Title: Were there any Aussie Army SIII Stage 1
Post by: Diana Alan on June 21, 2012, 08:56:16 PM
Just read the title of the forum and wondered if the Oz Army ever had Stage 1 or was it only the Kiwi's and RAN?

None that I am aware of, but then strange things happened around the place.

I am sure the stage 1 was possibly used by JRA as part of the Perentie development.  I was also told that the army used 2x series 3 vehicles as part of their development, but I've never seen anything to confirm that.

So Just NZ and the RAN.

I'm not 100% but I went to buy a stage one at ormeo near the gold coast. The owner told me it was ex army running gear. It had an isuzu with a series gearbox and transfer. His son worked in the green machine and acquired the pieces was his story anyway. It did look like a very factory setup with no conversion plates etc.

If it had a series gearbox/transfer then it was not a stage 1 let alone army - all stage 1s had the LT95 gearbox/tfr combo.

110 gear under a stage 1 maybe?

The army did not have, or trial, any Stage 1's to our knowledge, but, the navy did have some.

we had both Isuzu and rover powered Stage 1's in Darwin (HMAS Coonawarra) in the early 80's. Never saw any green ones.

I'd never heard of it but this thing had a very professional looking bell housing ( No plates or welds. )and the owner said all the bits were from the military, thought it was army but could have been anything. His son got them from the rack before they were sold off he said. But I never bought it when I seen the series gearbox. They weren't that good with a rover motor so I wasn't interested with an isuzu. My mate I rang to ask about it when I saw it wanted me to buy it just so he could have a look, he used to be a mechanic in the army.
