Went to the Esk show on the weekend simply to hold up the Flag for the real side of things.

whereas a couple of weeks earlier, the day before Anzac Day I displayed him at the Bald Hills State School Anzac Day service;

and the day after, I drove Onslow in the Brisbane Anzac Day parade;

and whilst all this was happening Daisy was on display at the Southbank Anzac display for a wholeweek:

Apart from events such as these, I don't really have to do much to either of them, just enjoy them.

Today I took Daisy out on a Jeep Club outing. Good weather and a good turn up of vehicles. About 12-13 Jeeps (mixture of Ford and Willys) a couple of Studebakers, a C15 Blitz, an Austin Champ, my Rover, a Chev staff car, a couple of motor cycles and an assortment of plastic.
A good day weather wise and outing wise, departing the southern suburbs of Brisbane around 0830 and travelling via a scenic route through the local sugar cane farms around the Jacob's Well area to Pimpama where a heritage village is situated. We went to visit a display that is located in this area, namely the WWll Army Hospital ship Krawarree, a Huon Pine hulled vessel that was commissioned by the Australian Army during WWll to be used as a "sea Ambulance" ferrying wounded from shore to Hospital ships off shore.
En route we called in to a very interesting site in the Underwood are for a bit of a talk on "days gone by".

That's a mighty fine vehicle you have there ZD. What type of rego plate is that ?

It's great seeing some of the other shorties going around.

Cheers,

Mick

The rego plate is a Qld "Special Interest" plate, the equivalent of an "historic" plate in some other states. Limited to club usage and other minor restrictions.

Aust vehicles in Vietnam had a red Kangaroo put on them, usually the door (the Gunbuggy doesn't have dors so it's on the front guard). Maybe so the Yanks new they weren't the enemy!

mine was based in Nui Dat and the camel represents 26 TSP as does the 26 over 522 yellow/blue TAC plate

Red rats as they are affectionately occur, can appear in the darndest places when grunts and RAAFies are bored!  I have heard of them appearing inside wheel wells on apparently well guarded USAF aircraft upon return to the US after stints in Australia.

But yes, generally used on Aus vehicles OS.

Took my 2A Shorty a Vietnam Vet to the Vietnam Vets service last Sunday (17th) Were it took pride of place.

Most people where in the tent that you can't see in the photo as there was a really cold wind, about 100 attended.

Photo on the trailer back to Ballarat, then parked next to the cenotaph, and a long short to get perspective.

Hope you like

Hi boys,

I fitted a Weber 34 ICH carburettor and Bosch electronic ignition to 2A shorty. She runs a treat. I know it may not be to the purists liking but you can't please them all.

Looking forward to the trip to Dookie on the weekend, hope to see a few of you blokes there.

Iphones and older pc OS's (like XP) have a tendency to interpret the bottom edge of photo differently. I bet the pic displays on the phone correctly..?

The past week or so have been pretty hectic for poor old Daisy the 2a 6005, in that last weekend she spent the whole weekend running around with some of her older and younger military relations at the MJCQ swap meet, but to day she has been busy driving round and round in circles with loads of delighted kids on board.
The SE Brisbane Rotary club held its 67th annual "Special Children's Picnic" at Wellington Park, and this year supposedly surpassed last years efforts where approximately 500 students and staff attended.
This is a pretty special day, a day that these kids look forward to all year, thoroughly enjoy, and apparently talk about for weeks, a chance to get out and do something different to brighten their lives somewhat.
Police, ambulance and fire services all attend offering the kids a chance to not only see these vehicles (and if you can remember back to when you were a kid, these were pretty wondrous things) , clamber all over them, ride in them , play with sirens and so on.
The Military Jeep Club of Qld (MJCQ) was also invited to supply a couple of vehicles for this purpose as well and on the day a Studebaker US6, two Jeeps and Daisy the Land Rover took up the challenge, and what a great day it was.
Besides the great feeling of being able to offer these little kids some little bit of excitement to their lives, we were also shouted ice creams, cakes and fruit by the Rotary club, cut sandwiches from the Childrens Hospital, and in general had a great day.
Perhaps a little boring driving wise as we went round and round the figure 8 circumnavigation of the car park quite a number of times and all in first gear, but the screams and giggles of excitement made it all worthwhile.

Worked in a very cramped space today in an effort to find the cause of this mess
 (http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/DJM110084/IMG_4037_zpsqnhwxqwf.jpg)
back tracking a few weeks, this Land Rover failed on Anzac day (25th April), it had been fitted with a new carburetor, it ran fine for approx. 3 k's then suddenly stopped, so it was parked up with some effort and left until I had either the time or inclination to look at it.
Yesterday I removed the carburetor only to find that I took it apart it had a quantity of fine red dirt/sand/grit/rubbish in the float bowl, not a good sign at all, so it was stripped right down, blown out with air, then re-assembled.
This morning I removed the fuel bowl, which as you saw t'was full of *&%^$, so the next item was remove some of the fittings from the seat box base to gain access to the top of the fuel tank, remove 6 screws that hold the fuel gauge sender, peer in with a torch, YUK what a mess.
The only cure for it was to remove the tank, but it is in a very tight spot with not much room to move about in
(http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/DJM110084/IMG_4040_zpsmjnizidi.jpg)
it didn't take long to remove the tank after I had drained approx. 3 lt's fuel out, it stank to high heaven gave me a headache and made me feel nauseated (phew++++++) anyway pushing on as you have to, because if you don't do it who will.
Out with my 'Stihl' pressure washer, giving the insides of the tank a *&%^$ good wash, an awful lot of discoloured *&%^$ came out through the bung in the bottom of the tank, I think I have got rid of most of it, at the moment the tank is upside down draining
hopefully it will be sunny over the next few days and it dries out, then off to the Central coast to buy some 'Red Kote' to seal the base n sides of the tank, anyway that's been part of my day, cheers Dennis   :)

Good job that had to be done as you say.

Is it dirt accumulated muck from petrol bowsers (40+ years worth) or did Gladys possibly get sabotaged by a handful of dirt?
Title: Re: What I did today in my Series 2A

No sabotage, it's just what happens to fuel tanks when the vehicle sits for long periods of time with a limited amount of fuel in them, methinks it's about time to sell some of them off to people who would use them regularly,  :( cheers Dennis  :(

Don't sell  :(

Try this type of stuff one of many brands out there. http://www.goldeagle.com.au/fuel_stabiliser.html but keep the tank as full as it can be, keep the air out.

I have been playing with this vehicle for a number of weeks as time permitted, it has had the fuel tank out n cleaned, then a coat of 'Red-Kote' applied, that has been allowed to dry for a week, yesterday after work I re-fitted the tank and finished the job off this morning.
Before I started the engine I removed the carburetor and blew it out, it's now squeeky clean
(http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/DJM110085/IMG_4048_zpsczhm5jhc.jpg)
with that job completed, clean fuel with an additive was added to the fuel tank, hand primer pushed into action, turn the key and away it went
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qGBwNb1rpQ&feature=youtu.be
anyway maybe tomorrow I will get something done on my Series 1, cheers Dennis :) ;)

Philthy I have been using Sta-Bil for a number of years now, I also use lead additive + 125mls of auto/transmission oil per 20 lts of petrol, I just can't afford to keep 10 Land Rovers full of fuel all the time,.  :-[ :( :(

My gunbuggy has developed an issue, it will not idle unless the choke is out partially, I need to know which is the slow running/idle jet, can anyone tell me which part it is from this diagram
(http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/IMG_2113_zpsdfcb8ebd.jpg)
the parts book mentions neither slow running or idle jet so I'm at a loss before I start, cheers Dennis

Well, this morning I made good on my word to strip the carburetor off the engine, I took it down to it's basic bits
(http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/DJM110087/IMG_4059_zpszm196ewc.jpg)
and yes then it started to sprinkle rain as you would expect, anyway I pressed on using the carby cleaner in a pressure pack
then blew it all out with compressed air, re-assembled it and refitted it back on the vehicle
(http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/DJM110/DJM110087/IMG_4058_zps63wgk8ih.jpg)
primed the system hand and added a splash down the throat and it came to life, it is idling a tad fast with the choke out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a5D-A-h_nQ&feature=youtu.be
but after it warmed it and the choke in, it does idle, yippee, now just need to be able to get it out and take it for a drive cheers Dennis  ;)

Is that not just the mixture screw? I will admit I'm a d*** s***, but I can follow instructions from a book, and to my way of thinking a screw ain't a jet, but again you could be correct LOL cheers Dennis  ;)

You are correct. The screw meters the amount of air fuel mixture on idle.

Your best friend here is a vacuum gauge plug it in the brake vacuum hose. Mess with the screw until you get the highest vacuum on the gauge.
This is after the engine spark timing is correct.

Ok if you don’t have a vacuum gauge. Another very old school way of setting the idle mixture is start with the screw turned in all the way. Now back it out three and a half turns. Start the engine. Set the idle speed (looks like 9# and 10# in the drawing until your idle speed is stable. (look at the engine and you want it tick over as smooth as possible set it at this stage by the idle speed, it may idle a bit high at this stage but that’s ok.

With the engine idling away and warm have the filter off the carburettor. Use a playing card is perfect or simular progressively slide the card flat over the hole in the carb. In a perfect word you should get just past ¾ covered before the engine idle speed falls.

If it gets faster and faster as you slide the card over the mixture is the mixture is too lean so turn the idle mixture screw in.

As you get better and closer to the correct point the idle speed will get faster so as you get there correct the idle speed each time. If you don’t the carb sucks more air than at idle and will start drawing fuel from the next jet up from idle.

But  I think get a timing gauge, a hand held tachometer, and a vacuum gauge and it will be a cake walk.

PM me if you need help or youtube is you friend.
Cheers Phil

I reread your question looking at the diagram.

The air/fuel mixture works like this in this diagram

#17 is a brass or bronze metered little tube that restricts the amount of fuel through it.

#16 is just a plug that holds it together.

#14 is the screw that meters the amount of air through that is being sucked down by the piston. The air getting past the screw tip is bypassing the main throttle body because the butterfly is closed. It’s pointed to provide the best aerodynamics to mix and get the best air fuel atomization.

#15 is just a spring that holds it in tension at the set amount.

The fuel amount is set by the size #17 (and if you want to split hairs the fuel bowl height) the air is the only adjustable item.

The amount of air speed is critical and is influenced by idle speed and the amount of compression the engine and valve/cam shaft timing to draw both the air and fuel mixture down.

Oh and another reason your engine struggles to idle but improves when the choke is on is that there could be a leak in the intake system somewhere. Check vacuum lines and all gasket mating surfaces with a spray of start-ya- B#$@!^ or brake cleaner or even fly spray with the engine idling.

If there is a leak the where you spray the engine RPM will go up.

You are compensating a lean mixture by having to use the choke.

Good luck Phil

I reversed it out of the shed and found where the solex was leaking fuel. I have had quite a few fuel leaks but i think I have fixed them all now. I also sat in it and pondered for a while.
Cheers

Lol

I might sit in mine on the weekend and ponder about part numbers!

Turned my CR into a civvy with an exmoor trim canopy ( been reading classic Land Rover mag too much!) but easily converted back to a CR.

Looking forward to when our prices here catch up with the UK!

Finished installing an Accuspark electronic ignition on my 2A FFT. Started a bit over a week ago and had it done in a couple of hours. However i could hear a ticking noise which was the rotor hitting the sensor. Turned out the rotor was not the original and today I put the correct one in - it all worked fine. Set  timing, checked the idle revs and checked combustion analysis. According to that the performance had improved.

When i had problems with the rotor i got great support from Steve at robroyhistoricgarage.com.au.

Took it for a test drive and all went well. No more points to worry about!

Gunna make me one of those signs, I've got some 3mm checker plate that I used to shoot in a .223, it's got some tight groupings through it - might use that, should look pretty cool

cheers

Hi all,

Scott, the bullet riddled signs will look pretty cool given your vehicles are veterans , my shortie hasn't seen active service so a bullet hole in the sign could only have been an unauthorised discharge.

Thanks for the complement Mike. Yes they aren't too bad.

That Inter Mick was the one that looked pretty good when he picked her up and he has spent another 10k to get it road worthy.  He just replaced the timber seating so she looks as good inside as out. When you climb in her you'd think you were just picking it up from the vehicle pool. The cabin interior is perfect - new steering wheel really sets her off . She really is a great truck and the bloke has another one just coming out of a rebuild.

Cheers,

Mick
