Title: Reproduction Series 2 A Placards
Post by: mike_k on October 30, 2015, 01:48:32 PM
Hi everyone,

After a lot of work, we are finally able to reproduce pretty much all of the 2 A aluminium photo etched placards.

The originals on most peoples vehicles are starting to show the signs of 60 years or so of hard life, or are missing entirely!

This includes,

Nomenclature plates, Service Data plates, Fuse box, Winch PTO, Tyre life, vehicle repair/ into service plates, engine Tappet clearance, and the big Front Wheel Drive one above the instrument panel.

As per this photo:

(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk135/pinegrove_photo/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpg1_6.jpg) (http://s279.photobucket.com/user/pinegrove_photo/media/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpg1_6.jpg.html)

These are the originals, the repro ones will of course be new!

As far as the Nomenclature and Servicing Data plates go, could anyone who is interested in these please let me know their vehicle type, and if possible provide a photo of the old plates (if you have them).

So far we are producing these for the 88 1/4 ton GS and the 109 3/4 ton GS, but we can make them for any vehicle variant so long as we know what the original plate looks like.

For the Chassis number and dates for the Nomenclature and repair plates, I will look into getting hold of a set of punches, and would be happy to stamp them up with the correct info if required.

We are also reproducing the Recommended Lubricants adhesive label that was fixed to the gearbox tunnel on the early 2 and 2A vehicles.

(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk135/pinegrove_photo/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpg2_5.jpg) (http://s279.photobucket.com/user/pinegrove_photo/media/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpg2_5.jpg.html)

This label also appeared on the civilian vehicles of the same period, perhaps installed by PMC?

Don't worry Rod, we are finally also making the RADIO placard for the FFTs.

We are still finalising the prices, more info soon on that.

If we could have expressions of interest and any photos of required Nomenclature / Service data plates, either to this thread or email to milspeclabels@gmail.com

I will update this soon with some prices,

Cheers,

Mike.

I'm expressing interest.

What are minimum numbers? I wouldn't mind a few of these:

I'll send you a pm.

Thanks Howard, I know you were chasing some of these.

I'll update this soon with some prices.

Okay.

I've just been talking to the printer, and I have worked out some prices.

Once again, I started this project mainly due to the fact that I need some of these, and it just grew from there. I have been asked for a few of these by a few people, so hopefully these will come in useful for everyone else s restorations.

These placards will be photo etched aluminium, in the correct colours and to the same dimensions as the originals including the correctly placed holes for the fasteners.

There may be a minor variance in the thickness of the alloy plate, but apart from that they should be the same as the ones that came with the vehicles.

We are using the same professional printer that produced the first lot of switch labels, so the quality will be the same as the originals from the 60s.

The Nomenclature and Service data plates are very specific for the type of vehicle.

If you want any of these, let me know the census number and vehicle type, and if you can, send me a photo of the one that you need, and we should be able to make them up.

So, here is a list of what we will be able to make.

1. Nomenclature plates $25.00

(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk135/pinegrove_photo/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpg4_1.jpg) (http://s279.photobucket.com/user/pinegrove_photo/media/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpg4_1.jpg.html)

2. Servicing Data plates $ 25.00

(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk135/pinegrove_photo/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpg1_3.jpg) (http://s279.photobucket.com/user/pinegrove_photo/media/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpg1_3.jpg.html)

3.  Front Wheel Drive placard $25.00

(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk135/pinegrove_photo/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpg1_7.jpg) (http://s279.photobucket.com/user/pinegrove_photo/media/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpg1_7.jpg.html)

To be continued,

No worries Pete,

I've just spoken to the Art department (my Daughter), and that should be fine.

I have a missing one as well, on someones wall somewhere I guess.

Land -Rover 88" Series IIA. No worries.

Incidentally, I will try and get hold of a set of 5/32 Number and letter stamps, so the vehicle details can be stamped on if required.

Hi everyone,

If anyone else is after any of these placards, please let me know.

At this stage, I'm waiting to get the proofs back from the printers, so I'm happy to keep the orders open at this stage.

It looks like we will be able to reproduce the Bamford winch ID plate as well, due to popular demand!

Thanks to everyone who has already ordered,

Cheers,

Mike..

A quick update on the placards,

We have been going back and forth with the printers, correcting the proofs of all of the placards to ensure that they are exactly right.

The final proofs should be ready this week, and we will get them printed off when the printers get back from their Christmas break in mid January.

So, the light is there at the end of the tunnel, we are almost there!

Thanks everyone for your patience, with the sheer number of placards we are re-making, this has been a fairly major project.

Hopefully the next time I update this it will be early in 2016, and they will be ready to send out. :D

Got a parcel in today's post.

Finally. ;D

Well worth it though, we are very happy with them.

Here are some of the general ones,

(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk135/pinegrove_photo/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpeg) (http://s279.photobucket.com/user/pinegrove_photo/media/Milspec%20Labels/image.jpeg.html)

Nomenclature plates,

(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk135/pinegrove_photo/Milspec%20Labels/image_1.jpeg) (http://s279.photobucket.com/user/pinegrove_photo/media/Milspec%20Labels/image_1.jpeg.html)

And the Servicing Data plates,

(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk135/pinegrove_photo/Milspec%20Labels/image_4.jpeg) (http://s279.photobucket.com/user/pinegrove_photo/media/Milspec%20Labels/image_4.jpeg.html)

I'm so used to seeing the old faded damaged ones, that these ones look a bit strange!

I will send everyone who has ordered some of these a pm with the bank account details etc, and get them sent out.

I will also be able to bring them up to Corowa if that suits anyone.

I realise that this has taken a long time, but we were very particular about getting these as correct as possible. We had a lot of corrections etc. to sort out until we were finally happy with the proofs from the printer.

Due to the fact that these were made by draughtsmen drawing them up in the 60s, no two placards are ever the same. The servicing data plates are a good example, they seemed to change slightly with each contract!

I do have some spares, if anyone else is after any, please let me know.

Mike.

Daryl,

A good photo will do, and the exact dimensions.
Most of the ones we made up were measured up from an original.
The hole spacing is critical, so that it fits!

And a credit must go to you for the artwork of the winch plate as well, a very professional job.

Sorry everyone, I missed a couple of posts there while I was away with work.

Carzee, I'm really glad it didn't get bent, a bit of a worry that.
It took ages to get them as close as we could, lots of proofs back and forth with the printer.

If I can get a good one to copy, we will definitely make up some No5 trailer plates.

John, I have not made any switch labels, ( wiper, side head etc.) but I have got some from eBay UK in the past.
Have a look under Land Rover series switch or something like that and they should come up - the ones I bought were thin aluminium with very finely cut letters. They don't look too bad, compared to the old worn out plastic ones.

I do have spares of all of the placards at the start of this post, so I will send you another pm John with the right info!

I plan to bring the spare ones up to Corowa, if anyone else wants any, let me know.

No worries John,

Your placards are in today's post.

The repro switch labels are not too bad, I didn't really think of trying to reproduce these as they were originally plastic with fairly coarse lettering.
The photo etch process works really well with the placards, but I have my doubts about getting the plastic switch labels exactly right.

There were a couple of sellers of these on eBay UK, but now there only seems to be one.

Shame you cant gewt the genuine ones any more. :'(

Post by: mike_k on February 22, 2016, 08:36:28 PM
Glad they got there in one piece Howard.

Thanks very much, I will pass your feedback on to the art department!

The Recommended oil placard was usually on the transmission tunnel, drivers side, aft of and in line with the yellow selector plate that bolts to the transmission tunnel.

Sort of next to your left boot when you are in the drivers seat.

That sounds as clear as mud. ::)

Here's a photo of a 1963 SWB.

Hopefully clearer!

Gee I need to get onto restoring that, it looks terrible....

Thanks Hallsy,

Glad you are happy with them.

Welcome home from Hospital, must be good to be out of there.

Not long until you are back driving the Rovers again!

Stephen,

Yes, that is the plan.

I will hopefully get a good sample at Corowa and make some up after that.

It looks like there is a demand for the MOD record plate as well.

No worries Pete,
Glad you like them.
I like your idea of adding a new repair plate to finish off your restoration.
Great to meet you too, I'm looking forward to seeing your 88 up and running soon!

Are you intending to do the switch labels, e.g., side/head?
