This question just came up....
.... so I made a quick graphic (its supposedly worth a thousand words).
[ Its a Series 2A 88in Land-Rover chassis photo nicked from the Dennis' Shed (aka Dennis' Depot) ]

One must remember that the rear LHS location only applies to Australian assembled Land Rovers from Series II onwards ending at the Stage 1 SIII.
Earlier vehicles will be in various other locations and UK assembled vehicles from 1958 Series II onwards, including the 101's and lightweights, will be on the RHS front spring hanger bracket.

The 110 (perentie) and subsequent vehicles will all be front RHS chassis rail, near the dumb iron.

this might be of interest, Left hand side refers to sitting in the drivers seat looking forward.
Most 80" Land Rovers in Australia have there chassis number in the same location, On the L/H chassis engine mount, This refers to 1948-53 models
There are a few in OZ with it in other spots, but these are scarce, between Hilton and I we have had about 200 80"s pass through our hands, 99% of these have been in this location.

Most series 1 Land Rovers from 1954-58, 86",88",107" and 109" had there chassis numbers in the same location as the series 2,2A etc, which was on the L/H rear spring hanger,
This is a 1955 86".

The few that Justin is referring to are the vehicles assembled at Annand and Thompson in Brisbane. The practice started after 1951 and continued into the 86" models. These vehicles will have the number stamped on the top of the LHS chassis rail between the engine mount and the front cross member.
It seems to be originally related to a change in the size of the number punch, although in the 86" models they were back to uning a small sized punch in the same position.

However, there were quite a few QLD assembled vehicles that were stamped on top of the chassis L/H side front, there are quite a few of these around.

And then the series 2,2A and most series 3,s had it on the left hand rear spring hanger as well, later ones went to areas as Diana has posted already.

South African built vehicles, especially SIIB forward control, will have the chassis number on the LHS front spring hanger bracket.
