Hi there,

I have a 1971 2a, 2.25 109" WS... With a broken clutch. Does anyone know whether this type of vehicle has a "three fingered" or "many fingered" clutch plate assembly [This is the question from the guy at FWD parts in Rocklea who is getting me the replacement bits... I have no idea what he is asking, all I know is, the mechanic who is fixing it says he won't know till he takes the clutch apart, and he won't take it apart until he gets the parts...] Can you help?

Can you ball park how long it might take? I don't want to be ripped off by a mechanic!

Also, are there any whiz-bang LR enthusiasts/ nuts near Caboolture that would be interested in being paid to repair the clutch? I have been quoted by a mechanic, but would rather a)give the money to a person who is enthused about LR's and b) get some to do it who knows LR's very well (and also wouldn't mind me being their off-sider so I can learn stuff).

Hi have just posted this somewhere else on the forum, am new to it, then saw this spot:

3 finger or multi-finger?

This is the question I am being asked when trying to order a clutch kit for a 1971 109" 2.25 petrol 2A... Any ideas? I don't... Can supply VIN or other details if this helps.

If you do end up needing to take it to a mechanic, MR Automotive at Redcliffe is probably your closest independant Land Rover mechanic. You can also source parts from them (they will post out from memory), so if they need to take the clutch out, will likely have the parts on hand to put it back together again  :)

Huge thanks for the two very swift replies... I know it's a 1971 from the Manufacturers plate.
And now you have mentioned it... yes the guy did ask if it was a 9 or a 9.5 inch... So the long and the short of it is... I won't know til it's off... hmm.
OK... on with the show... Will try the fellows in Redcliffe.

I would second that MR Automotive are very very good indeed.

Whilst we are on the subject of MRA, on a number of occasions lately I have called for spare parts only to be told, either they don't stock them, or there no longer available.

I found this not to be true and sourced the parts from the UK New, in there defence they do very little series stuff now a days.

So all I am saying is if you are stuck for a part here, its not the end of the world theres a good chance you can still get it, its one of the reason i now source series parts as part of my business.

PS

They did get me a clutch for Angus........so 10/10 for that...

If it has a standard 2a clutch, it would be the 9 inch 3 finger/coil spring type, the later diaphragm type as fitted to Series 3's (9.5 inch) requires a spacer not sure that they are still available,as the depth of the bell housing differs from 2a to 3 as does the clutch actuating mechanism.see if you can get a "Dummy Primary Shaft" from somebody  ;) makes lining up the clutch and pressure plate into the spiggot bush much easier.

Hi Stripey

Another way to check the type of clutch is if the floor is removed take the gearlever off the bell housing and with a torch look inside, you can see the type of clutch.
Also if you have the bell housing with the redundant hole in the left side, pop the rubber blank out and look through there.

My 1968 S2A 109 has a diaphragm clutch pressure plate and it is identicle to the S3 i had. Still got both pressure plates, s3 done 26000 k's, if you need a good plate give me a pm.

My 2a  (civvy) which i still have and have the old clutch pressure plate. The only reason for changing it was the gearbox was overhauld. It was always from new a clunky box but now it is OK. While box out in with new clutch.
Will measure up inse different diameter.  I am now curious whether i have an od 2A
