ok. so. i went to take my perentie for a quick run down to coles the other night and the wiring caught fire!
im not too sure what caused this, as it was behind the 2 gauges in the centre of the dash (the hour and ammeter for the generator if im correct) everything now seems to be working except my headlights. but i was looking at rewiring 49-191 anyway and upgrade the headlights while im at it. having never rewired a vehicle before should i seek help or is this easy ? and how much am i looking at spending ?
cheers,
Lachlan

i almost encountered a similar problem, when changing ignition barrel.. and it appears to me that either the army or lra do not believe in fuses.
-
I hate to say it, but if you have to ask - you'll probably need help.
If you do decide to give it a go, I'll lend a hand when I can.

It is a pommy design thing have a look at series vehicles they worse

one of the many wires probably rubbed through or shorted out via the black out switch. Good luck with the Prince of Darkness 8-)

thanks dervish for the offer, if i need the help ill be sure to contact you.

Ammeter and hours? Only ones on my dash are fuel, volts and temp, excepting my half dark speedo.

His in an FFR ;)

Ah, that would explain it! Thought it was a mod mine never got!

So I'm not the only one with a half dark speedo then lol.

yeah, im in a survey model to be exact. and shes on the road again. havent had the time to play around with the wiring. but i replaced the headlight switch and everything seems to be working fine. i think ill slowly bit by bit get around to redoing the wiring. but for now its not urgent

I wish mine was half dark again, now its fully dark haha. Its on the ever increasing 'to-do' list

Seems to be a common issue. Speedo has 2 backlight globes. On mine the top globe housing is damaged and the globe falls out. Tried securing with electrical tape. Lasted about 2 weeks.
Next time I'm trying hot glue.
Avoiding the temptation of stronger adhesive, as the globe will surely blow if I fix it in permanently.
(Murphy and I go way back).

Theres nothing left in the top mount on mine, and the bottom was hot glued in
Funny thing about hot glue, and hot incandescent lights..
you may get 3 weeks, which, while its a 50% improvement... unless you replace with cooler running LED globes?

You can get LED's that fit in the tin housing, mates got some for his Mazda

I've noticed that the dash lights are on continuously with the ignition. I guess that heats up the plastic light cover (blue) in the rear of the speedo. I use the dimmer switch to turn them off during the day.

A different problem, most probably a dash wiring malfunction:
Variant: 1990 4x4 FFR.
Problem/symptom: the three clocks to the right of the Speedo clock/odometer combo (i.e., fuel gauge, engine coolant temp, battery voltage) worked for a second or two when starting the engine... but then:
1. all three clocks' needles fell to the left as the gauges stopped working - they just lost power, they died, they kicked the bucket and started 'pining for the fjords'..
2. the square red "low oil" warning light comes on in the colourful array of idiot lights under the gauges (the lights you can minimise with the little tin lid). It looked exactly like the handbrake light. When I noticed it as I was driving I thought this was a broken fanbelt.
3. a square orange warning light comes on with the symbol of a carby butterfly throttle (i think its that). Because the headlights and wipers were on this is warning array is looking like a lovely Xmas Tree collection. In the Defender handbook this orange warning light is logically "number 18" but has no function or meaning apparently. But its orange and at least I know that bulb works.
4. i checked the oil on the dipstick: its on the lower dot...
5. The next morning drained the oil, changed filter, added the fresh oil and then restarted the engine.
6. The red "low oil" warning light did not reappear. Its off. The mystery orange warning light did not re-appear. Its off. All the gauges worked correctly and stayed working. No more problems. An oil change fixed the electrics LOL.
I think I have a dash wiring fault. The wire that powers the "low oil" warning bulb is probably touching/powering the mystery orange bulb as well.

Could be a dodgy earth.
The current may be pathing back through your number 18 to ground.

:-\ THAT PRINCE OF DARKNESS,He gets into every thing aye, mine same prob, found top globe hanging out of the holder the plastic holder burnt, cleaned /checked both globes and super glued them in ,still going ,look for loose earth leads going from gauges to earth bolt ,these are generally loose, like b52 says they stay on as long as the ignition switch is on A.D.F. have got some queer ideas, turning the dimmer switch down may help or rewire them indepently.TONA.
