Title: New project - Inter placards
Post by: mike_k on April 28, 2017, 10:12:02 AM
Following on from our Land Rover placard project, I have been asked by a few people if it is possible to re make the Inter placards?

From what I have seen, these have not survived as well as some of the Land Rover ones, and most of them are in fairly average condition after 50 years or so.

Here are some MK 4 placards as an example.

(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk135/pinegrove_photo/Milspec%20Labels/43a2e751-0b0c-4509-9733-9ce7141e8fef.jpg) (http://s279.photobucket.com/user/pinegrove_photo/media/Milspec%20Labels/43a2e751-0b0c-4509-9733-9ce7141e8fef.jpg.html)

This should be no problem, we have so far produced the artwork for the F 2 Tipper and the MK 4.(All of the placards for both vehicles)

Is there anyone who is interested in a set of these for their truck?

We can do a set for the MK 3, or the F 1 if required, as we will do these in one run (to save stuffing our printer around), let me know now.

As per the Land Rover placards, they will be reproduced as photo etched aluminium placards, exactly as they were drawn up originally.

The cost should come to somewhere between $125 - 150 for a full set for one vehicle. This is subject to confirmation from the printer, I will have a definite figure once we have an indication of interest and have a firm price from them.

Let me know by replying here, or via pm.

Cheers,

Mike.

I don't need them but, if they are available, I might as well grab a set for a Mk3.

What do you have in mind?

The best way is if you are able to send me the original, that way we can copy it perfectly. You will definitely get it back. :)
If it is something simple, a photo should do, with some exact measurements (length, width and hole spacing).

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi Mike.
I'd like a set of any that you plan to get made that will suit my F1.
Below is a pic of the ones I have, all in poor condition.

If you would like any of these to use as templates, let me know and I can post them to you.

Something to make note of is the difference with the fuel tap plate and the one over the switch panel is that the F1/F2 have Front & Rear tanks, whereas the MK3/4 have Left and Right.

Another thing is that the F1 & F2 have a different gear shift pattern to the MK3 & 4, unless they have had a gearbox switch. I see that your placard for the gear change pattern shows the layout for the non-syncro boxes on the F1/F2.

I also have the plates specific to the F1's with the Abbey cranes if you would like them to copy. Admittedly, not many people would have a use for them, as I think only myself and STDIVER have one, but if you ever think of doing a run, I'd love a set.

As you can see, the plates are pretty big, and mine are almost illegible in the photo.
Saying that though, after some careful cleaning, I was able to clearly make out the detail on the long plate and I photoshopped the detail on the pic below.

Oh, while taking off these plates, I made a really interesting discovery about my truck, but I'll post about that in my thread later. House inspection on Tuesday, so I have lots of cleaning up and moving of truck parts to do.

Greg.

G'Day Greg,

We will add yours to the list.

While we are running the print job, we might as well do your crane ones as well.

I did actually mix the placards up in my photo, it does show the F 2 one by accident.

I will send you a pm, if you could send some of them up that would be very helpful.

I am also after some good photos of the MK 3 placards if anyone can help?

Cheers,

Mike.

Mike,

Photos of M3 placards attached, these are out of the user manual, actuals have black background with white lettering with the exception of the winch and gearbox placards which have the WARNING in red, the photo of the ID placard is interesting "TRUCK,CARGO, 2- ton, GS",  I think the actual plate is 2 1/2 ton would be good for someone to check. I have a spare MK3 winch and gearbox placard you can have if needed to copy.

Hi Mike

I think you'll find the Mk3 one is the same as the Mk4 one with the Mk changed.

I'd be interested in a pair of the centre of gravity ones.

Given that I have an Isuzu box, would you be able to do a gearbox instruction plate with the Reverse and 1st swapped?

Have attached an old image of my Mk3 ID plate

Diana,

No problem with the CG plates, I'll add you to the list.

Is the Isuzu gearbox conversion very common? I will send you a PM regarding this.

From what I have seen, the MK 3 placards have the WARNING script in red text on the WINCH and GEARBOX placards while the MK 4 do not. (I think).

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi Mick

No I don't think its common, my truck was converted to Isuzu 6BB1 by the NSW RFS and they basically took the Isuzu engine and its mated Isuzu gearbox and plonked it in place of the IH engine and Turner box.  That way there's no adapter plate problems, just a replacement jack-shaft and move the Isuzu shift to the Inter.

If you go ahead with Mk3 ID plate put me down for one of those too.

Diana

I think I'm fairly happy with the Isuzu, on a recent trip fully loaded with a fully loaded Haulmark PT1-1.2 trailer in tow from Glenorie, up Bellbird Hill Kurmond via Bell Line of Road to Lithgow and return the truck returned 11.24MPG (25.11L/100Km).  How does that compare with the 282 petrol?

Should be do-able I think Diana,

Can you find out the dimensions?

Does your vehicle have the rivet holes, and if so, what is the distance (horizontally and vertically) between the holes?

How many were you after?

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi Mike

I haven't found any holes but believe it should have been in the rear body area where extensive modifications occurred with the camper conversion.  The other IDs were on the body, but louvers were installed just below one et of holes to vent the fridge.

I do however know that on some variants the plate was affixed to the protruding part at the top of the Land Rover firewall on the engine side (same location as the compliance plate on perenties) which means that the height would have to be around 70mm to 75mm.

Assuming that and the dimensions on screen (120mm x 86mm) I would scale the image to 75mm H x 100mm W.

Only need one, I believe I have the only SADF F/C Land Rover in Australia.

Okay, so 100 x 75 mm. That is very close to 4 x 3 inches, would it have been imperial or metric do you think?

Is there anyone in South Africa who could verify this?

And, do you need repros of the orher two in your second photo?

Cheers,

Mike.

I seem to recall the "Vehicle Operating Instructions" specifying 6mpg on road and 2 mpg off-road for the petrol engine,

Hi Chazza.

As I said, pretty happy, and for anyone who knows the hills (mountains) at each end of "Bell Line of Road" and the one at Mt Tomah all of which were 2nd gear, even better.

Mike

I've tried to get the dimensions of the plate before without luck.  Measuring the location on the firewall, I would tend to be between 70mm and 75mm rather than greater than 75mm (e.g. 3" = 76.2mm) as I think it would be difficult to insert the top rivets.

The abbey crane ones should come up well.

Has anyone got a photo of an F1 overhead switch panel? The one we are using as a template is a bit worn at the right hand end, I think it should say START over ON for the start button, but as I said, Ravvin's is totally worn away.

Mike.

Looks good.
That end on mine was mangled, with no writing at all.
When I picked it up at the wharf in Devonport, they told me the battery was dead flat as noting happened when they pressed the starter.
Turns out they hadn't flicked the ignition switch on. Started first touch of the button.

Good morning everyone,

I finally have some news on the Inter placard project.

My apologies that this has taken a bit longer than planned, thanks for your patience!

All of the artwork is now with the printer, they will get back to me with a quote soon.

This has actually been bigger than the Land Rover placard project, but we should be able to supply full placard sets for ,

MK 3, MK 4, F1 GS, F1 Dump, and the HIAB crane on the F1 GS.

All of these different vehicles have different placards, (naturally!) but we are fairly confident that the repros will be as close to the originals as possible.

Once again thanks to everyone for your patience, I will update this when the quote comes in.

I have noted everyone who is interested in this thread, if anyone else is after a set for their vehicle, please let me know.

Cheers,

Mike.

Good morning everyone,

The quote is in, and it works out to be $180.00 for a set of placards for each Truck, plus registered post.

I will have full placard sets for the MK 3, MK 4, F1 GS and if required, the F2 Dump truck. (I have only 1 order for the F2 at the moment)

And a separate set of the large placards for the Hiab crane at $145.00 (3 of these in this set, SWL diagram, Crane stowing/unfolding and the control placard.)

These sets will comprise all of the original placards, photo etched onto aluminium as per the originals.

Each set will have,

Nomenclature, Winch, Gearbox and Servicing data plates, as well as the upper and lower switch panel labels, and the Winch Clutch, Fuel Tanks, Panel Lights, Map Light, Normal / Blackout (F1/2 only) and the CG one for the tray.

All of them have been very carefully checked and will be an exact copy of the originals.

At this stage, they should be printed up in 2 weeks or so, but definitely before Corowa.

As soon as they are printed, I will post up some photos.

Thanks very much to Raavin and David for an extended (!) loan of your original placards!

If anyone is aware of anyone else who would be interested in a set of these for their truck, please let me know asap.

Cheers,

Mike.

A quick update.

Last week the printers ran off some of the F1 GS and F1 dump truck placards as a rush job for Corowa.

This worked out really well and I was able to deliver some of these to dkg001 and they went straight onto his truck! Great to see these finally done, especially as this truck is where the project started.

This week they plan to complete the job including all of the Mk3 and Mk4 placards as well as the generic ones that are common for all of the trucks. And the crane ones (!)

When I get them all delivered, I will send everyone a pm and we will arrange delivery / payment.

Getting very close now, thanks again everyone for your patience.

Cheers,

Mike.

I do realise that this project has been a long time coming, but it is terrific to see them all done.

I have checked out the postage cost, and they will be sent out via registered mail once your payment comes in.

I did say that they would cost 180.00 per set, I have to confess that I forgot about GST, so they will actually cost $198.00 for the 11 placard set

Postage / packaging will be $10.00, so each set comes in at $208.00.

Tonight I will send out pm's to everyone who expressed an interest with our bank account details, and they will be sent out once payment arrives.

Currently I have the following people on the list,

MK 3     Mick Marsh
            Acco 4x4
            Diana

MK 4     FFR Man
            Dkg001

F1 GS   Raavin
            Bundy (I hadn't forgotten Drew)
            STDDIVER
            Dodgeguy42
            JohnP

A quick update,

Thanks very much to everyone who has sent their payment through.

Tomorrow I will post out the first sets, I will send you a pm with the tracking number once they are in the mail.

It turns out that the crane ones are too big for the envelopes I bought, ::) so I will sort that out tomorrow as well.

Cheers,

Mike.

Very much looking forward to seeing them on the vehicle.

Well thanks to everyone who purchased a set or 2 (!) of placards, it has been very satisfying to help out with everyone's restorations.

I very much appreciate the kind loan of the originals as well from a couple of members.

I do have a few remaining sets left, specifically,

1 x MK 3 set

1 x MK 4 set and,

5 F1 GS sets.

If there is anyone else interested, please let me know ASAP, as I plan to advertise them on facebook shortly.

I would like to let anyone from REMLR have a crack first, as this is where the project started.

Cheers,

Mike.

No worries John,

Happy that you are happy with them, that's why we ran the project!

Looks like there are now only 3 F1 GS sets remaining, but I have been asked to run some off for the Holmes recovery gear on the F5 wrecker, which will be interesting.

This means that if anyone has missed out, we can print some more sets off if required?

Cheers,

Mike.

Here's an Interesting placard from a 1973 F1. Notice the Transfer Case shift positions?

It's the Yarragundry auction truck: http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php?p=260999&posted=1#post260999

No "Low ratio six wheel drive" on the plate.

Very observant of you. That is some typo. I wonder how many came like that. The ones that I drove were correct.

Interesting that the truck is very late production, the placard has Warning in red and pull trigger instead of lift trigger, most Mk 3 placards had the Warning in red and I do have a Mk 3 placard which reads pull trigger.

I remember driving an F2, which had the omission on the label in the 1980's,

Once you are taught how to do something I guess that you don't look at placards anyway. I delivered concrete between trade jobs for a while and once I learnt the shift pattern for the various Roadrangers I didn't look at said placard. Mind you Roadrangers had some interesting patterns depending on the number of speeds.

Very interesting, it looks like the factory made a mistake here with this one.

A bit of a mixture of the F1 and the Mk 3 apparently, possibly a Friday afternoon job? :D

As DKG said, this is a late production truck, (1973), all of the earlier Trucks had this placard which we reproduced.

Does the Winch placard have a red WARNING label as well?

Cheers,

Mike.

Another interesting change that occurred along the way was the need to lift the trigger in Mk3s and Mk4s to engage low 4. It seems that a lot of F1 spec transfer cases were fitted to the 4 X 4 trucks in later life, but the placard was never changed when this was done. Another change to the placards in Mk3s was the light switch arrangement. In production the light switch was centre off and this led to a lot of flat batteries, because drivers tended to flick all the switches up when parking the truck at the end of the day. The tail light circuit also had its own switch, so it was possible to have the park lamps on and the tail lights off!!! When the light mod was done the placards were not changed but were defaced or overwritten.Trucks that were rebuilt had new placards fitted as a rule. The park - tail lamp switching was actually common until the 60s, cars like early Holdens had the tail light switch at the rear of the car.

G’day everyone,

Just a quick update to this post, I recently was asked to reproduce a set of XF 1 Dump Truck placards for the hoist controls in the cab.

We also ran off some Battery Box Warning, and those circular Trailer Flasher ones as fitted to the F1s and maybe the Mk4?

I do have a couple of spare sets of these available, as per the photo.

I can sell the Trailer Flasher and Battery box ones separately if necessary.

The cost for the dump truck set is $110, including registered post.

I also have a few sets available for the Mk3 and the F1 GS at the moment.

Let me know if you are interested,

Cheers,

Mike
