Title: So you think your Perentie has AEU2522 CVs?
Post by: circlework on April 16, 2016, 06:00:19 PM
After pulling the CV's and half shafts out of 49-181 for replacement with HTE 24/23 spline half shafts, I was taken aback to find the early Defender 200tdi half shafts and CV's in there (smaller I.D. axle end and 32 spline)   ... so much for Perenties having the 'stronger' AEU2522 CV,s and tougher mating half shafts.   From research I found that the civy 110 parts book has two part numbers with an axle casing number separator.  i.e. axle casing to #20L48865 is AEU2522 and from #20L48866 is RTC6862.   The RTC6862 has the same external dimensions as AEU2522, but with the small crappy inner and the inners aren't interchangeable.
Both the Defence RPS references I have only state AEU2522 was used.
Luckily I had a spare used pair of AEU2522s to fit the new half shafts, otherwise, it'd be on the hoist for a lot longer.
Is there any evidence that Defence knew of the weaker CVs being used?

There have been periods where certain parts were unavailable. More likely there were put in as a 'better than nothing' exercise.

Quite possible the parts may have been purchased locally and fitted by a 'junior' tradie...or more than likely the vehicle was repaired at a civvy contractor who fitted what was available to them.

Thanks BD and Sixty.
If I can find 49-181s in service record folder, I'll check that out.    :-[

I too learnt this the hard way after a cv joint gave way. I foolishly ordered the 23 splined replacement (AEU2522) before pulling the broken one out, only to discover that I had the 33 splined (RTC6862) version. The old broken cv was a Hardy Spicer, also to note, the half shafts were 10 spline at the diff end.

My arn is 50-260, however my logbook only goes back to 2013.

Finally found my GM120.
Seems the vehicle had at least two front axle ass'y replacements ... @ 19-06-96, 82609km and 26-02-97, 86847km.
So, this supports replacement and not factory supplied.
