Title: FUEL TANK REFURBISHMENT
Post by: Mick on July 04, 2016, 01:54:04 PM
Hi All,

as the boys that attended Corowa would be aware I had a few problems over the week with 178 204`s fuel system.  I went thru around six fuel filters, could only use one fuel tank and suffered real fuel issues just prior to Wallan on the trip home.   Mike K saw the muck inside the fuel filter and couldn`t believe how bad it was.

I managed to find a aluminium long range tank on Gumtree and I think with postage included cost around $50.  A bargain.

Here are a couple of photo`s of the state of the tanks.  The muck that came out was unbelieveable, the fact the vehicle ran at all , let alone for over a week was a credit to Land Rover.

Here are the tanks after being dipped at Colourex in Huntingdale , a good job for $60 per tank.

Those Tanks look a lot better Mick,

Having seen the totally choked 6th filter and the pile of sand etc. that came out of it, this job really needed doing!
It think the vehicle will now be a lot lighter without all that stuff in the tanks.:D

Only the long range tank in the tub to go?....

Great job Mick,  don't suppose you want to do mine :P
one has some pin holes up the top, the other took a whack underneath and has a weep at the bung,  (this is why the jerry on the back is mandatory for me ;)

They look good. Did that process treat the inside as well ?

Thanks guys,

Yes Pete, they were soaked in a chemical solution ( not acid) , drained, then pressure washed, one tank needed two cracks at it it was so bad but in the end they came out a lot cleaner than I expected. Some minor  specks of service rust in a few places but so much cleaner.

Cleaning up the feeder pipes and replacing the sender units they'll be good as gold. I'm not bothering with sorting out the mid mounted tank as I really can't see myself using two long range tanks, a couple of jerries then drawing on the 80  - 100 Ltr rear tank.

Not unless we have fuel strikes 😊😊

Cheers,

Mick
