Sad to hear, but it looks like AWOL Adventures has gone into voluntary administration

As you write - sad to see
A bit of gear for sale perhaps ?
-
Some nice bits of kit there, pity with the money they invested :(
-
That's two enterprises that have tried and failed with this type of venture. I think the other was in SA ?
Pete
-
Yeah, sounds a good idea but not a big market for this type of thing. Sad to see so much money and hope invested without the necessary research.
Howard
-
They kept the prices high.
I guess there will be no more TR from murwillumbah as the highest bidder on grays online
-
a big sale coming up
-
how many vehicles did he have?
-
Doomed from the start, but at least they gave it a try. Dave did some work for them so will know what they have I thought around 40 ish, Suppose it depends if theres shareholders in the venture who want to get back some capital. Or TR might want to keep the lot for himself.
-
Hmmmmm, good for those looking to buy, maybe not so good for others looking to sell or want to keep value in what they already have.
-
That is very sad to see :(
-
That is very sad to see :(
Why ?
-
That is very sad to see :(
Why ?
In Australia juddy, we get disappointed when business ventures, such as Tom Rayner's, fail.
If your parts business fails we will be disappointed in part because each such failure is a loss to our wider community and any employees.
I have never met Tom, but from all reports he is one of the "good" guys.
😊
-
Exactly, why should I not be sad to see somebody's business venture fail. I've been there and had to close a business down (did not go to administration) and it is a very sad thing to be a part of, especially when so much time, money and effort have been sunk into it.
-
I'm sorry to see AWOL close too.
It seems to be a fact of life that many people have a vision of what they want to do, and the business they want to run, but in their enthusiasm to do what they want to do, they don't necessarily cross all the T's and dot all the I's.
I'm not saying this is the problem in this case.
In the enthusiasm to open the business, they might not necessarily have the capital to start AND CONTINUE TO RUN the business, or other unforseen problems occur.
Whilst I know I love to drive my Perentie, they are certainly a niche product. Not everyone want to drive a noisy, unairconditioned, leaky truck! Maybe backpackers think it's great, but I'd suspect the market for the product is very narrow and that means difficulty in getting cash flow to maintain the business.
If he had a fleet of over 40 Perenties, that is a lot of money in plant alone. We all know they never break down (!) so there are costs there, plus staff, plus how was it marketed? I find backpackers "difficult" customers as they want their product cheap. I'm assuming this is part of their marketing mix looking at the website for hiring the vehicles.
Perhaps supplying movie props would have been an option, I don't know, but the whole concept of what they were trying to do does not seem to be "mass market", rather "niche market". To me, unfortunately, niche market also means small market, although if you can get it right, niche market can mean good profits, but it does have to be the right niche market.
-
I did not mean any offence by my comment of WHY, and I apologies if that is how it appeared, losing your lively hood is sad and I do wish Tom and any of his employees and any future ventures all the best for the future.
I was though not entirely surprised that this enterprise did not do as well as was obviously anticipated and my comment of WHY was purely a reflection of my lack of surprise. Again I did not mean any personnel offence.
-
Thanks Justin 😊

Before anyone gets carried away with counting corpses, AWOL isn't yet a done thing. It is voluntary, not bankruptcy or receivership. There are a few things in the works as I understand it.
Tom is one of the good guys. I have personally seen the time and money spent making the vehicles viable as commercial hire vehicles with minimal irreversible mods. Remember that many of his future clients will probably join our ranks after sampling the noisy, dusty beautiful beasts.
All the best to Tom and his dedicated crew, I hope for you and your families sake that the effort hasn't been in vain.
Not a paid comment, I am not am awol employee.
-
True, but it is the creditors who now decide the future of the company so it depends on how they think they have the best chance of recovering the money owed them. Generally shareholders lose their investment when this happens so it never augurs well for the business.

I have this to add to the discussion from Tom's partner at AWOL Adventures.
I am very sad to say that yes AWOL has been forced into voluntary administration. This was something that we did not foresee for AWOL as the future was looking VERY bright with lots of wonderful exciting events on the horizon.
Unfortunately Tom Rayner, founder of AWOL, has hit hard times in his civil engineering firm and he was funding the start up of AWOL. His company is owed large amounts of money from outstanding creditors and hence the flow on effect of that cash flow crisis has effected AWOL. It is literally dragging AWOL down with the ship and right when AWOL was just starting to take off.
We are all devastated and madly scrambling to find an investor that may be able to provide a cash injection to separate AWOL from Tom. If you know of anyone with a passion for Perenties, hahaha ;-) who might be interested in entering the world of tourism, certainly pass on my details. We have about 5 days left to find someone!
The business is amazing, we have a fantastic marketing plan, solid business plan, financial forecasts that show a bright future, a fantastic tourism Business Development Officer who is so passionate and well connected and has provided amazing opportunities in the short time she has been on board and we have Tom Rayner - a man with an amazing vision, charisma and drive to take on the world with AWOL, quite literally! It’s heartbreaking to see his dream lost.
All the best to you and certainly do let me know if you have any contacts who may be interested ;-)

Thanks for the clarification.
A good example of things that may appear differently to what they are. If I win Powerball Thursday, I'm investing.

I understand entrepreneurial risk, but is that a sound business model ? One business relying on another business' cash flow in order to operate ?
I wouldn't do it. In my mind it places both at risk.
I do hope it gets sorted though. Best of luck :)

Almost every business Ive worked for (except the current) has had other business's keeping it afloat, and vice versa when cash flow swaps around. Granted its only 5 out of 6.. but to me its very common.

Sadly the Administrators did not give AWOL enough time to secure a deal with interested investors.
I'd love to see some of this stuff go out to you guys.

Gah this makes me mad to see!!! >:( I wish they would put the Windows back in the GS's and roll the sides down! They have shown very little care :'( We had all the windows out for a big event a few days before they shut us down. They initially took the vehicles and left the Windows behind until we jumped up n down about it. They are all paired together and labelled for their corresponding vehicles. I do hope they get reunited.
All the AWOL vehicles have been well loved with a team of great mechanics attending to them. Don't listen to eyes I think he has ulterior motives hehe ;) ;)
Most modifications are cosmetic only. You'll find good radios in some and also fire extinguishers too. A big centre console was designed and added, easily bolts out but makes a great esky with the addition of a bag of ice ;)
There have been 16 FFR AND RFSV's converted to campers with flyscreen enclosure, hydraulic lift bed platform with storage underneath - these are awesome and some still have all the camping gear in them! :-\
Yes there are 2 SRV's . Esperance Elle 203004 is the better of the 2 (not just because she's named after me ;D )
Most are in really good nic but ask me any questions if you like and I'll try to help.
The TD5 Hardtop has a pretty major problem (undriveable) that we still had not gotten to the bottom of when they shut us down. It had sucked quite a bit of time and money - purchased privately from a guy in Sydney. Seriously, I'd steer clear of it!
Have fun shopping guys, there are some great vehicles in there that we loved dearly :'(
Oh one last thing - Grays also left behind all the original service records :-\ we are trying to get them to see the importance of them but if they don't take them I will be able to help you out there as well. The administrator had put them in the rubbish pile!!! >:(
-
Good to see someone treat any of these magic vehicles with respect. Well done.

Thanks Greg, we loved them and it broke our hearts to see the Administrators take them all away after the efforts of everyone involved and Tom's vision... Alas life goes on and we're slowly gathering ourselves up from the ruins :-\

is there a link?

2 questions for El:
Is the AWOL signage removable vinyl stickers or paint?, and,
Is there a way that any buyers of these vehicles could contact "somebody" from AWOL to be reunited with the service log books of the vehicle they purchase? I suspect that AWOL might be better custodians of those documents now rather than the administrators or Grays BNE.

Hi Gunner,
The AWOL signage are vinyl stickers yes. Tom and I removed them off his personally owned vehicle on the weekend and they came off easily. I just used my fingernails, Tom used a blade. I was quicker ;) and managed to get each letter off in one piece. It just takes a little time and patience. We wiped off the odd spot of residue with a spray alcohol I think it was, it came off easily. All of the vehicles in the fleet have had touch up paint work done and look really nice. We regularly applied lanolin to them and this brings them up a treat. This will be the final step on the one we de-stickered and I am certain there will be no remaining sign of AWOL on her body (except for the one star we kept on ;) ).
There is only Tom and myself (Tom's partner) remaining of what was AWOL :'( (emotional girly stuff haha). Of course we want Gray's to get the best price possible for the vehicles for the creditors so we are hounding them and the Administrators to re-install the GS Windows (grrr it's so easy, such a quick job) and take the records to match them to the vehicles as these will be appealing to buyers. Yes I have them all in safe storage after retrieving them from the rubbish pile >:( and if they do not take them I will be happy to post them to buyers at their expense. Once the auction starts, if they have not taken them, I will list all the ones I have on this thread - from a glance about 3/4 of the fleet. Any that I have remaining 6 months after the sale I will forward on to REMLR :D
-
Thank you for taking the initiative with the records El - what you are proposing to do sounds right. :)

Spray alcohol ?? Is there a shop I can get home supplies of some of that. Hic.
-
G 'day El (and Tom).
Glad to hear that the gm120 log books were rescued.
Such a great shame that our hard work came so close to fruition.
Could you check if Tom rescued my black bag from the office before the locks went on?

I thought only 3 SRV had been sold so far? And compliance in QLD could be painful with the wheels as a door. Not sure how practical the one with no winsdscreen would be, hope it does not end up as a bush basher.

Does that apply for QLD and other states? One of yours did not have a screen, was it on the road?

We registered all the AWOL vehicles in NSW. We had no problem registering the SRV once we added a windscreen to it. The one without a windscreen we never drove. We were so busy with AWOL we hadn't got around to modifying it. So that one we had not registered yet. I have no doubt that with the addition of a windscreen it would be fine. I don't know about Qld

The SRV used to have a stretcher in it ?

No mate, why do you ask?

No mate, why do you ask?
Sorry Dave, I should have put a bit more context in the question.
The photo I attached was a photo from ARN203004 at auction in June last year. It looks like it had gained about 3,000km (which isn't bad for a years driving) and lost the stretchers/aliminium floor out of the back ?
What my question was, does AWOL still have them? I also send a PM to "El" but couldn't attach a photo.
http://www.graysonline.com/lot/0012-5014453/transport-trucks-and-trailers/land-rover-110-4x4-surveillance-reconnaissance-soft-top-11-1990
-
Ah, now I see.
Can't say if they still have them. Don't recall if they were in one of the piles auctioned a couple of weeks ago with the other removed accessories. Sorry.
They are not stretchers though, just removable false floor panels.
-
You'd expect that if a vehicle was missing a fuel tank, that they would list that in the disciption. Wouldn't you?!?
-
For all those who have supported or wished me well, I am extremely glad to announce that a VERY, VERY good mate is going to purchase Lot 27/ ARN 51670 to secure it for me until I have the funds together to buy.
I am stunned by this generosity (i'll make it worth his while)
R: you are a legend!
So for both our sakes, please bid on something else just this once. There are plenty to choose from. If you know someone bidding, please give them a heads up.
Best regards, Dave B.

So you are the happy chap getting the SRV? Was it $18800 plus the 17%. Will look better with a new canvas, there more complexed than the others, Robco sell them for $2500.
You might have to get some plates made up for the floor, as they are NLA. But someone on here might know of a set knocking around, you will need the frame as well for the plate ( its separate to the base plate. )
-
Lot 30
ARN 51789
Had a crack at lot 22 SRV well done on the purchase
-
Boxy, but is it still in your shed?
Yes, typo in the rush. 680.
I am wrapped to say that due to the amazing kindness of an AULROan, My old Mate (Mad Mick) is now safe!
The RFSV will spend some time in storage until I can come up with the dollars then we are back on the track again.
You sir, are a Legend and a quiet one at that.
Thanks again for the support and understanding.
-
Yes should be good. Hopefully can find the floor.

Hi guys,
I have had a few messages so thought I would add it here to clarify.
All of the original log books were given to Grays. I have heard that they were "misplaced" for a while but have now showed up again >:( Apparently they are willing to post them out to purchasers of the corresponding vehicles so get in touch with Grays if you picked up an AWOL vehicle and want the service log book.
PS, not every vehicle had one but the good majority did.
Cheers
El
-
Thanks for your efforts El.
Pleased to say that I eventually got the GM120 for 51 680.

Evening all,
I was out at Grays , Brisbane, today, they still have at least a dozen GM120's in a box in "steve's" office.
