I've noticed that there's a metal coil with two wires connected to it in the heater blower duct. Can anyone advise the purpose of this, does it control heat? My heater is lukewarm and little different to the Cold setting.

That is the resistor that controls the heater fan speed.

Your not alone there, my fan's the dodgey bit because of said little coil, could yours be the valve, partially clogged hoses or perhaps the heater core needing a flush? since replacing the valve and some hose on mine with the cheapest generic crap available mines quite hot for what it is, just not much guts behind the fan.

Ah it's not the tap (valve), that and the hoses are new and the fan speed is good. I'll look into flushing the core.

Further to the heater issue, I've had the core flushed successfully and reconnected and it's no better. The new tap was taken out of the circuit and the heater improved a small amount. The orifice in the tap is too small and restricts flow, hence the poor performance. Can't imagine why Land Rover fitted it in the first place.
I'll be sourcing a Mt Mansfield heater from Rovers North, it comes with v.good reviews.

That will be interesting to hear your view of the heater.
R704 the fan has only two speeds, speed one is just moving air, speed two would be a fair and decent speed, My Perentie defrosts the windscreen on negative 5-6 degrees from cold start just idling in 10-15 minutes, when driving from cold under 10 minutes.
Are you getting both speeds?
Just a question to both, how good and effiecient is the cooling system, if the cooling system is performing poor the heater will be worse.

on mine the cooling system seems too efficient and only on the hottest summer days does it hit '80' on the guage.. normally 65-75 :o unsure if normal
heater/fans do not appear to even turn on

Series 111 heaters are dodgy at best I tried an electric water pump to get more flow and
cleaned the matrix.
The problem seems to be too small a matrix and not enough air maybe they worked in England :(

I doubt the heater would've been any better, they'd frozen their buns off there I reckon! If anything ours would perform better given our climate (though Winter in the NE is bloody cold, enough for me to retrofit the Winter Pack to my Series 2 Discovery. Buts that another story) :)
If you look at the lumen of the OE tap you'll see the problem and as you say, compounded by the inadequate matrix

Yes, the Mansfield heater (rather appropriate name I say!) is being made athe moment. Several weeks in the coming as they're made to order and hopefully in time for my annual Winter snow trip.
Re the cooling system, it works well, everything is ticketyboo :) ;)
