plates" on it showing the original ARN.
-
good to old vehicle from the School of Artillery I believe it was the quick response vehicle for the bush fire threat at North Head.
-
Sorry for the late reply - good to know some of the history of this vehicle glbest. Does anyone have a photo of the front brake slave cylinders installed, LR have done my head in with the bleed nipple being at the lower slave cylinder NOT allowing air to bleed to the highest point.
Cheers,
