Title: White Land Rover - Vietnam
Post by: Tommy on September 15, 2013, 10:33:12 PM
The following photo shows a white Land Rover sitting in 2nd Advanced Ordnance Depot, Vung Tau, SVN. It shows the whole vehicle painted white. Not sure if it is a hardtop or white painted canopy. The only white Land Rover I know of that went to Vietnam is the one shown in the second photo (taken on HMAS Sydney).

Also of interest is the Leyland/Scammell Contractor sitting to the rear of the white Land Rover. It has the white roof. If you look to the far right there also appears to be two International F1 post hole diggers sitting side by side. I had believed that there was only one of these purpose built vehicles in SVN.

Could it be a UN rover? Salvos? Perhaps needing repairs in country, the only place to get parts was us aussies?

G'day Minikeg

I would rule out the Salvos Land Rover as they were painted a blue grey with white hardtop as shown below. Not sure what involvement the United Nations had in SVN. Maybe some here will know more.

Is it white or the sky blue colour Navy Landies were painted at the time?  I see the Holdens are the same colour.

G'day gary

This photo shows a Holden HG/HK/HT? in SVN. It looks white. Could be one of the wagons seen on the deck of the Sydney. Not sure if there were any navy blue Holdens around at the time.

The Navy's sky blue can look white in Black and White pics - Navy certainly had "Belmonts" in the sky blue colour at that time - certainly at homeland bases.

But do have to agree that they certainly look whiter than sky blue.  The Navy vehicles also had white roofs so that "tone" difference should be detectable even in black and white.

If the landies and the holdens are white then they may well be Department of Supply (Admin Services) for none military Aust Government services being provided to support the military effort.

I'm wondering if the one on the VTF is one of the late SIIa six cylinders (suffix e 1969) which were sandstone, a light creamy yellow colour which would appear white in monochrome prints.  The Holdens seem to be HT (1969-1970) so that would be the correct time period.

The one in the yard is certainly different, being a mil. spec SIIa with cut mudguards.

On the Inter drill rigs.  There is one in the SME and I believe it is a Vet, so likely one of those two.

Could be Red Cross or another of the charity organisations in SVN whose vehicles were hitching a lift?

I now have a better photo of the white Land Rover that is seen on the deck of the Sydney. It has the same truck cab but the canvas and hoops have been removed. The Land Rovers colour appears to be more of an off white. I cannot ID the number plates so someone on here may be able to help out. I cannot be certain that this is the same Land Rover sitting in the 2nd Advanced Ordnance Depot. If it is, it must have had it's canvas painted the same colour.

Hi Tommy,

Does the one at 2nd Advanced Ordnance Depot have something on the d/s door? A Red Cross maybe? There appears to be a black dot on the door (too big for the door handle recess)

I will have a closer look at the original image and see what can be seen.

The White Land Rover in the lineup (post#8) of olive drab Land Rovers look rather ghostly don't you think.

Yes, it even looks brighter than the Kombi roofs. Maybe just an aberration or image deterioration.

Could this be the mysterious white Land Rover? It has no side windows as per the photos in posts #1 & 8. Photograph was taken on board HMAS Sydney. Vehicle heading back to Australia (1972).

Did anyone notice the white tray interior on what appears to be an otherwise olive drab topless vehicle near the white landy (maybe its albino)

is that a seat inside the tray?? would that be an FFR or similar painted white inside to improve visability inside??

I think it is a white tub on the inside. They left the hoops on it... what is it?

Also, these civvy LR are those seen in Mud n Dust, the photos are via AWM;
