Gday, just about to refresh the engine, gear box, transfer case and diff oils. The workshop manual states that the gear box, transfer case and diff oil is the same. The only problem is that i cant find the types of oils / fluids stated. The most recent information on current oils is all for series 3 models.
Any recomendations on the right types of good quality oils would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

EP 90 everywhere is the go!
Manual gear oil 80/90 is what it is often what it is advertised as. I use penrite myself. http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/manual-gear-&-differential-oils/gear_oil_80w-90_%28new%29

I would recommend Castrol EPX80/90 for all of the following,Gearbox,Transfer case,Front Diff,Rear Diff,Swivel Hubs, and Steering Box.also the Relay Box (it is difficult to fill, remove 2 opposite small screws, and dribble some into it,I use a thin piece of wire so the oil runs down it)it takes about 250ml from memory,DO NOT FILL WITH GREASE. nor do you fill the swivel hubs with grease or 1 shot,as they are Universal joints and need to run in oil, unlike the later CV joints which are designed to run in molybdenum type grease like 1 shot :)

Thanks for the information. I replaced the oil in both diffs, the gear box and tranfer case last night. All seemingly went well. Was going to do the engine oil but decided to wait until i have the time to do the sump gasket as it is leaking in about 4 places!
Had trouble finding the fill points on the gear box and tranfer case. It seems there is bypass hose linking the two together? I took the hose off, filled it up to that level on both the transfer and gear box and put the hose back on. I am hoping this is the right thing to do. Next will be steering box, swivel hubs, relay box and cv's.
I reckon the tail shaft need a good bit of grease too :)

Thanks David, very kind of you to offer. I have just sourced and been using the 2 & 2A original workshop manual. It seems to cover all aspects in detail. What is the operators book like? Would it be a usefull addition, and how much were you looking to get for it? Regards,Will

It's not that uncommon for the 2 to be linked in civy life to transfer any leaking fluids fron one to the other as one tends to leak into the other and overflow.

WILL, PM me and I shall post them to you free of charge.

G'day Folks :)
This is /was a common thing with Jeeps during WW11, it is caused by the gearbox output bearing to the tranfer case spinning in it's housing and therefore wearing the housing hole oversize, hense the oil passes from G/box to transfer, but it can do the reverse, transfer to G/box,(mine does) but was used post service by owners, the later S3 army fix was to peg it,by machining a slot in the casing, and drilling and fitting a peg to the bearing, not often seen on GS type vehicles but can be found on specialist vehicles,Bloodboxes,W/shop's Etc.
cheers

I had same problem in a S3. They replaced with a double lipped seal under warranty and no probs after that.

The Majority of the advice here is to run EP 90 everywhere.
The Lube Chart says OEP 220 for the Gearbox and Transfer case which is EP90 and says OEP600 for the diffs which is 85w 140
Should i be getting the two different oils for my 2A?
-
Boxy,
I've always just used EP 90 in everything on the 2A, and its been fine.
That is what the civvy manuals recommend as well, no fancy 80-140 around in those days I guess!
Using the same oil for everything is a bit simpler as well, I usually get in in a 20 litre drum.
How is the 2A coming along?
Cheers,
Mike.

Hi Boys,
From memory wasn't OMD110 engine oil and 220 in the gear box , etc ?
Whatever that equates to Today ?
Good luck Boxy 👍
Cheers,
Mick

That's right Mick. It also says OEP 600 for the diffs and the steering box

OMD = Oil,mineral,detergent......OEP = Oil,extreme pressure..........I would certainly use the thickest EP oil in the steering box,so it doesnt leak..ie EP 140 if you have it......the diffs ,I would use EP85/140...because S2a diffs need all the help they can get.....gearbox thinner oil,or it will be hard to change gear when very cold............There is one big issue, and that is never use a modern car oil in the engine....use a diesel engine oil........the reason being modern car oils are compatible with pollution devices, and can cause excessive cam and lifter wear.
