Title: 1971 Workshop Trailer - Avdice Sought
Post by: dugite on April 14, 2015, 12:31:23 PM: OK folks, I had a bit of a barn (well barn & paddock) find, I bought a workshop trailer yesterday and I would like to learn a few things about it.

There are a number of pics, I can take more if necessary.

The trailer was a bit overgrown as it had been parked in a paddock out in the weather for a number of years.

Externally it doesn’t look so good, but should be able to be brought up to scratch with a little bit of replacement of rubber and plywood and a repaint. It doesn’t have any dings or dents and retains the rear towing and electrical connection points.

The trailer cover, the fly and shelter sections (which I don’t think are quite complete, but maybe), the floors and the poles & pegs have hardly ever been used (or have not been used) and it has all been stored satisfactorily. The rope bag and the valise are both present.

I have downloaded the CES from the REMLR library which should give some idea about the shelter sections and other bits and pieces.

This trailer has obviously seen no “active service” – probably no service at all. The tyres are perished and the wheel rims are rusted BER.

So if any of you could point me towards any of the following info I would appreciate it.

1.   Is it possible to find out what the ARN would have been? The only stampings are shown in the attached pics (unstamped trailer plate, stamped PMC platform plate).
2.   How was the safety chain attached to the trailer?
3.   The CES doesn’t have NSN Nos, are there any other contents docs that may assist in IDs of parts? (Some of the shelter sections do have NSN Nos).
4.   Are there any plain language erection instructions or manual ? (I have searched and downloaded what is contained in the REMLR library)
5.   Is there any way of finding out the type of workshop platform it was?
6.   What the original tyre size 7.50 16 ?
7.   What parts of the shelter were carried in the valise?

Maybe I’ll need to bring it to Corowa and to get someone to give me a tute ..... :)

Post by: John H on April 14, 2015, 01:38:42 PM: An excellent find and the most complete Ive seen.To answer some questions,1 safety chains not fitted, 2-runs same tyres/rims as a series 2/2a, 3-finding chassis number will ascertain ARN(on my 71 wksp trailer I found the chassis number on the front pax cross bar approx 3inches towards the rear.This required the removal of the platform).Is your chassis one with or without shockies.I suspect it will be a no 5 chassis. 4-it is classed as trl 1/2 ton,platform machinery.These were generic at supply and then adapted to different roles as the unit required.On a side note it left service in the mid to late eighties,due to the OD paint job.Artillery units were amongst the first to recieve the Perentie varients ie GMV which leads me to believe it came from an Arty unit where it sat in the compound for most of its service(based on the condition of the accesories).More photos would be appreciated,especially of the rear stabiliser pole clamps,as mine are a home made job.I will help where possible to provide any info reqd.Cheers Hallsy.

Is there are location where owners fit safety chains or do you you think it's OK just to weld to a convenient spot on the drawbar ?

I will take a look where you said for a C/N, but I wasn't intending to remove the platform.

It is very similar to a No5 chassis, but it does have shock absorbers.

I will take pics of the rear stabilisers ...

thats a great trailer you got there. I have a '71 workshop trailer not as complete as yours. I took it to Corowa this year, they are a great set up. I`m missing most of the CES but the canopy is in fairly good condition. I`ve included a photo of my drawbar that might help you. Hope you enjoy her.

I imagine that shelter erection is not a one man job, and I'm still wondering if there are any pics (other than what is in the REMLR library) or docs/instructions that detail the procedure.

no set up isnt a one man job. I was lucky enough to have FFRMAN on hand when i first had a go. Each post needs to be raised as evenly as possible ( up about 300mm) and the pins inserted. My pins are on chains welded to the post. It doesn`t take much to work it out. Its a good idea to mark your posts in the both horizontal and vertical (with a marker pen)as the posts can twist. Setting up the annex, awning etc is fairly easy and can be done on your own.

When it`s raised and fully erected it`s a great set up. If you look at some of the Corowa photo`s close enough you might get a idea of what she`s like set up. I didnt get the poles with the trailer and now use cam poles cut to a suitable length, they do a great job. My Trailer is marked no. 82 which was stamped at the front right cnr of the body work.

That pic is very helpful, I have both a shelter roof and a fly, I'm told that the fly can be erected on its own.

I know I am missing one angle side support, but I do have the poles(timber & alum), the ground plates and fly mushrooms

If I can get those remaining components I'll bring it to a future gathering (Corowa?) for some instruction :)

Mine is stamped with a broad arrow between a 7 and a 4, on one of the platform attachment brackets at the right front

BTW - nice Ford ute :)

Post by: John H on April 17, 2015, 01:15:08 PM: Mick,thanks for your photos,especially with the canvas up.They do look impressive.I have made a similar set up for mine,based off a 3.6x3.6mtr tarp bought off ebay.,some velcro and webbing etc and hours on a sewing machine(about $250 all up).I made it to be an easy 1 man set up.I agree raising the frame is a pain,Im 5"6 so dont need to worry about it.Marking poles etc with a texta is a must do for ease of setting up.Cheers Hallsy.
