I would say the rear canvas is a bit of a hand full, and if you are intending using your land rover more so than less so, i better alternative can be found.

I had Alan make me up a rear canvas that looks like the original one from the outside but without  all the silly bits.....and its fantastic

The canvas tent sections/extensions/poles/ropes/pegs needed to do this task would require you to tow a trailer to stow it all in. You would also need the help of several people to extend the metal hoops upwards as with the canvas body on it, I wouldn't know what weight it is, but it is heavy.
I have all the bits canvas metal/wooden pole sect etc etc for my 109 Wksp, the vehicle was restored about 6 years ago and I have never had any of it assembled, it is just too much work for one person to do on a daily basis, just my humble opinion, cheers Dennis
Ps and if it rains you have to have the area to hang it all out to dry,,.

Advice to date concerning the canvas back is that it's complicated to erect. Is that the case or just a familiarisation thing?

The Canvas is not designed to put up and down every day, not so much complicated as it is straight forward but very time consuming, I allow 2 hours to fully erect the tent on my workshop and/or workshop trailer (same tent) and it's a two person job to lift the legs of the frame up into position as it needs to be lifted about 18" .

So lift up frame, extend frame out the back, roll canvas out the back, untuck inverted canvas on sides, put up heavy wooden posts and guy ropes x 4, put spacer/tensioner bars in place, put draft skirt around tray, put 7 wall panels on and latch lace together.........

I've done the simpson in a modern 4WD and slept in swags it's the best way to do it, less than 2 minutes and set up.

I'd still buy the workshop as they are fantastic vehicles and would be great going through the Simpson or anywhere....

Juddy's idea is good but you can't raise the frame, you could sleep in the back OK (tray is two short for me and I'd get cold feet) or for storage

Hope this helps
Scott

Yup cant raise the frame, but i would never have the need to do so.  And the canvas is the same length, regardless if you lift the frame????? so what difference would that make?

Or have I missed something?

Mines got straps so we can now roll the sides up, with ease...

Juddy,  I like yours for practicality as a canopy cover, the Workshops set up as a tent do raise up so you get head room and allows for drop in side flaps, tall blokes like me just/don't quite fit under without lifting, but more for avoiding heat coming off canvas.

The photo shows how much they lift up.

Ah yes thought as much, so as the canvas will be higher you would need to add extra sections to it.....

As I am a dwarf I dont have height issues. :P

Yes compared to Jeeps, there very good value, at least jeep prices have levelled off a bit, and theres a lot of them out there..

And theres more jeeps than workshops..

Yeh Jeeps are like bum holes every man has one!!!! That's why I'll stay with my landy.

Dennis, Give me a ring or a pm and I will show you how to do it all in under 1 hour. Lots of practice in a field workshop, even at night.

Okay, so I get that the tent's a bit of a handful to erect :-[ What about just the insitu canvas on the vehicle? I envisaged it might convert into a small, three sided awning or am I mistaken?

cheers again

G'day Dusty Oval  :)

If you wish to see what a 2/2a 3/4 ton workshop truck looks like unfolded take a look on the REMLR.com site and look for the Series 2a 3/4 ton heading, then scroll down until you get the 3/4ton workshops, they are on the left column below the firetenders  :) the first one listed, above DM's w/shop is of a 66 model taken at the Amelia Earhart Airshow at Kingaroy Qld in the late 1990's there are some good pics of it and the equipt carried.that vehicle is still in deep storage  :)

I know that vehicle "Warthog" as it originally came from Qld and I inspected it before purchase by it's current owner about 10 years ago.

And somwhere between $10-12K would be reasonable  ;)
cheers

Cyro is very deep storage, gets a bit expensive mind you... and it can alter the molecular structure of things over time.
