Lot 15 at the AFM Minto October 2014 Auction. Was only looking for a parts car to merge with 49-353, however when Lot#35 was bid up to silly money I decided to bid on a complete car.
48-852 has no log books, but looks to have a relaticely recent engine replacement. Body only average with the RHS outer guard needing replacement and a few odds and ends which will donor from 49-353.
Plan is not to register ATM with occasional UVP until it's eligible for NSW HCRS. (2018)

Not sure of unit history, however in the LHS sign holder was a coloured Artillery tac with unit serial 48 and in the door a coloured 1 Div formation sign.
48 and 1 Div are also the Low Vis painted markings on the sign holders.
Unuaually there are three sign holders, two in the normal positions below the head lamps and a third on the LHS on the front of the bumper bar. My first thoughts were RAEME artificers, but the FFR obviously having been fitted with radios I'm wondering about an attached sigs squad. Any thoughts?
Also, does anyone know the purpose of the row of bracket/clamps near the front of the tub and on the storage bin seat?
-
Is that a carrier pidgeon stencil on the lower rear corner of the LHS door.?
-
Maybe its a sky rat! :o
There is an arty coloured tac sign with unit serial 48 and a I Div coloured formation sign, same as the painted low-vis signs on the vehicle.
According to the 1982 VUS unit serial 48 is 8/12 Medium Regiment 1 Division.
Does anyone have later VUS? or more recent identity for serial 48?
Any dropshorts who served with 8/12 MED Regt?
-
Hi Diana,
According to my info the tac sign is still 48 and the ERN ( no. Above Christmas tree) is 5407.

Thanks Mick
any idea about the bird logo device?
-
If it wasn't a 8/12 vehicle I'd have said it was a 16 Avn Regt car but being from 8/12 it might have been the Battery supporting 3RAR when it was a Para Bn.
I'll follow it up and get back to you.
Cheers Diana.

Easo (currently posted up in Darwin) tells me that the bird logo is an old device used by 8/12 Regimental HQ but hasn't any more info.
More information would be great.
-
Today I pulled the radio 4 batteries out of the boxes and started trying to recover them.
Also threw on a hood I picked up from Scottish John a few years ago. Makes it look a lit more complete.

Only problem is that the two straps on the windscreen end are missing. :'(
Also took a closer look at the bird device, it has broad slotted wing shape and feathered legs so reminiscent of a raptor rather than a gull or similar.

Pretty sure the feather / wing ends design is more to do with the spray pattern / ease of cutting the stencil negative vs actual bird anatomy?
The feathered feet also look overspray'y
Just my opinion of course :-)
-
There is overspray no doubt, and having studied zoology in my science degree doing bird population studies I've had a little experience in identification and in spite of the issues of the stencils etc, IMHO the wing shape, particularly with the separated feathers at the tips, is either a passive soaring type (hawke, storks, eagles) or elliptic, (crows and raven) and not either of the active soaring (gulls, albatross) or high speed (terns, ducks, swifts) and IMHO there are greater similarities to raptors than there are to the crows and much less similarity to gulls etc.
The fanning of the tail doesn't look like a wedge tail to me so I'm thinking sea eagle or hawk, or possibly, maybe, crow but crows don't have much feathering on their legs..

I think you are being far too generous in your evaluation of the average diggers attention to detail.
:)
IMO of course
-
That's definitely a raptor, they've put the effort in to make it look like one. Maybe it's a Whistling Kite:

Seems appropriate for a radio vehicle somehow.
-
Thank Dervish, I know its not that important, but without the log books identifying the logo accurately may go a little way to identifying the squad it belonged to.
Easo suggested it was an old 8/12 HQ symbol. Having three tac holders on the front would that make it possible for an 8/12 Mdm Regt HQ Sigs squad or even a 8/12 HQ RAEME squad?
-
Army Aviation??
http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-army-today/rar-sasr/army-aviation.htm
-
With the 48 and 1 div tac sign its defiantly 8/12 but an FFR could belong a forward observer they have changed the regt make up recently so don't know who they come under in the unit :D
-
Hi all,
As I said earlier, I reckon it's 16 Aviation Regiment. How they operate within the Division I don't know. They might have a liaison offer with 8/12 ?
Mick
-
From Dianas 2nd post the coloured arty tac was still in the holder how many units leave other units tac signs when they take over a vehicle not many I know of ;)
-
That's true. But the art of stencilling other units vehicles with your Own unit stencil may still be well and truly alive and kicking.

My guess is that it is an Eagle for the reasons diana stated. I think some may understate the artisitic ability of some diggers.
My Guess: ISTAR. IIRC, STAR developed from the Arty FO role. Seems to fit.
Guess what UAV they operated? Scan Eagle.
http://www.army.gov.au/Our-work/News-and-media/News-and-media-2012/News-and-media-May-2012/ScanEagles-final-flight
I know someone in 20STA. Will make some enquiries (if they are contactable).
PS, The atypical brackets and bolt holes are consistent with the fitment (and removal) of AMSTAR Ground Surveillance radar. Further indication of employmetn within the ISTAR world.
Check and see if there are additional seat mounting holes in the LR area of the tub and indication of a ~40x40mm square leg resting 150 forward of the rear and just inboard of the RH galv load protection strip.
-
That sounds pretty close then the vehicle would most likely come from 132 UAV battery.
-

you must know a different bunch of diggers to me :)
-
just to remind people the serial 48 is on both a removable coloured Arty tac and also painted in the front and rear holders. The only unit I can find for 48 is 8/12 but the latest reference is 1982. I have nothing to say the serial 48 hasn't been allocated to another unit more recently.
Thanks Dave for your information. When you speak of a radar unit mounted in the rear, are you saying that a radar unit may have been mounted in the rear? Would the antenna array have been removable and ground mounted or operate through the roof of the vehicle? (That may explain the absence of the cam net rack +/- tarp)
-
Going back too the stencils, the one on the other side has the same details as the one shown earlier. Although mirrored so the bird is in forward flight on both sides.

Diana, the AMSTAR unit is man portable. The VM is simply for carrriage and operation in comfort. The Antenna is tripod mounted and set a distance from the vehicle. Strangely, the VM kit included a different operator seat to the std FFR rear seating.
Piccies here:

I don't know if you have to have a login however all I get is the Land 53 Project NINOX Phase 1E project overview page.

That's the right page it has a pic in the middle with the parts of the radar set up :)

Very small graphics including the old Bendix Technica 24V charging sets, I thought I was looking for the setup in a Perentie
-
Diana, the GSR VM kit is equivalent to a Raven rack. Secure storage for the Array, Tripod, Cable reels, manpack harness, Signal processing unit and external power supply.
-
Hi Dave
Not fully cognoscente of the layout etc of the Raven equipment and racking but I assume its one of the box frames I've been asking about.
Took a few piccies after fiddling and repairing, will get to the various bolt hole identification later. First the vehicle late this afternoon after I fitted a FFR tarp.

First I had to replace the damaged rivnuts in the ROPS and rear bar then started sorting out what fits where. II found that the tables don't fit between the dicky seats and the distribution box and you can't fit two tables on the RHS because of a 40mm RHS inside the tub at the front.

Des anyone know what these brackets are for? (or piccies of them in use) They are in both 48-852 and 49-353
(http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m2/Auntikinus/Army%20Land%20Rovers/Perentie%20FFR%2048-852/9c59656b-171e-4959-acfb-e18598938cc1.jpg)
-
Not sure what they are for, but my FFR only has one, on the passenger side. Right pain in the posterior to remove, after a rivnut or two started spinning...
-
Apparently they are 25mm spacer tubes for the Raven radio rack when the ROP bars were installed. Given that I have neither the Raven radios or the racks ATM I'm going to remove them, at least from the RHS so I can fit a pair of tables.
-

They're mounted to the body by large self tappers, and used to mount the Raven radio stacks via M8 bolts/rivnuts and the spring mounted 'L' shaped brackets at the base.
-
48-852 has been receiving a few parts from 49-353 over the last week.
The broken plastic grill, rear convoy lamp and NATO plug cover have been donated last week, today the RHS front outer guard came off in preparation for going on later, but it's such a shame to destroy the 16AD logo however. :'(
I'm going to salvage the Steyr barrel clip for a broken one and one of the missing Raven frame clamps over the weekend. It may sound like sacrilege but a few components are migrating from 49-353 to Ikea my coil sprung 110 6X6 to complete the V8->4BD1 conversion.
Not to worry, 49-353 will be reborn after a full nut and bolt resto by another enthusiast.

eek!

diana spoke to freind of mine the insignia could be that of 1brigade ie eagle nt
-
hq battery 8/12
-
48 964 also spent time at 8/12 medium battery
-
according to 8/12 mdm regt historian the eagle was painted on the rhq vehicles as they were ffr
-
48-852 gone to new owner in December. Replaced by 50-422 FFR with winch 51 FNQR
-
Very nice condition Diana.
