Title: No. 5 Lunette and attachment checkover
Post by: Carzee on October 13, 2015, 10:10:57 AM
I was checking over my No 5 lunette. I plan on using the trailer this weekend and it will be its first outing other than the Rego inspection last week.

There are 6 hex nylock nuts, 14mm size, and they hold the Lunette onto the drawbar (or is that drawpipe :) ) using a circle pattern of threaded rod pieces that are welded to the drawpipe. The rod resembles longish wheel studs. I wonder if wheel nuts from a Falcon or similar would do the job.

There is also a grease nipple. Does the grease enable the Lunette to rotate with the rotating pintle hook? Mine may need grease.

I removed the nuts with the help of Inox and had a look inside. The shaft of the Lunette assembly is secured using a large washer and a similar size castellated nut which has a split pin. And thats all there is to see.

So I'm buying new hex nuts today for the refitting and switching to spring washers - or are nylocks used for some very good reason?

If it doesn't turn your lunette may be locked into place the is a thread about them on here some where :)

Does this photo show up in other browsers? Appears that google is changing permissions around.

The thread for the nuts is 3/8 UNF, common enough.

It appears that it is locked. I believe you can remove that nut and remove the plate that is locking it if needed, but if your hitch swivels, it needs to remain locked. Greasing that nipple is not manditory for locked lunettes as nothing really moves but if it will take grease it won't hurt as it will help preventing it from siezing.

Just turn the plate over and it will allow some movement. However it took a lot of heat, leverage and broken vise to undo the nut on mine

When the Army removed the Pintle Hook lock on the L/Rover they modified the Lunette on the 1/2 Ton Trailer so that it would not rotate.

Thanks for the confirmation on that.
Sounds like you remember it well. Mustve been a lot of work when you think of all those trailers...
