ARN Polaris
« on: May 24, 2020, 04:25:44 PM »
Back in 2014 I purchased a 6 wheel drive Polaris from West Australia in a greys auction. It was painted in a sand colour and is very similar to the one pictured on the REMLR web site alongside the LRPV 6x6.
It has a ARN number. Can I find out a bit about its history from the ARN? If so how do I go about it?
Tom

Hi Tom. I think it safe to assume the Polaris was with the SF in MEAO.

The vehicle records would be digital and secure (somewhere).
I have looked around the web and the AWM collection listed. http://www.awm.gov.au/findingaids/Guide-to-the-Afghanistan-Collection-2001-present

Nadda.

That just leaves the photo collection and there are only a handful of public SASR photos for the period (so far).

Yes I have tried the AWM as well. I think you are probably right. Its paintwork is in those desert colors matching the SFLRPV types and it had enough sand under it to start my own beach.  I guess I will poke around a bit further until the military tell me to bugger off.
Thanks for the reply anyway. I was getting the feel that Polaris was an alien beast.

Great Pics
Mine is a ringer with them. As expected the AWM could not help and I am currently awaiting a response from the Army museum in Bandanna. Still hopeful.
Thanks for your efforts

I suspect those little platform atv units were used often, more ofyen than we assume.

Have to be better for chook work at night. Lower noise, lower fuel usr and heat sig and I wonder if the lighter weight would be less likely to set off ied. Yes, way less payload... but a light patrol or reconn should be smallest possible —its not a 10 day endurance exercise. During daylight hours they have to be much easier to hide...

just an update for anyone who might be interested.
I followed up with the AWM who referred me to the museum at Bandiana who expressed a view that the polaris was likely to have belonged to SAS in WA. They referred me to the SAS Historical Society (who ever they are). I suspect they will politely tell me to bugger off but we will see.

Tom,
Do you have the contact details for the SAS Historical Society ?
I have a GS Perentie that says in its logbook it was in the SAS before being sold,
So i'd be interested to make contact with them to see if they can shed any light on my Perenties history.

Hi Boys,

The SAS Historical Society is the fancy name for the SASR unit museum ; I think not calling it a museum means it can restrict access ; dont quote me on that ???

I`ll see if I can chase up a contact number but I dont think they`ll have much to give you Eric.

Cheers,

Mick

Finally got a reply from the SAS Historical society. They confirm that the Polaris belonged to SAS but would not commit further on its operational life.
About what I expected. At least I know where it was attached.
