Thanks for all the warm welcomes.

I have just moved back to Western Sydney after 5.5 years NE of Broken Hill.  My new national park i manage is on Campbelltown road only 10 mins from my new RSFV.  cant wait for monday.

Who do you use for a green slip?  Comprehensive insurance?

Just down the road from you at Minto ..

I went with Shannons after trying my normal car insurers, they know what a  Perentie is and I elected for occasional use and got a great deal.

Really happy I found this thread - I used this last auction as a bit of research for a future buy (as an ex 51 member I want an rfsv) I have a bunch of photos of the various rfsv in action for back in the 90's and I will try to match them up to some of the ones purchased here.

Alright, that'll add to the numbers - look for Landys under cam nets trying not to stand out from the other 500 Landys.

Yeah, as I wrote that I'm thinking the nets were designed to make you less visible but we use them to make us more visible. :)

If you can't see us give us a post on line here and we'll pop purple smoke or something.

Mine drives really well. The tyres are super noisy. It has most of its CES including the air hose
It had 1 full tank and the other was 3/4s full

Drive it from minto to MacArthur square got the green slip and comprehensive insurance. Then to Campbeltown RTA got some plates went to bunnings and bought some cable ties to hold the number plates on as I didn't think I could get it until Monday. Very excited can't wait to
Drive it again on Sunday.

I have found photos of 51 686 and 51 65? (sorry - last digit is obscured by winch cable - I think it will be 51 655, but this is based on little more than the bit of what looks like a 5 ha ha).   They are both bogged up to the gunnels (as we all were) in black soil country east of Mt Isa.

For those who pick up an ex-cairns RSFV - these have seen a lot of salt water

The shot outside the houses comes with a little story. I was getting back from a OP with the AFP and when I got to my house there was a bunch of cops and TV cameras outside. I freaked and thought something had happened to my girlfriend, but it was just some nut bag over the back fence with a shooter holding his dog hostage (the heat in Cairns does strange things to folk).  Anyway, what I didn't see was the TV camera  zoom in on me dumping a heap of crap in the house while carrying my steyr.... got grilled by the boss the next day.

Photo as taken on the highway was simply because this was the first bend we had seen in three hours of driving...

Thanks Rod - All fixed while you were typing.

I have to find a shot of my old FFR. I was Light EW troop Commander for two years, which means I think we had the only Offensive Weapon FFR  :D

I could be wrong - but that might actually be the one in the house shot. I have a head for numbers (I can still remember my rifle numbers all the way back to 1989 - yes slightly 'rainman-esk')

The other reason I say this though is that I can remember it was always a pain the arse having two that were so close a blind bugger like me would forever be jumping in the wrong truck (a five looks like a eight when you can't see fifteen feet in front of you).

Unfortunately a lot of my photos are buried in boxes, but I still have good contact with two other mates who were at Norforce and Pilbara Regt respectively so I will see what else I can dig up.

Just checked the ARN list and 51-686 was picked up in QLD in Oct 2013 - so if you are out there - check under the wheel arch for black soil

Do you recall the ARN for that one? Might be wishful thinking, but my FFR was Mt Isa based, and appeared to be a bit of a pet.

That one (the EW FFR) was actually Cabarlah based, but the FFR you have was in Mt Isa because of me. I was the first ARA RSO at 51, but just before I got there we did an activity with 7 Sig Regt out that way. I chatted with the CO at the time (the scary-as-hell Tinkos) and convinced him that having FFR out at Mt Isa and a few other mainland locations.  I drove yours a fair bit when we ran a patrol commanders course in March of 93.  You have a new gear stick after I sheared it off coming down what I would describe as a cliff and getting it all wrong in the gravel (panicked and grabbed the bugger so hard I snapped it off). Yours should be In great condition as it would have seen much less off road time as Sig Platoon would drive it to a decent paddock and set up our HF antennas. it wasn't used regularly for real hard going.

Thanks for recounting your experiences Gavin, a car's backstory makes it all the more interesting.
It is still in great condition, the gearbox is a bit of a bitch at times but otherwise she's great, a pleasure to drive.
A new gear stick 20 odd years ago! Probably due for another break haha.
Cheers,
 Mark
