Hi All,
Just picked up a ex army XY Falcon ute. She`s rust free and a little tired but should be a easy resto. She is totally original and even has dymo labels above the wheel arches stating tyre pressure and another label above iginiton stating 60 MPH. I would appreciate any one out there that might have any inservice photo`s of any XY`s. Here are a couple of pic`s. The owner even supplied a unopened tin of original paint.
Cheers,
Mick

That's a Rippa Mick, look forward to checking it out.
-
Hi Scott,
Thanks mate, I see you have been busy shopping too :)
I`ll send you a PM.
Cheers,
Mick

Hi All ,
I also read that Ford were conducting trails of a 4x4 version for the XY ute to add to the Land Rover 1/4 ton GS fleet as the LR`s were a bit slow. Dont know where the trials finished up. Here is the paint included and a couple more pic`s.
Cheers,
Mick

Great buy - a good find in that condition after 45 years -the previous owners really loved it.
I bet it turns heads. As for photos in service.... what about your ARN. I wonder if thats a tad difficult.
-
Turned up only one photo of a Ford belonging to AFV in Saigon, Sth Vietnam:
https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/P08521.003
Its a Galaxy Staff Car for Australian Mjr-Gen Dunston.

Ford made 432 4x4 utes. AFAIK, these are all civy versions with 6 cyl 3 spds and Jeep running gear. Quite the collector item in civy street.
-
Mick
Maybe we start up a new website REMXY's or SEXY for short.
Still annoyed didn't get my HQ but now I'm on the look out for a XY. Maybe one very close to home but too dear!
-
Great looking original ute Mick. It even has the TAC plate holders :o
I will start a new thread dealing with Ford CLs in the army as I have quite a few pix of these vehicles.
-
Thanks boys,
She really is original. Tommy I'll look forward to your photo's. Are those tac holders in the right spot ? And we're there supposed to be some on the front ? I'm thinking of making a cage for the back and turning it into a MP wagon. I remember them vaguely :-)
Tommy how does it compare to the one you mentioned in Perth?
Cheers,
Mick

The Falcon 4X4 ute was a bit of a disaster, even if it is a collector item.
It's basically an XY Ute bolted on top of JEEP running gear, (the Ford parent company in the US at the time were negotiating to purchase the Kaiser-JEEP but lost out to AMC).
The development took so long the XY 4x4 ute (2nd generation Falcon) was sold alongside the third generation Falcon XA.
The 2WD Falcon ute body isn't strong enough and without a full sub-frame were cracking behind the cab requiring the retrofitting of a reinforcement kit. When Ford failed to acquire JEEP the project was discontinued.

TAC plate holders are in the correct position. Front TAC plate holders (x2) were mounted approx 20cms inboard of each headlight. Check to see what holes are/or may have been in bumper or behind grill. Also check behind bumper as the bracket may have been attached under there somewhere. Maybe to the actual bumper brackets themselves.
I did not get to view the XY over here unfortunately. It did look original and complete from the photos on Gumtree. I will see if I can chase it down for you.
-
Hi everyone,
Thanks for that Tommy, I'll look for the front mount holes. I'll post a photo of the other data plate next time , the one I took turned out really blurry. I reckon army XY's in original condition would be light on the ground. Like LRPV's :-)
Cheers

Diana,
Is there nothing you don't know about military vehicles? You are amazing. Look forward to catching up at Corowa. What vehicle are you heading down in?
Cheers,
Mick
-
Do I remember correctly: When the XY utes were in the Army, the tonneau covers were canvas?
Hi Mick
Tommy has more knowledge than I and he has piccies to prove it ! 8)
What vehicle????? Thats a hard one, a Discovery 4, car trailer, ex-UK MoD SIII FFR Lightweight, a 110 Prenntie FFR and a Haulmark PT1 1.2. The only one I don't own is the Lightweight! ;D
If we were near Temora, I could take you to visit a collector with a shed full of military Fords and a civvy XY Falcon 4X4. Back when I was a youth, one of the seniors in the Venturer troop I was a member of had a new XY Falcon 4X4, so we knew it well (I only had a 1960 88").
Diana
-
Hi Diana,
I think some had the canvas cover, a ute at say DSU RANDWICK might have had the black standard ute tonneu , compared to one at 2 MP Coy, it would have the cage with seating , and a canvas cover , and a supply company might have had one with canopy and bows.
I could be wrong :-)
Good luck with your vehicle decision, see you there.

I have an inservice photo of this vehicle. Will post up soon.

Tommy,
Fantastic !

Great to see an XY in safe hands!
We do have some of the ARN details, so finding the registration is not out of the question.
-
Thanks Phoenix,
That's great to know. I'll post details of vehicle soon. I don't think there would be too many restored military XY's getting around so it will be a great vehicle when completed.
Regards,
Mick
-
Hi there guys
I found one of theses locally recently - will get some pictures.
Wayne
-
Hi Wayne,
That would be terrific !
I'm about to start on the bodywork and give her a respray. I'm thinking of putting a MP cage on the back with canopy and bows. Any photos would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Mick

A place where people can upload pics and updather their own sheds for any kind of vehice should be appearing soon!

Hi Tommy,
Any luck finding these pics, I'd be interested in seeing an XY in service

The MPs weren't the only ones that had the cage on the back, our unit had a couple that had bows and canopy, with mesh at the front.... but no gate at the rear, just the tarp. There was provision for seating too, I guess you would get locked up today if you dared carry a passenger back there though.
-
HI All,
Well as some are aware I wasn't in a Land Rover this year at Corowa I was in a XY Falcon ute - actually Mick's ute which I was lucky enough to take off Mick! well actually buy off Mick - and thanks to Mick for having it in great mechanical condition and supplying a Road Worthy certificate when he handed it over to me - can't ask a mate to do any more than that.
I think as it is basically unmolested it should stay that way, yeah it looks a bit scratched up but that's real life, so many XY's are being over restored into GT's, I know the old bloke that originally owned it didn't want this to happen to it and it wont.
I really want to find the ARN and Carzee is onto it, I also really want to see some pics of any XY ute in service, especially a MP ute with cage etc.
More info in this thread as well http://remlr.com/forum/index.php?topic=3015.msg31799#msg31799
Anyway here are some photos from Corowa (sleeping in the swag under the Hootchie worked just fine! :-X Lol)
-
I had a bit of a gander at the ute Scott, I think it's a great pick up. Well done :)

Gee that hoochie looks suspect, was it water proof?
-
Gee that hoochie looks suspect, was it water proof?
the hoochie itself is 100% water proof!

As I remember it fell down quite easily something to do with the hutchie cord.
-
Needs proper pegs like Mick's ones. Can also be used to steady up trees in case of gales.

the cord was OK but operator error on tying the knots - maybe a certain Mk3/Mk4 up grade owner will say different
-
Hmmmm,
I think a retest at Corowa 17 will put the matter to bed :)
Plenty of time to practice Scott. 8)

A slanderous allegation....I must have my honour.
*slap* with large gauntlet.......made of steel and filled with stones.
That hoochie with as much above protection as it had, was really let down by the ingenuity of the owner who insisted in water proofing the base, to the point one of two things happened.
1) he created a pool for himself
2) the theory of putting a sleeping mans hand in water induces certain automatic bladder responses.
Either way the outcome was that FFRMAN wet his bed......there, I've said it. You're a bed wetter.
-

*slap* with large gauntlet.......made of steel and filled with stones.
Running very fast...... Getting smaller..... Over the horizon........ Gone
-
I'm taking the Hootchie set up more seriously next year
-
Ha, you'll get even wetter in a hole like that.
-
Come on Aussie Greg,
A bloke like FFRMAN would have his blow ups up and ready. No chance of drowning with those bad boys.
👍😊
-
Hi All
I have worked out what caused the Bed Wetting episode, it was the cheap nasty beer that Scott was consuming. Next year drink a quality beverage like XXXX. I drink it and I don't have any problems in the area of concern.
Cheers
Rod
-
Nice Scotty, I'll sleep with you..... :o

OK you blokes this is getting way off track (self inflicted), and Rod it was not bed wetting it was the bed getting wet - there is a not to subtle difference
anyway what's wrong with 150 lashes when out field with the guys???? :o
What I really want is a photo of XY Falcon utes in service - gotta be some out there!
this is what I'm bringing next year
-
Or a fine King Valley red?! 8)
-
Thanks to two very helpful members I now have;
1. the ARN for the XY - Thanks Carzee and
2. an in service photo of XY utes with and without a cage on the back, thanks Tommy
The ARN is 180 - 049
XY 71 Ford Ute
ARN book records that chassis against 180-049 plate.
"Ford, Truck Utility 1/4 Ton. CL. w/tc" (with tonneau cover)
disposal 29.3.77
tyres 7.75 x 14

Great news Scott. It looks like there is some HT Holden wagons in the rear of the photo and a Leyland truck in the foreground. Anyone know if any of these survive?
Cheers
Rod
-
that's a 'S' model Bedford, is'n it ?
-
Hi Boys,
Rod I have seen a HT wagon getting around a while back and there was a HQ sedan on the market a few years back. I still regret not grabbing it.
cheers,
Mick
-

That's what it is.
-
There appears to be another Bedford in the background which is interesting as I would have said that the only military Bedfords to grace our shores would have been the ones that went up against the Unimog. they would have been S type or similar I would assume. Always open to correction of course. Do we have a date and location for the photo?
Geoff.
-
OK so the photo is from Tommy, but a crop off a much larger photo, if Tommy can send me the full photo that would be great.
So as per Tommy; taken in 1972 in Singapore.
this one has a little more detail
-
Singapore, that would explain the Bedfords.
Geoff.

Hi Scott
Did you notice the hubcaps they look like the standard XY ones.
Cheers
Rod

Yeah two things. 1 they definitely had hub caps in service 2. I recon mine are XA hub caps. But maybe the Army swapped then during a service one time???

Quick update for those that are interested in vehicles other than Land Rovers.............
Was able to buy an original canopy and frame a few weeks ago and got to fit it this weekend.
I am not aware of any other XY army ute with a canopy, does anyone know of another??
The hoops where basically NOS I just repainted them, the canopy is used but in very sound condition, I will be able to make a new one off this one using it as the template, put the new one on the vehicle and keep the original in safe storage for posterity!
Apparently there was 60 of these made for the 4 x 4 XY, does anyone know the numbers that went into the army of XY with canopy and XY with tonneau covers?
Anyway here's the pics, pic 1 the hoops, pic 2 canopy fitted, pic 3 old school roof racks..........
Enjoy
Scott
-
Well done!

Very good. Is that grass I can see in the background?
Cheers

Wont stop raining now it's started! more rain than all of last year already!
-
Looks flash
-
Looking good Scott,
Now you will be able to get more stuff in next year coming home from Corowa.....
Very nice to see the XY reunited with the canopy.
What is the story with the roof racks?
-
that's a 'S' model Bedford, is'n it ?
I think you'll find its an RL Bedford.
The RL was a 4WD version used primarily by the British Army, the S were a mainly 4X2 etc with lower chassis height used mainly in the civilian market but they did share many design elements in the cab.
-
Does anyone know if/what sort of trailer would have been pulled by the XY Falcon utes?
thanks in advance
Scott
-
As far as I know such vehicles were never used to haul trailers, certainly not in the Vietnam era.
Geoff O.
-
Hi Scott,
I never saw any army Utes/ station wagons with a tow bar back in the XB , XF , era. Same, same with the Commodore, Valiants, Nissan Bluebirds. I reckon if you hooked a trailer up to a Bluebird you wouldn't be going anywhere.
The XY would look smart with a matching trailer - pity 😩
Cheers Mate,
Mick
-
Thanks Mick & Geoff,
The tow bar on it now must have been put on there by the first owner ex Army??, might leave it on though as its handy, but you can't open the spare wheel door unless you take the tongue off first. The gal fittings for the over head roof rack might need to come off though.
cheers
Scott
-
Hey Scott,
I have the racks for those gal pipe fittings if you want them ?
They are there when you want them and come in handy if you have 6m timber lengths etc to transport.
Cheers,
Mick
-
Scott, I know that you should never say never but I doubt that the army ever used that type of tow bar anyway. As to saying something never happened, as soon as you open your big mouth someone will come up with irrefutable proof that it did happen. Been there, done that, didn't like it!
Geoff O.
-
Yeah your probably right Geoff, I'm sure there may have been a RAEME officer running a workshop putting a tow bar on his company car somewhere 😊👍
Cheers,
Mick
-
Mick, A RAEME officer doing an unauthorised mod? Wash out your mouth with scotch, er, soap.

I'd get one of those ex army domestic 6x3 luggage trailers that Manheim auction off from time to time.
Nearly bought one myself a year or so ago.

Does this look like a potential Provosts cage? http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/greta/other-parts-accessories/lamdrover-cage/1129709119
You'd just have to make up a mesh rear door to complete to lock up stage. I think the same canopy you have now would also fit.
